Finished up the frame/press portion of the project this morning. I still have to confirm some dims and get my sketches to my machinist buddy to make all the brake parts. I will be on the road a lot this month, so I'm thinking it will all come together late in January.

There are certainly some things learned along the way. I'm not sure I would do the 4 pin design again. My bed sits on pins and pins go through. I might have just made the bed out of rectangle tube and sat it on pins. It would have been much easier.

Cut my pins and installed some D rings.Might switch the d rings out for nicer ones. Ace let me down as far as selection.

Paint and such. Ace rust stop satin black is my coating of choice.

And some finished pics.

This might be considered cheating...I did not build this. But I did get power to it tonight. Scored a pile of tooling to boot. Fired the machine up, calibrated the Back Gauge and the Ram. Typed in a little program and everything works.

Our company was going to trade it in a few years back. I had the guys stick it in the backroom knowing someday I would like to have it in my home shop.

Gotta fix a few issues with the Bottom Die Holders...my Tool and Die maker "barrowed" the tangs. And I need to replace the monitor. It has seen better days.

Hopefully 4 FN sees this...... I acquired a 1" gooseneck punch drop, it is 85 degrees. Should I mill my die opening to 85 or 90. This is on the 1.5 inch open side of my 2 sided die. I assume 90 would be a lot easier for my machinist. I also got a 1/2 inch 90 degree gooseneck for the 3/4 open side of my die so I think that is self explanatory for me.

Nice work, press and press break are on my to do list, your making me feel like i should have built one instead of the englishwheel I have started... Approximately what is the height of it?

Nice score!!! You should spring that mother.

Just machine it at 90°. Give it a try air bending to 90° and if it will not stay at 90° because of spring back then coin it out. Sometimes a restrike (second hit)will help to.

Now if you still can't get a 90° then add a couple of passes of Tape to the top edges of the "V". This will allow it to go over 90°.

I think you will be OK. The majority of our punches are 88° with 90° bottom dies.

Let me know how it works out. Check you angle at both ends of the bend and in the middle. Just curious if you can get the pressure even enough across the Tool or if you will have to shim the bottom die.

Thanks ! I'll try it at 90 first.

Any results???

Far away from that!

Got my punches in UPS this week and made some sketches for the die and other parts for my machinist.

We got 30" of snow yesterday AND I have to fly back out tomm if possible- so I am kind of losing ground.

Dang...send that snow to MN where it belongs...I just drove 177 mile 1 way on Thursday night looking for enough snow to ride on. Saw the news last night and was wishing I was in PA!!! Good luck...just checking in!!!

Went to my buddies tool and die shop to drop off the gooseneck punches I bought for slicing in to smaller fingers. Lights off, driveway not plowed and his wife was in the office. Turns out he went to Daytona to escape the snow. So, I left the dies in his shop and texted him the details. And now we wait......

Another machinist friend of mine is working on the base, punch holder and 2 way V die. He's retired, and been in the house for a whole week, so I would guess he'll be itching to go out in the shop to get away, probably be done pretty soon.

LOL...I am sitting here in Minnesota, 40°+ yesterday. Snow is melting and I have to drive 180 mile north to ride my snowmobile...I look forward to a good ol'blizzard.

Can't wait to see some "bend'in"...

WOW! That is a nice press you fabricated up and what a great score on the Brake! I would love to have a place big enough to put a Brake in like that.
So Sweet!

As much as I am wanting to get this brake attachment for my new press done and posted......there are a few delays.

Machinist # 2's son who is also my racing buddy and best garage pal by a long shot came down with a brain tumor, got it pulled, its benign- but is in recovery and will be for a while. So I have been visiting him in the hospital in between work travel. Not going to ask him to work on parts while he could be visiting at the hospital.

So as of today, the punches and all the other parts are now in the hands of Machinist #1, the toolmaker. And now we wait again. It'll be **** I'm sure, but not fast. I think he starting cutting the punches, by wire EDM so he doesn't have to babysit it.

Sorry to hear the news on the tumor. Thoughts and prayers sent...

Progress...forever forward...but not at the expense of buddy.

Wow, Sorry to hear about your buddy getting the tumor and glad it was benign. I hope and pray he has a speedy recovery. I've been following this press build with anticipation and it has come together nicely! I will be patiently waiting for the brake parts to be completed, so I can copy them!

Had a little time tonight to play with my PB. Grabbed some of the "sprung" tooling and set it up. 2 hits and I had it dialed in. 1/2 degree on the angle and within .004 on the Flange length.

Need to invest in some precision ground tooling.

Any update on your progress??

Most importantly how is your Machinist's son doing?

I don't like presses on wheels, had one flip on me and broke my arm and knee.

My buddy is doing OK. I had him up at the shop for a little bit today, he's been home a week. Thanks for asking. Hopefully he'll be back at work by summer.

The toolmaker that has my brake bits swears he will be getting on them this week. Fingers crossed, but not holding my breath.

However tiny, I do have an update. Got a text from my toolmaker friend, he finished cutting my brake punches in to slices today. I picked them up, cleaned and oiled them. He was working on the rest of my bits, so maybe a few more days on those.

These were sliced with wire EDM. So the fit and finish is pretty darn amazing.

Played with my Brake yesterday. Made some trays for my "small" tubing rack. Today we will build the "big" one.

Well to get technical, you can only stretch, shrink, and cut steel and other metals. Bending is a combination of shrinking on one side and stretching on the other. Any other actions like tearing or burning are destructive but cutting is also tearing to some degree. If you over-stretch metal, it tears obviously.
Sorry to drag up an old topic, in die making, bending and forming are two different processes that can be applied to the same sheet. A bend happens when the metal moves in one axis, a form is when the metal is bent over more than one axis in a single hit.

Of course you're correct on the terms used in tool and die. I'm a tool and die maker as well. I was referring to the through axis of the steel on a micro level whereas you're referring to the larger macro aspects.

Somehow I quoted your post by accident. I meant to quote someone commenting about tubes being bent and sheet being formed. I guess I shouldn't post half asleep anymore lol.

FINALLY !!!!!!!! Longest project ever. I can call this one finished. My toolmaker buddy found it in his heart to finish my brake parts so I can wrap this one up. I did a test bend on some 11 ga, all is well, need to practice later. I wanted to get this together for some upcoming product I am making.

I grabbed the parts, drilled the holding screws, slapped a slice of punch in there, and victory it was.

Nice...now start bending. Measure the flat part and record the measurement. The form it and add up the 2 flanges and subtract the flat dimension and you have you bend deduction. Keep track of this for each material thickness.

Awesome.

Do measure from the outside of flanges?

Sorry I'm a newb to sheet metal work and i'd really like to understand this. Is it possible to get a sketch of what you're describing? I'm building a similar press brake and I'd like to be able to design my project that I intend to use it for properly.
