Since I'm not getting out to many sales, I've been fulfilling the urge with eBay auctions. Here's what arrived tonight for $58 and change.

Craftsman 19-1/2" hip top tool box, beat up but not broken. I'm leaving the finish exactly as is.

Inside were mostly Craftsman =V= tools but a nice mix of other vintage C-man and other brands, like Snap-on, S-K, New Britain, Walden, US-MADE Husky. The Vise Grips are an early pre-release lever version, and the slip joint pliers are J.P. Danielson.

The bottom holds the reason I bought the whole toolbox: a bunch of DBE wrenches, as well as combos, DOEs and a big adjustable, plus extensions, another ratchet, a breaker bar, a ball peen and a pair of Japanese-made lineman pliers. Brands include Craftsman, Bonney, a nearly compete set of Barcalo Buffalo deep offsets, Lectrolite, Bluepoint, Sears, and a brittle, unusable Crown top ratchet wrench pouch.

Topop those k-d hose clamp pliers are handy, an example of a use would be pinching off heater hoses with them when replacing a heater core so coolant doesnt drain out onto the ground.

DOE wrenches are Cornwell and Bonney, and the right angle DOE’s are also Bonney. All old (20’s or 30’s) SAE. Unbranded copper hammer and file cards.

Seeking help on identifying and dating the Craftsman box (plastic) and contents. It’s a complete matching set of auger bits from 4 to 16, near mint condition. All with a Circle-D (D) mfgr’s mark. The red holders are plastic and spring loaded.

Here is the marking on the shank…

If it helps, this patent notice is on the inside of the lids…

The only thing I know about Craftsman is wartime tools, especially geometric C underline Craftsman Circle-H and BE socket sets. This case and the bit set is way outside of my niche, but too interesting to pass up.

Based on the vaguely geometric C, the style of the bits, and the case materials, I am guessing 1950’s, but that is pure conjecture. The twist drill brace was with it, but I can’t find a marking, and besides that, it doesn’t look contemporary to the case to me.

Are there any Craftsman auger guys here? I will probably post it as a query on the Vintage forum as well.

Picked up an electrician's tool bag full of tools for $40.
Fluke tester, all the pliers and screwdrivers are Kleins.
I assume the jumper cables are for jumpering meter lugs?
Question: What is a Brooks 1000 SP2825? Looks to be a load tester of some kind. Has a heating element in it. Nothing on Google or the Brooks website.

Two yard sales. $6 total. There was a bucket with a half dozen wood-handled monkey wrenches and some big Billings DOEs, but I don't intentionally collect either, so I escaped with cash left in my pocket.

At least some people are finding good stuff. I went to 5 garage sales, 1 pawn shop, and 1 thrift store. The only thing I saw worth buying was a Morse hole saw kit for $30, but I passed on it.

The only score today besides a 4 lb box four inch deck screws was this snap on 1/2 drive ratchet for a whopping $1.50....

That is a very nice set of brace auger bits. I'm not an expert on the C-man logo's but I think it's 40's and maybe even during WW2 with the case being plastic. Rationing ... I would be interested in that set if you are looking to sell!

I was kinda hoping 40s when I bought it, Rust Junkie, but I have my doubts. Most of the auger bit sets I have seen (Engineers, Signal Corps, and Ordnance Dept) came in canvas rollups with pockets, or wooden boxes. Right now I am looking to research, ID, and date. What I do with it will depend on that.

Thanks, Paul!

I'm not saying they are military... I'm saying the case was (or may have been) made of plastic to conserve metal during the war years. It's only my guess though

Lug, I spot checked about a dozen Craftsman catalogs from late 30's to early 60's, both power and hand tools, and didn't find that style drill bit, much less that case... :dunno:

I hit a few right after work and did pretty good then I answered a CL ad and got my clock cleaned! I should have stopped at the garage sale... For 21 bucks at the sales I got
A 1960 Crown logo Craftsman miter saw made by superior
Pair of M. Klein swiveling screw drivers
Boston pencil sharpener
automatic center punch
A cool Awl
A made in Japan companion 3-1/2 vise-Don't ask me why??? I guess because it was spotless and 5 bucks...

Then I went to school. The guy running the cl ad is a hand tool & machinery appraiser :wtf:! I got an education from this guy. We haggled a bit then I got him to show me his collection. After giving him lots of compliments on his collection and his knowledge(to soften him up) we went back to haggling . I felt my self getting worked but was more interested in how he was doing it to stop. I had to see his close. This guy was good. Every once in a while I get lost in the haggle and lose sight of the actual tools. That's never a good thing . I know I could have walked away at any time but I guess I wanted to pay for the education . Any way this is what I over paid for 200 bucks!
H. Chapin's old plow(plough) plane-only one blade
Stanley 78 rabit plane- dated 6-7-10
Wilton Chicago 8400 swivel base - date 11-52
6 oz Atha ball peen hammer
Stanley sw No. 36 3"caliper-mint condition
Starrett No. 425 3" caliper
Starrett 6 " combination square
Starrett 7" didviders
Starrett 5" inside/outside calipers

The last photo is of the guys business card. Check it out ... it's wood! We exchanged info and he said he'll hit me up when he runs across vise's

Outlaw I have C-man brace bits like these. I'm not sure who made them , maybe Irwin? The case is the really interesting part. What era was that logo used?

It's hard to tell, the "C" is the earlier style, but not a hint of the underline, and the changeover away from that was definitely supplier specific, and in a few cases took a long time.

Private Lugnutz, there is a real similar set in the 1957 catalog, page 27. No picture of the case closed and the bits are marked normally, (1/4, 5/16, 3/8 etc.) not in 16ths only like yours. I think yours is an earlier version. http://www.blackburntools.com/artic...ives/sears/pdfs/sears-craftsman-1957-hand.pdf

Of course, the one year I missed checking, but I also missed that set in the '60 catalog... :willy_nil

The '57 set mentions the plastic tips, and the both the ]57 and '60 specifically excluded that they are included in the set. 13 bits, 14 pcs. including the box... Another thing in the '60 catalog is the 6 pc set is specifically mentioned they are made in west Germany. no statement either way on the 14 pc set...

In '57 the box was available separately, and was listed as plastic, with metal hinge and hasp. Seems likely this is the right year band...

They say it's a Chas Parker #205 but maybe they mean 205 lbs?? I couldn't find a #205 referenced anywhere. Think it'd be worth the jaunt?

BlueBolt and Outlaw,
Thanks for the extra research and analysis. By coincidence, there is a very similar looking set for sale on eBait, with the red spring-loaded holders, but in a gray wooden case. No photo of the shank marking, unfortunately. Implies the same mfgr and an evolution in the case.

That plow plane is beautiful. That Sears branded miter box must have been made by Millers Falls.

I'm guessing around 60lbs. A #104 I found was listed at 47lbs. The pad of paper in the background and the tool box also lead me to believe that is about right size wise.

On the way to the lumber yard I decided to hit a few sales... It wasn't very convenient dragging a trailer to 4 estate sales with crowded streets but I was after one specific item ... I didn't get it . MK1 grenade.WW1 style.. But I did manage to score a Mark 2 US Navy K-bar, and a 1942 dated 37MM artillery shell ! I grabbed a few other small items along the way . $28 bucks for every thing

Went to an estate sale yesterday morning that turned out to be pretty awesome. Ended up snagging a handful of items.

Small set of 12 Nicholson files in cool box
Craftsman crown logo precision screwdriver set (cracked plastic cover and one of the blade inserts doesn't match)
Small ball peen hammer (no name on it but I like it)
Long blade Xcelite 3/32 slotted screwdriver
Stanley 55-045 small pry bar
Small sliding knife
Small map measuring wheel
Utica pliers
A bunch of mechanical pencils (including two Norma 4-colors which apparently have a following)
Starrett pocket level (actually just marked "The L.S.S. Co" which I think makes it an old one)

Not really a tool, but I have stashed some tools in it already, so I'll throw it in here. Got this awesome small chest of drawers at the same estate sale, which I believe was actually home-made by the former owner of the estate who had a nice little workshop in the basement set up for some woodworking. Perfect for a night stand plus storage for small stuff.

Total cost for all of this including the little chest was $15. They were practically giving everything away at this place. I'm normally a haggler but at these prices I'd feel too guilty. There was still tons of good stuff for cheap remaining by the time I left, just nothing else I'm in the market for.

And at an entirely different estate sale I got this Stanley Handyman clamp-on vise for $2.

Don't know if I can save any of the socket stuff it's so rusty... we'll see. There's a "Jaguar" wrench in there I have to look up. Could be common, could be something. And more Crafty. I'm no wood guy but they look like lathe chisels to me. The box is a shambles, but the chisels are decent. I'll have questions.

Snagged from CL this morning. Old librarian's(?) desk with swiveling typewriter platform. Made by Weis. Perfect for my 1930s portable Remington and other period desk clutter.

I run my gas powered welder on forklift propane tanks, and my torches an forge with regular tanks.
Found these 3 at a garage sale for $7 a piece this morning. All well within cert.
