For soft jaws: I prefer aluminum for my machine Vises and wood for the woodworking vise. I also use conveyor belt material for irregular shaped workpieces and for the pipe vise.

What is everyone's favorite soft jaws? Looking for 5.5" in both aluminum and poly/rubber. This is going on a 1755.

Aluminum works for the vast majority of applications. Poly/rubber is best for fragile things like golf clubs, fishing rods, etc.

Re: Vise pedestal

If you are short on good sense like me, here is a way to make a pedestal out of a fire hydrant.
The second flange up from the floor works as a swivel, and with all the mass,it is smooth, with enough friction for sawing, filing or planing
I mounted one swivel jaw, one fixed jaw and one smooth jaw permanently.
The others are slated for other benches.

Back in the early pages of this thread, GB member Catalyze had posted his vise "tree" stand; very cool

I like yours even more, that vintage looking fire hydrant makes it like a work of art.

Thanks for the additional info and the pic.

Doug

Doug you are BAD LUCK! Not 20 minutes after your post I got an email from my Boston minion stating he got me that Wall Vise for the price I wanted! And here I didn't want to spend any more $$$$ this month on vises!!!!

Holy ****, i had no idea that a fire hydrant weighs 500+ pounds minimum!

Definitely the coolest (functional) stand I've seen here.

If a hydrant is installed, and hooked to a water main...

You have the World's Champion ---

TOE STUBBER!!!

(That was experience speaking!!!)

Better even than Outlaw's 5198 doorstop...:D:evil:

It's more of a blue green, Duplicolor auto paint. I'll have to get the color...The finish was pretty nice on the horseshoe and the screw. Both were covered in lots of paint. The finish you see is the result of a wire wheel. Tempted to go full polish.....

Certainly not one of those monster vises that you guys seem to find, but I picked up this small 3-1/2" PARKER at the flea market on Saturday for just $4.

Cool little vise you have there.

Maybe Getridone, VA or one of the vise experts can add more info, I seem to recall there being a "Parker" vise company not related to the very well known Chas or Charles Parker. Yours definitely does not have any of the characteristics of the Chas Parker vises.

Think it's the same Chas Parker, just a low end homeowner type vise.

I had no intention of bringing a vise home again because my 5198 has been my steady for awhile now and she's been filling all my needs and desires. But, I'm sure many of you have had similar intentions and couldn't resist. I have always admired member SteevO's red Craftsman and a couple other here have the same era/style Craftsman painted red. I thought if I ever got another vise, it would be like those.

I found this at an estate sale and paid the asking price of $15.00. Some A-hole had put a not for sale sign on it. One of the guys running the sale saw me admiring it and asked if I wanted it. I mentioned the sign and after he talked to the other people there he told me that he had no idea about the sign and that I could have the vise. I left my phone number and told him to call me if there was a mix up with vise being for sale and that I would return it. He replied that if I didn't hear from him by 2000 hrs, the vise was mine.

The vise is a Craftsman 5237 and I haven't found any info online including Sears catalog scans about this particular vise. It's a Rock Island if I'm not mistaken.

All is well with it except for one of the jaws is a little buggered probably by a failed attempt at removal. It also could use a swivel handle. The jaws are 4.5" and open 9". Can anyone shed anymore light on this vise?

Picked up a Morgan 340b swivel jaw vise on eBay for 60 bucks. Weighs 65lbs and sure feels like it. The vise is pretty clean just a little rusty. Currently trying to free the swivel pin.

SA: your Rock Island Craftsman looks a little rough, but you surely didn't pay too much for it. those #'s you found are part #'s most likely so the dynamic mate to the static at the factory would find each other after prep and finish work. Rock Island usually stamped dates on top of their dynamic slides just behind their static jaw so see if yours has one there.

Rusty: great looking swivel jaw Morgan and i can't say i've seen one before so they must be somewhat rare. anybody else own one?

Rouge: yes the versa vise is a very handy little vise and here's a video you and others can watch if you haven't seen it yet showing how to use it.

GANY: PUP (sorry can't think of his full member's name) has posts on the Craftsman block thread and i think he made a separate thread in the vintage tool section about the labels he's been making. it sounds like he can make a nice one for you if you have a good one to copy. i have several labels on my Rock Island vises, but my cell camera doesn't take great close ups. i'd be willing to try if you can't find a good one to copy.

just found the thread so here's the link. good luck
