I'm looking for an upright air compressor and found a VR5-8 2014 model for $900. It has the r-15 pump.

Problem is it's a 3 phase unit, and I only have 1ph in my garage.

I would need to get a 1ph 5hp motor and appropriate contactor, to make it work. So is the price right? Thanks for the insight.

You can "update" the starter with the proper heater or just replace it with a new one. Figure $130 for the starter and $280-330 for the motor. You can offset your cost by selling that nice Baldor Super E motor. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. I listed a 5HP 3 phase motor and had a call back within 3 hours and guy picked up next afternoon. I would probably try to check the pump before paying for it. Consider these are around $2500-2700 new so you're paying half price for something used. It's up to you. I like the Champion R15 pumps. I've got one and waiting on the second one to be delivered. Remember by code wiring is #10 THHN (in conduit) or #8 Romex. I have mine on a 30A breaker and it does fine. If you go to about 1:20 in this video you can hear what it will sound like (this is not mine)
. They run at about 700-734 RPM.

Thank you so much. I'm an electrician by trade, and you're absolutely right.

Ok I bought it. The guy really took care of it and it had less than one hour on it.

If anyone is looking for a compressor, look hard at a Champion. I've been really impressed so far with the quality construction, low compressor noise and support from them.

I did have to buy a single phase Baldor and re wire the mag starter, it runs up to 120 psi from 0 in about 5 minutes.

We have 2 and they work great. Be aware that the auto drain will spray rusty water. I see there is a tube on it so you should be OK.

Good tip. Thanks. We live in the desert so our humidity is normally very low. I have noticed on each cycle end the auto drain decompresses. But no water comes out. I have also checked the tank petcock and no water comes out either.
