I am looking for a larger set of Hex bit sockets. When I say larger, I am looking for sizes 10mm - 22mm

It's expensive to buy them individually, does anyone have any recommendations for a nice quality set?

Hazet has the 985 set. Short style, 1/2 inch drive, and includes 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, & 19mm sizes. If you want a 22 mm, you would have to add the 986-22 (regular length).

Hell my father gave me both of these.... I figured he never used them. This one and the set above, I bought the snap on metal box to house them. The largest in here is a 5/8 I think.

Look at hazet there 985 series is hard to beat keep in mind larger sizes jump and these are 1/2 drive

Vim impact 50 set covers a good range

I have snap on 4-14 and then jumps to 17,19 in 1/2 and 22mm in 3/4 from hazet

But honestly I have never used higher than 17mm on hex and 11mm/7/16 on mb calipers and 12,14 on euro drain plugs for differentials

Sunnex makes a decent impact set. I have various loose sizes from 12mm to 17mm in 1/2" drive and 17mm, 19mm, 21mm, and 24mm in 3/4" drive. When the fasteners are that big, 1/2" drive often isn't enough.

Remember that for regular socket head cap screws, the hex is smaller than the thread diameter. A 22mm hex socket would be for an M30 screw. You're not going to torque an M30 thread with a 1/2 drive tool.

14 and 17mm are common. I have a 12mm that I don't think I have ever used.

My thought too. I had that set when I worked as a machine setup guy. Should have taken my whole box when I left and said keep my deposit, but I was way too poor to think about that at the time.

Advance Auto Parts currently has the Gearwrench 1/2" drive sets on sale for $19.99. I'm on my phone and can't make the link thing work.

SK has a good set. It does skip a few sizes. But they do make those few sizes and sell them individually.

There are sizes that are almost never used. I work on machine tools that are 95% socket head caps screws. I've never needed a 12mm, 7/16, or 9/16.

Lot's of sets skip 9/64. If you use a lot of 8-32 screws you will want one.

The SK set skips 9mm and doesn't include 19mm.

But it all depends on what you deal with. I've used both 7/16 and 9/16 several times.

I've got a Duralast 1/2 drive set that has 12, 14, and 17 mm. I think it was around $18. I needed a 12mm for a transmission plug in a car I was fixing for a coworker, and knew that the trans plug in my truck was a 17, so I just bought the set instead of the individual sockets. I don't think I've ever used the 14.

thanks for all your replies. I have just confirmed and these are the sizes I need:

11mm, 12mm, 15mm, 16mm, 18mm, 22mm

I already have bits under 11mm, so there is no point buying a kit with sizes under this. For the sizes I want who offers a kit with best quality to price ratio?

Those are odd-lot sizes in metric. Check a DIN chart--as mentioned earlier, the standard set is...

12-14-17-19 etc.

So You're really looking for a custom bundle or odd lot. Snap on and Apex industrial, for example, will make you a custom set, but you pay the price of the individual sockets in it. The upside is you don't pay for stuff you don't need so the cost on average evens out a bit (no pun intended).

DIN is sadly obsolete it's now ISO or JIS depending on what you're working on.

I say sadly because I grew up working on cars with either SAE or DIN fasteners and it's hard to retrain my brain for the "new" head sizes. At least for regular hex head fasteners I always reach for 10, 13, 17, 19, 21 but those are no longer the "Standard" sizes.

Most of the stuff I worked on didn't have a lot of socket head cap screws so I never really learned the standards for those like I did for hex heads...

Apart from Koken does anyone know who does a good quality 11mm hex bit? Snap-on do FAM11E but it's very long and I want a shorter bit. I have looked at hazet and stahlwille and neither do an 11mm bit.

Buy the Snap On and cut it to the exact length you want. I find that a cut-off wheel works best, but a hacksaw or sawzall will also work fine.

Don't want to cut anything as it invalidates the warranty.

The hex might not be covered. Or you could remove the "original warrantable bit" and install a "regular" hex bit cut to your size and you are done. Regular hex keys to cut are very cheap......

How often do you plan on replacing bits?

The new bit is $10 and doesn't invalidate the warranty on the socket anyway. You're not gonna crack the socket. If your bit gets messed up you just put a new one in. They make stubby bits in 3-10mm and use the same socket base for long and short cersions, so you can just swap em out if you need to, just gate the 'e' version not ones with set screw.. They also have 207FHRM, a low profile hex set of sockets, but the skip from 10 to 12mm.

tommydog35,

Vim Tools makes a stubby, 1/2" drive, 10 piece metric (6-8mm; 10-14mm; 17, 19mm), impact hex set. The model# is IMPACT-VM6. The set is made in Taiwan. I bought it last year from an independent industrial tool supplier for $40. Here are some pictures from this set: LINK.

How do you find those bits as the price is very cheap? Are they better than something like Sunex 2639?

VIM are very good quality, pretty sure they get rebranded by bigger names too. I would not hesitate to buy them, they also offer stubby lengths.

He could even buy this Eklind 11mm key from Zoro and cut it to any length desired. And it is a whopping $ 1.81. It works much easier than trying to get a free replacement. And yes, I have done it many times at work, even with my Snappy hex sockets. https://www.zoro.com/eklind-hex-key-tip-size-11mm-16522/i/G4395912/
