Thanks for posting those pages. They provide a fascinating and very detailed insight into the processes that went into bringing to life those objects of our obsession.
Great work finding that info!

TOP: i just thought of a good way for you to not waste your time in case the guy selling all those vises is firm on his pricing. remember when you took maybe 8-10 or so restored vises to your job site and lined them up on the tailgate? if you have a few ready to sell and they need a home what a better place to park your truck than next to a guy selling 100 vises? just a thought. do you have that picture of the tailgate full of vises that you sold that day at work maybe a year or so ago still saved on your computer?

That's a big mutha! What about some spec's? What size jaw and how much does it weigh?

Oh, yeah, to the OP - where did you find it and how much did it set you back???

Cole bench vise model without the anvil for sale in San Francisco. asking $50

Too bad about the big weld repair where the dynamic jaw broke off the slide sometime in the past. Somebody did a nice job painting it over. I wonder if the seller knows or will admit that it has been repaired?

8.5" jaws as stated above. I have not weighed it, but one of the other guys here who has one did some time back and said 303# total. Seems about right!

I found it on CL in Pittsburgh. I negotiated to $350 which I thought was a great price for something few people have ever seen in the flesh. I missed a Model 58 Heavy Chipping Vise last year and it sold for $800. Was bidding on one on eBay a while back and said heck with it at $780 - and I would have to have driven to Baltimore to retrieve it. I realize some people think it's stupid money, but to me these are one of a kind, and everyone who's seen it and has an appreciation for American Big Iron thinks it's awesome. I'll restore it over the winter and put it to light use in my shop.

She'll be well kept and cared for!

Yeah, CL is full of idiots and liars. There was a decent sized vise here in the Pittsburgh area that obviously had the support "shelf" (or whatever you call the extension of the base that helps support the moving jaw) broken off and re-brazed back on.

The guy must have got called on it because he edited his ad to say that "It's not broken. Someone inlaid brass in there to take the play out."

I came this close to copying his ad and telling everyone that it was indeed broken. :eyecrazy:

I saw this Rock Island earlier today and thought "no cracks....really? What about that huge section of the slide missing?"

Dieselsmoke 350 is a killer price! I love big iron and feel they are a good investment as well. Congrats on a great find!

DS: as others have said you found a BEAST and good to know you know the value of one. in my opinion you got it for half price and restored it would go for big money. not surprising Pittsburgh is coming up with some HUGE vises because there was a Reed 109 last month up there. WELL DONE and also welcome to GJ and especially the vice for vises thread. or should we just call us Visaholics?

Shift: i have a guy in my area selling a few vises that wants premium money for them because he tells me his welding skills can make a broken vise better than it came out of the factory. he fails to mention welds on any of his vises in his ads though. you can't blame Craigslist because as we all know it's a great place to use to move your STUFF or pick up a few things. i suppose if we all paid for our ads they would have staff to ban the posters that are not truthful or those spammers that will send emails and texts to any new listing.

GMAN: if that Rock Island was $40-50 i'd pick it up for parts because it looks like it was barely used and probably dropped to cause that break. good eye young man on the missing hunk of slide.

Guilty as charged.

Where was this Reed 109 sighting? I got a buddy who would saw his arm off for one. His family worked at Reed. If there's a link to it, I'd love to see it.

Top: are you really going to let asking prices stop you from seeing that many vises for sale in one spot if it's not too far to drive?

Drives Here's that pic of the tailgate of finished vise's I displayed at work for some plumbers.
The other pic is the back of my truck from the last time I went to St. Louis. 250 mile one way and 900 bucks. I made two trips there like that last year and none this year.... so far! I don't have many cleaned up right now. I have just been doing custom orders. Once I get the shop finished I'll be able to crank out several per week!

Dieselsmoke, PghJKB said it was on CL. for 2 weeks.---It's easy to miss the very thing you're looking for if you don't check CL every day.---And who has time to do that?---Some may, but not me.

Drives, the Reed 109 is no longer on CL, perhaps it sold. It was there for over two weeks.

Haven't been on here in a while. A reed 109 with 3 bolt pattern is 290# and the 4 bolt hold down is 297#. Yes I did buy the Reed in Pittsburgh. Some think the price is crazy. I went to a sale recently and a big 8" Prentiss brought 1500. The buyer was happy to get it and put it in his blacksmith shop. To that I say try to find another. I have looked for 15 years and only ever found 4 period counting my two. I have never seen a Reed 209. The vise does have a crack on the tail but I will get that repaired. The other rough Reed 109 is headed to Colorado to have full surgery to get it back in shape.
I look at these big vises as an investment. They will hold their money. Just compare that to a boat, motorcycle or any other toy and they depreciate a lot.

Picked up a very clean Wilton just wire brushed it and used some Kroil and steel-wool to clean it up, price was very good ;)

Yeah, I hear ya, but I am kinda OCD about checking CL daily....guess I'll have to stay on here more so the other inmates can steer me to where I can get my next hit :D

$1k was probably out of reach for me at the moment anyway...buying go-fast parts for my truck is killing my free cash flow...

Cheers to Demoman

Chilang:
Is that a 350 or is it bigger?
Nice minimalist clean up job.

Is there a reason you used Kroil instead of WD40 or PB? Unless you get Kroil free at work or something like that, the other ones are way less expensive and MUCH easier to come by. PB smells better too.
I like Kroil for loosening up stuck fasteners and WD40 with Scotchbrite pads for scrubbing.

It is a 350 used Kroil because I think it helps remove surface rust better then WD its not cheap I would agree. Steel wool seem to work well and I wanted to leave the paint in tact for now. Knowing how I operate something on TV will get my blood boiling and to calm down I will be in my garage for a few days and it will get repainted.

A good reason not to watch TV...
Here is a good coincidence. I just got home with this 350 bullet two hours ago. Looks like there might be enough original paint underneath the dirt and ancient oil to recover a nice looking vise. Jaws are in great shape. All 3 handles straight. Finger savers still on. Action is smooth. Dated 10-80
I bought it from the nephew of a now deceased machinist. The nephew inherited 5 vises but I only found him today on C/L . This is the last one he is selling. He kept a little exposed screw Hollands for himself.

Wish I would have taken more pics. Jacobson is missing the B. Swivel jaw pin snapped off. The tail end of the slide was solid, no keyhole cutout but slightly convex. Apparently they were absorbed by Rock Island.

On the other end of the spectrum, I got this clamp on swivel base vise today. Jaws are 2-3/8" and vise is kinda hefty for what it is, maybe 10-12 lbs. It says made in USA and has 2 patent #s. One is the same as my other Stanley clamp on, and it looks like a Stanley.

I thought that the hub looked Rock Island-ish .
Yea, those clamp ons are dangerous. So much easier to collect than full size bolt ons. :)
When I see one it's difficult to come up with an excuse not to grab it.

Came across an Athol 614 on Craigslist this morning. As usual for me lately, it's several hours away in one direction. Plus I'm getting pickier, looking for bigger ones in the 6-8 inch, 100+ pound category. Anyway, had the person send me some more pics, info that was not in the ad. Looks to be in great shape, and a good buy at $60 with the stand included.

Millers Falls also sold and/or made that type of clamp on. Are those patent numbers on yours? if so, that could be a clue as to who made and who re-sold contracted vises? I've been thinking I should gather all mine that style for a "family shot", and see what others, have for the breed.
