Needs a universal measuring device in one of the photos for perspective on how enormous that thing is. You'd wear yourself out moving the front section up and down.

When I get bored someday I'm going to make a little three inch version of those.

Happy Fathers Day to all. Woke up for work and went to craigslist to find this Yost 32c.
Don't think it was used. $50 asking price. I emailed him and he agreed to hold it until after I was home from work.

Well I can't afford the big Emmert but I picked up another #18 Prentiss.---Came with a cutting hardy for the swivel pin so I had to make a pin for it.---That makes the fifth pin I've made.---Made this one out of a short section of ground rod with the copper vulcanized coating.---Thought it would be a soft steel.---Wrong.---Just laughed at the file.---Ground pretty easy but wouldn't file.

Comparing the two, you can see the differences, but I don't know which is the oldest.---Both are exactly 16.2 lbs.---The swivel pins have different bevel pitch and lengths.

Picked these up yesterday, my first York, a 100, a medium duty Wilton, a Craftsman, and a 3" Heuer, also a first of that brand for me. On the York, there doesn't seem to be anything to center the vise on the swivel base? When the 2 nuts are loosened, the vise floats all around, hanging off the swivel base. I'm sure I can make something, but curious how they came OEM, no signs there ever was anything. Anybody else have any kind of centering pin on their York?

Took the Heuer apart, appears to be really well made. Disassembly was easy till I tried to remove the main screw and handle. Removed the tiny retaining screw, but main screw still didn't want to come out, even with a couple taps with a lead hammer. Then as I was flipping it around, checking to see if there might be another screw, a little ball fell out of the retaining screw hole, and voila, the screw slid right out. Just something to keep in mind if you go to disassemble one of these. The vise is in excellent condition, worst part will be straightening the handle.

Last pic is a widget I got at the same sale as the York, made a thread looking for help in figuring out what it is, no luck, thought I'd throw it out here too. Oh yea, you can just make out a little of the hand vise from the same sale too.

454: love the Heuer vise and hope it cleans up and works ok without any issues. the other vises are all solid vises.

i remember just recently another member posted the same sort of issue with his York's swivel base and he posted it on the 101 thread or maybe he made his own thread showing how he fixed the problem because the hole in the center is not in the middle. If i can remember where those posts are I'll PM you the link or show us how you fixed it.

VA: i don't think i own a 18 yet, but i might.

BEE CAREFUL posting those HELP posts unless you are serious because somebody trying to actually buy a nice vise in your area (THE USA) might cut and paste and email to your bride. GOOD LUCK and we know you love the CHAIN GANG.

ALL: a week without buying a vise. I think I'm cured or maybe my email was shut down.

hope you all had a great Father's Day.

Good finds. Looks like the same Heuer I bought last year, also from your neck of the woods.

Wow, can't believe how quiet this thread, usually if I'm gone for a couple hours it on to another page. Anyway, did a quicky restore on the little Heuer. Straightened the handle, wire wheeled and glass bead blasted it, and then blew on a coat of Arrest Me Red. Checkering on the jaws is mint, and it works smooth as butta. Should be good for another 75 years.

IME, those vises that look like they're missing a swivel base, whether they actually are or not, don't seem to sell that well, with the exception of Wilton bullets. Seems like a lot of those Columbians around, at least around here.

What would someone pay for this, up for sale here and wondering if it's a good price. A columbian 506.uploadfromtaptalk1466471790289.jpguploadfromtaptalk1466471796156.jpguploadfromtaptalk1466471799261.jpg

I have to say i am not a fan of these Columbian vises. These may have had a swivel base at one time but it may have always been used just like that. Issue is they just don't sell well. So if you want a large vise buy it but pay as little as possible. If you want to buy and resell I'd pass.

Many (most?) vises with the Monarch name and lion's head also had PVCo NY marked on them, so it's not a stretch to call them a Prentiss when that's who made them.

Found a couple of PVCo markings while working on this Monarch G-Man. Thanks for pointing that out or I may have missed them. The casting pic is pretty blurry but the stamping on the lead screw shows up nice. Also noticed this B&S stamping inside the jaws. Wonder if that's who made the jaws or maybe who hardened them?:headscrat

That's one beautiful vise! Beautiful restoration!
I got the same kind in original condition. For now I decided to leave it as is.

Patience is the key Joe, Leave it on and forget about it and maybe you should adjust your offers so that it will automatically decline offers under what amount you feel comfortable with. It will sell, obviously not the right person laid eyes on it.

Cool...glad you found those markings. I'm sure someone has the timeline narrowed down, but I think they only used the PVCo margins early on, which means yours has some history to it (well, it does either way, but you know what I mean!).

Charger: those Anvil type old vises are neither a good anvil or a great vise, but they do have the COOL LOOK FACTOR. i've seen more broken than not so if it's not too pricey and you need some garage art i'd pick it up.

since they are over 100 years old and fewer and fewer of them show up without busted off mounting feet or something else broken one day they could be a real collectable so i'd probably pay more than just a little bit for one in good shape.

JOE: since you are complaining about EBay on the thread have you also mentioned the big scores you probably had? my guess it was a member (NO NOT ME) was trying to get you not to SELL YOUR AVATAR. you did a great job spiffing that one up as per usual.

i'd probably double MEATSIS'S offer and pay shipping, but i think I'm cured because i haven't bought a vise for over a week now. :D

Joe - I'm new to eBay selling, but after carefully dealing with a pita buyer who tried to negotiate a fixed shipping price after buying the item I have learned to research available eBay tools before responding. There is a way that you can flag the individual and even block them from purchasing your items or contacting you. Unfortunately, marketing your vises on the world market opens you up to a world of stupid.
