Kind of a slow day for me, only hit one sale today, got a pair of Channellock pliers, a pair of Peterson vise grips, and a wire wheel for $4. Also yesterday I picked up a matching pair of 2hp Doerr motors (appears to be NOS) from a guy on CL for $50. Going to use one for a compressor project, not sure yet what I'll use the other one for, but you can never have too many motors around.

3baygarage,

Some thieves definitely attend the local sales. Last year I went to pro estate sale with lots of tools in the basement. It was the second day but there was a nice 3/4 drive socket set in the basement complete except the folks said someone walked off with the ratchet. Don't remember the brand but it was USA made.

That evening I am surfing the Craigslist ads for tools and what do I see but that same brand 3/4 drive ratchet listed. Now 3/4 drive ratchets are practically never listed from what I can see so I am pretty sure it was the one stolen from the sale. I had half a mind to fawk with the person listing it but it was gone pretty quickly and at a not so great price. Wonder if the folks saw it on Craigslist.

Also some nice pick-ups this weekend, always like the Vulcan stuff, Those S-K socket sets turn up quite often so there is always next time.

Just saw the Urrea metric stubby set, very nice.

I think the smallest wrench is missing but for $20 I could not pass on them.

That doesn't surprise me. My flea friend was telling me all sorts of flea market theft stories today too. A lot of vendors used to look out for each other there and caught so many people red handed. He could write a book on the topic .

Need to find more estate sales. $16 for this haul, lufkin, brown n sharpe, nicholson usa, etc. There was a cherry craftsman king seeley 100 floor model drill press there at 150, no one seemed interested! I didn't need, and didn't feel like flipping for 50 or soImage1465696968.892756.jpg

Favorite time of year. So many sales going on, you actually stand a chance of finding some worthwhile stuff. The regular tool hawks can't cover them all. Anyway, found a few things I've been looking for for quite some time. First is the Greenerd Arbor Press #2 for $20, and $45 for the rest of the stuff.

Another item on my wishlist - an old but almost new Heatgun, a pair of Grinder shields, old school on/off switches, Craftsman Plane w/manual, Duro inch/lb. torque wrench, new wire wheel, & snap on pliers:

20160611_195557_zpsya9odoqz.jpg

A mix of craftsman =v= and BE series Craftsman, snap-on, bonney, and plomb in a small toolbox, with an "Unbreakable comb" Does any one know what those things are to the left of the comb?

20160611_193838_zpszcatgx3w.jpg

An old craftsman Box to throw everything in thrown in for free,

20160611_195609_zps9zuasbtm.jpg

And finally, a box scraper? And one of my favorites, a pair of 6in. Robogrip pliers, which are some of my favorite pliers.

You **** on those motors !
A few months ago I paid $75 for a 1-1/2hp Dayton and thought I stole it. $25 each is grand theft !

a few days ago a swap meet seller invited me to his home to see a 1950s Snap-on KR-352 bottom and an old Cornwell top piece. it appeared that they had spent their work years together as a pair and i bought them both for $50.00. everything was there with no bumps or bruises.
today i picked up a nice 1965 Snap-on KRA-255 metal "Snap-on" box for a small 1/4" drive set at the same swap meet for $3.00.
i've picked up a lot of Snap-on and some Plomb at the swap meet this week, but these pieces are my favorites of the bunch.

edit 06/12/2016: i failed to mention that a sliding tray was included with and fits the drawers of the Snap-on KR-352 bottom box.

Came across a bucket of old brass window winders. There were a total of 8, but one was missing the screw down plate at one end. Per seller, they came off an old building in Summit Co Ohio, where they were replacing the old windows with new ones.

I haven't cleaned the brass window winder pieces up as yet, as didn't know if they may be needed "as is" to blend in with others. If it were you, would you leave these "as is" or clean them up in order to resell? Pics 1 & 2.

They also had just one spring door closure and handles off a restroom in same building Pic 3. Plus some brass pieces off a lamp/gas light Pic 4.

At another sale, got a bag that contains shot/pellets which looked interesting Pic 5 & 6.

Ran out of daylight to get pics of other items, but will do that later.

Mike

That's it.

Here is my offering for all those in and around Michigan who unlike myself don't have to go to work tomorrow.
Usually these estate auctions have tons of furniture and dishes and one small section of used tools. This one is all tools and lots of them. The pictures alone are pretty amazing. Wish I could go but duty calls.
Hmmmmm. maybe I could tele-commute with phone to work in one hand and a bidder card in the other.:dunno::evil:

A Kennedy BIGHORN LINE 3-drawer machinist’s chest, a Hein-Werner 3A (3-Ton) hydraulic jack, and an empty Black & Decker 1/4-inch drill box.

The decal under the lid in the Kennedy box is not too great, unfortunately.

20160612_090014_zps8rzhhhzc.jpg

There's a "41" embossed on the center clasp. Is that a date code? (I’m not a Kennedy collector.) I would’ve guessed late 40’s or 50’s on this box. School me.

20160612_090235_zpsqqtgqvol.jpg

The drawers only have surface rust, and the felt is easy to replace.

20160612_090055_zpsluuwjqag.jpg

20160612_110648_zpsr93qvkoj.jpg

The jack has a “[GM]” embossed on it, and might be a wartime jack for a GMC or Chevy truck.

The address on the B&D box is pre-Zip Code, so this is older than 1963, at least. Anybody know? (It’s not in a 1954 catalog I have.)

So i went back to the estate sale store with the mac sockets and everything was still there. I got a big lot together and i was going to haggle down the price from $34.50 to $25 or $30 but that didn't go as planned. When i offered them $20 they said no way the price is the price and if you want it lower take stuff out. It was there last day as well so that shocked me they wouldn't haggle. Almost every estate sale will haggle even off the 50% off price on the last day if you are buying a lot. I felt like telling them off and telling them i won't be back but i didn't. But i won't be going to any of the sales anymore there are to many estate sales out there willing to deal and have better stuff and prices then them.

1. propane tank kit $2
2. craftsman 1/4 breaker bar with sockets $2, proto adjustable wrench $2, Sweden mini cutter 50 cents, Buffalo Taiwan 3/4 breaker bar $3.50

3. two mini oil cans $2
4. Mac 19mm-6mm 1/4 socket set missing 14mm and 7mm, Two mac deep metric sockets, two Mac sae sockets, one snap-on metric socket

5. Ingersoll Impact missing connector

My favorite line I've read on here to use in that situation: "You want it more than I do." Sometimes sellers forget your BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) is to walk away.

I really didn't want to walk away after all the time i spent there. I was really thinking about it just on principal. There are lot's of other estate companies to do business with around here. There prices were pretty high on a lot of the tools that is why when i came back the second day i didn't see one tool sold. They were selling some tools on the last day but they will still have a lot of stuff left at the end of the day. I asked her if they do better deals at the end of the day and she said no we don't do any bag sales or deals the last couple hours. After she said that i knew i wasn't coming back there.

Btw guys i am going to probably be taking a few weeks break from going to sales and starting strong again next month. I have a huge problem right now going way over my budget. I don't have to pay a lot of bills right now but i need to start saving my money and not spending it all on tools. How do you guys do it? Do you guys set a limit and once you spend it your done for the week? I try to stay within my budget but i find so many cool tools i want and i can't help myself from getting them at such a good deal. I sometimes spend over $200 a week on tools and sometimes over $100 at just one sale. As you can see i don't try to buy junk anymore and try to stick to the stuff i collect such as usa craftsman, Diamond Duluth, challenger, proto, and usa made ratchets and breaker bars. But if i find something i like and at a good price i pick it up.

Budget ? What is this word ? :wtf:
We don't need no stinkin' budgets !! :lol_hitti

I don't set a weekly budget, but I do try to limit my spending by passing on items that I know I'll see again nearly every week and concentrate on the items that don't appear as often. At this point I have nearly everything that I need and can concentrate on items that I want. An unfortunate side effect is that the want items tend to be higher priced and/or harder to find. Since I only get paid every two weeks, I occasionally need to make hard choices. Two weeks ago - Do I skip meals and buy a hard to find vise ? Or be responsible and not spend out of my food money ? (Bad example, I ate Ramen and refurbished the vise.)

If I was a flipper (getting closer to jumping in the pool), the choices would depend on what I thought my profit margin would be. Even if my goal was to just break even.

Each of us needs to make our own choices based on our own situations.
My advice, try to spend less and put a little away each week into a savings account that you don't touch - ever ! You will need it later. Set up another account for car repairs, etc. I didn't do that when I was your age and now I'm still living paycheck-to-paycheck. It *****, and not in a good way. Don't get me wrong, I'm doing alright for myself. But only marginally. If I had put some thought to it earlier, I'd be much better off.

Buying bulk can be exciting, but I've found that when I do targeting buying, I tend to be much more satisfied with the individual items.
YMMV

Went to a new (to me) flea market. I was about to strike out when I got to the last table on the last row and got this for $5. 12" proto adjustable and 4" Wilton clamp. I'm pleased since I've been looking for an adjustable for my truck box.

Cody, my strategy is to set a budget, bring that amount in cash, and when my pockets are empty I call it a day and grab lunch. I only ever take out more cash when I find an unbelievable once in a lifetime deal (like my big Prentiss vise that I got for $30.) It's worked pretty well for me so far, the last couple weeks I've only spent $20-30 per weekend and walked away happy.

How do you only spend $30 for the whole weekend? I am lucky if I can get out of one sale spending less then $20

I've come to be very selective about what I buy. Rarely spend more than a buck or two for a tool, more for power tools of course. If prices are close to what I'm looking to spend I'll negotiate, but if they're too far off I'll just walk away. At this point I have a massive amount of tools, so I only buy stuff I either don't have, or would be a good upgrade over what I already have.

Sunday sale haul: 3' Pony bar clamp, and an extra 3' pipe for a second one - $5. Works out well since I have another Pony clamp that needs a pipe at home. Metal "old stuff" sign that the wife thought would be perfect for my garage  couldn't leave it behind for just a buck. Craftsman C3 flashlight, thrift store for a buck. Turns out it needs a bulb, might see if I can find an led bulb for it.
