Just a heads up. Amazon has the Flir ONE Smartphone thermal imager on sale for $179. This device turns your smartphone into a thermal imaging camera. It has a native FLIR Lepton 3 core thermal imaging unit built in.
For those of you wondering what you can use this for:
As a side note, there are aftermarket apps which will enable you to use the full 160x120 thermal resolution of the Lepton 3 core in the Flir ONE, instead of the 120x90 that the FLIR app uses. This is the second generation FLIR One (the first generation only supported iPhone 5/5S).
For those of you wondering what you can use this for:
- You can use it to find thermal leaks (cold air getting it or hot air getting out). This can tell you where you have failed insulation, allowing you to better insulate your house. This is especially useful for finding drafts around windows and wall outlets.
- You can use it to spot water leaks in your walls and ceiling long before they show up as a visible spot (they will appear colder than their surroundings).
- You can use it to find pet stains on the carpet (they will initially appear warmer than the surroundings when fresh or colder than surroundings when old).
- You can use it to see where people had placed their hands.
- You can use it to check circuits that are damaged (chips which have shorted out will be crazy hot)
- You can use it to observe circuit panels for overheated circuits.
- You can use it to spot animals or people in the dark.
- You can use it to take body pictures in changing conditions.
