That is kinda a loaded question. What type of steel and what is the surface now? Each of them is a little different. Some have to be prepped with an acid, power washed, primed and painted. However others just need to be power washed and painted. Depends on the metal and the type of paint used.

I recently replaced the steel roof on my oldest pole barn. I had it repainted maybe 8 years ago by a "professional". He obviously did no prep and painted just before a rain storm with the enamel I requested. It had a "beautiful" hammer tone finish and subsequently began flaking off in large (3-4 inch) chunks. My wife paid at the time before I got home from work.
The new roof (28' X 32') cost $2,150.00 for removal of old, materials, and labor. The contractor arrived at 8:45 AM and left before 3:00 PM the same day. It's "really" beautiful this time!

I used some very cheap tractor supply farm & implement enamel paint and hardener. Prep is everything. I power washed, then scrubbed, then power washed again, waited a day or so to dry, and sprayed it like you would a car. Turned out fine. I couldn't find the correct green so I went with John Deere green and you cannot tell...

A painter once told me "you could paint air if you used the right primer"
The key is to know what your surface is (raw metal, old paint , primered, rusty metal etc.) and prepare it accordingly. A galvanized surface requires a different prep than a prefinished surface. If the prefinished surface is in good shape the prep could be rather simple. If it's in bad shape it could require a lot of work if you intend to have the new finish last. Some prefinished roofs with a factory finish may not hold the new coat of paint (requiring some proper steps before applying) depending on what the original finish is. So that is important to know.

^^^^^ this

I have just about every metal roof condition at my home....from 100 year old standing seam roof on the house to brand new galvanized tin on a small garage. I have a metal roof with factory applied paint and a 10 year old galvanized tin roof waiting to be painted. Each roof is treated differently.
