so, i stopped by hd tonight after dropping the youngest at gymnastics. i found a few interesting things:

1) there is a boat load of rolling and top chests there, everything from small, 100$ sets up to their 52 inch top and bottom sets. as an example, they had two unwrapped 41" t/b sets on display, and i counted eight on the top of the racks. they list two in stock online. it was the same on the other things i have looked at, a lot more in stock that they show on the web site.

2) a lot of it has pink stickers on the boxes that say "hold until june 6 for father's day sale" and something about "race track", which i didnt understand.

the sales guy hadn't even noticed the tag, even on the dozen boxes that had been brought down and stuck in the center aisle (is that the race track?). he had no idea what was going on, not that i expected him to.

3) i played with the two 41's for a while. and noticed some subtle differences.

one (call it A) was about an inch shorter than the other (B). A seemed differently constructed on the bottom, it looked like it was sitting on a frame rather than just the flat sheet metal of B. the hole in the top for the locking mechanism for A was narrower and deeper than the one on B. but the big difference was the slides on the drawers. B had slides that clipped on from the bottom, with a single rivet at the end, and the drawers opened and closed normally. A, on the other hand, had slides that were riveted all the way back, and had their new "secure latch" system, where the drawer is a little stiff initially to open, and then slides fine, but when you close it, and get to about an inch from fully closed, it ***** the drawer back from your hand.

they both appear to have the same model and sku number. i kind of assume that B is an older box, and A is the new style. this would explain why they were told to unbox another one and put it on display, but it does leave one wondering what happened to the note to discount the other one to move it down the road.

you can quickly tell them apart by the keys. A has the new style key that is hinged in the head, while B has a traditional key that is one piece.

what happened to the sale? why are they bringing them down from the top of the racks now? is the sale going to happen soon? why did they change the box, and not the sku number (i understand keeping the model number, but some of the parts are different).

these are the kind of things that drive me crazy.

Why are you surprised the product was set out for sale? Father's day was yesterday and June 6th was several weeks ago.

Home Depot often places black stretch wrapped pallets of stuff all over the store shortly before a holiday or right before a sale they are having. I have no idea why they need to keep the sale items under black wrap like it is a state secret or something.

Black stretch wrap is often used to hopefully reduce pilfering and sun fade during shipping.

sorry, i was not clear. none of it was on sale, nor has it been on sale for weeks, since at least the beginning of may.

all of the stuff that had been brought down had large placards with the current list prices on them.

It was all out on Friday when I went too with huge sale signs. My guess is the sale is over and they just have not put them back yet.

The "race track" is the large aisles that make a rectangle around the store. Usually the front aisle by the registers, the lumber aisle, the widest aisle at the other end (for us it's by outdoor and electrical), and the wide aisle about 2/3 toward the rear of the store, parallel to the front wall. I'm guessing all that means is that they'll be set up in the "race track." Typically along the front somewhere, so everyone will see them right away.

They are pretty good at losing track of inventory once it goes to the top of the racks. If it was supposed to go out on June 6, maybe they just realized they hadn't brought them down in time.

Most of the time the "sale" items at Home Depot are special SKUs that tend to go down in price once the sale is over. Since the stuff had a date of June 6th that is probably when the sale started.

Anyone remember the two packs of Ryobi batteries that went down to like $25 weeks after Christmas due to too much inventory?

I do remember those and have been waiting patiently for that to happen again. I was at Home Depot, another one in the Boston area, and did not notice anything on sale. Then again I was only on one end of the store buying stuff for the wife in the plant section for Father's day. Go figure.

Just think of Homer's Depot as a Land of Enchantment; similar to Disney World... There are people, scenes, and amusement features for all ages... I try to not take the place seriously,, but simply enjoy the free entertainment.... They are My go-to place for wiring supplies and some power tools; as they are well stocked and reasonably priced.

Oh, you mean the part of the store where they pile **** for me to walk around? People stop to look at it and traffic completely stops until they are done looking? That part?

of course, isn't that how a race track works?

personally, i really appreciate it when they vary the placement of the piles, so you can't walk in a straight line, and have to weave around them.

i won't mention the display cartons that are only open on one side, so i can't even see what they are selling.

i can't decide if it is by corporate design, cluelessness by the employees, or employees who do it on purpose because they are bored (or evil, i suppose).

That **** drives me nuts. I used to work at Target and they have (had? I don't go there often now that I moved away) a corporate policy against having stuff in the aisles. Its almost Nazi-ish how they respond to the employee "tubs" being out when you're trying to stock merchandise. They want it to be like magic elves stock the shelves and the customers should never notice. Annoying to work for, but damn is it a nice place to shop!

so, i dropped by hd last night to see what had happened with all those boxes.

they were all back up on the top of the racks. i guess they were just rearranging them. they didnt take the pink "father's day sale" notices off them, they just hoisted them back up.

wow.

I went to HD tonight and purchased a 52" Husky Tool Chest. As I'm talking myself into the purchase (which I had already done) I looked over and saw similar boxes to the one I was purchasing. I did not see a price on them but noticed the fathers day stickers this thread mentions. I asked someone how much they were and the lady said she had no clue where they came from or why they had no HD marking on them at all. There were 3 of them just sitting there in the middle of everything else. They were $348 (the one I purchased was $298) and the only difference was the more expensive one had an adjustable height to the work bench on top.
