Had a great weekend, but damn it was cold! Will share my pics over a couple of posts as I get to them
So the weekend was Webby's Mud Run. It takes place at a little country town showground. During the day there's an informal show with everyone's cars, and laps on the dirt track. At night there are bands. Nice laidback show, organised just enough to make it work and laidback enough to be good fun.
Here we are before we headed up for the 4 hour roadtrip to get there. 46 Ford, 38 Ford, Commer
Here's some pics of the Commer van we took. It's been fitted with a mid-mounted 283ci Chev engine. A little bit of work, and straight headers made it nice and loud inside.
The Chev transplant got plenty of attention
Out on the track. Not much speed, but lots of fun!
Sure made a mess inside

As did the fire bucket I cut out
And the trip home

Love the Comer. About 30 years ago we grafted a HQ one tonner frame to the mid section of a Combi tray-back. Never got finished but was lethal in a straight line 454 Powerglide and 4.11 9" rear. Love your pictures.

On the weekend a mate got some free tickets for an AFL game (Australian Football League). I'd never watched a game before, so was interested to check it out. For our American friends AFL is probably more similar to basketball than it is Gridiron/American Football. It's played on an oval field, you can kick or pass the ball any way you want, and to score you need to kick it between the goal posts. 6 points for the middle posts, 1 point for the goals on either side. Good fast flowing game, really enjoyed it.
My wife and I have this week off, to take some much overdue leave. Today we headed down the south coast, brekky in Picton and lunch in Berry. On the way we stopped in at an antique store in Bowral and I found an old light for my bike project - looks great on the rack arm.
And thought I'd share a pic of afternoon tea - the humble Aussie lamington. Sponge cake inside, chocolate icing all over, and then dipped in coconut.

Last weekend we checked out a local car show. This is an Aussie Charger. Much more compact than their American cousins, with the race versions powered by a 265ci Hemi six. The coolest part of this one was the 3 baby seats across the back seat.

This is a great locally built hot rod. So many different parts. Home built teardrop trailer too.

There's something about that boot line and rear window arrangement that looks very custom...... Can't put my finger on it, but it looks like a great XA - XC (my favourite Falcon).

I'm no Falcon expert, but it looks like the drip rail might be shaved and the rear window flush mounted? Just a guess comparing to this one I found online. It's fair to say the blue one was fairly modified.
The pebblecrete one? If you're an architecture nerd you'd call it 'brutalist'. I just call it 'chernobyl chic'.

With those kind of shots I'll generally slightly edit the brightness level and nudge the contrast up a smidge. The phone struggles with low light and contrast of light, which is why the pic of the vice looks so grainy.

So last night after dinner in the city we had a bit of a drive to enjoy the warm night - 24 degrees in winter! I stopped in at Classic Throttle Shop in North Sydney to drool over the windows.
And today a bit more work on the pushie project after mowing the lawn, coming along nicely
Tomorrow we're off to Bathurst to visit my brother & family.

You have a fantastic natural flair with those bikes that, now that I know where you're going, is brilliant, and a great sort of "out there".
And I've never seen a frame design like that before. But it has massive appeal in a strange sort of way.
Love it. 
Don't know if I could ride them though (my daughters would die laughing - I suspect.......).

Attention to detail comment made me laugh. Took one of the grips in to the hardware store to match some paint to it - and then unknowingly lost the grip somewhere! Searched the whole garage, car and even went back to the shop, Nope, gone without a trace. But I have paint that matches it now.
Some pics from today.
Wife picked up her new record, one of the early White Stripes album (first pressing). Sleeve is a little worn but the record is mint. After lots of indecision, we should be getting our record player soon.
I bought some replacement grips for my bike. Brooks is the same company that made the leather seat on my bike, so the grips are a perfect match.
And then we had lunch at the Deus Cafe. Deus is a bike/surf brand that's done really well for itself. One half of the building is bike shop, the other half is a cafe. And when I say cafe, it still has a handful of bikes proudly on display, as well as automotive prints on all the walls.

Bike build is complete Well it needs a few things adjusted to get her running just so, but not much.

What record player are you going for? I have had a few, and have parts to build a Goldring (rebadged Lenco) idler drive based deck at some point when I find the time... Do you have a decent hifi system?

Thanks guys! Pretty happy with how it has come out. Have just been through the finished bikes threads on the Rat Rod Bikes forum, damn there are some great builds on there. Towards the end of the week I'll pick out my faves and share them on my blog, and post up the link so you can see them.
We're getting a new Audio Technica LP60. I know nothing about vintage players, and these get great reviews (for the money), so I figured this was the safe and easy option to get something we knew would work. The other bonus is the model we're looking at has bluetooth speakers. We'll just run it through my wife's guitar amp initially, but the plan is get a decent set of speakers for the tv and then we can run the turntable through that too. We're hardly hifi nerds, just want to play some of our records. My wife was buying Stray Cats records when she was a teenager, and hasn't actually listened to them yet.

Congratulations in advance on your first turntable purchase!!! I hate to be a wet blanket, but I don't think your records will sound very good through a guitar amp. You see, the frequency response of a hi fi amp is designed to be flat. A guitar amp's response is usually anything but flat. The levels (voltages) are probably not right either. You would need to use the phono preamp built into the turntable to get the right frequency response from it. Which puts you at line level, which is likely way too hot for a guitar amplifier. Could you run it through your computer until you get a hi fi amp and speakers?

Yeh... I'm afraid I'm on the same page as Joe. If you can pick up an older hifi amp and some speakers, even cheapies (or freebies!) then you'll have a whole world of massively better sound. You can often pickup old floorstanding speakers and stereo amplifiers for very cheap or free that are quite good (better sounding than virtually any small 'home theatre' speakers) as people want to 'upgrade' to surround sound and small (and mostly crappy sounding) modern looking speakers. My stereo in the garage was freebie floorstanding speakers (placed in the rafters) and old hifi amp, and sounds as good as any high end setup would in that space. My stereo inside is also my sound for tv/movies, and visitors are often amazed at the quality of sound and immersion for tv/movies from my 'old' stereo setup (not overly expensive, a Yamaha stereo amplifier and some big floorstanding speakers I built myself).

Quiet weekend, which was nice. Checked out some houses which are for sale down past Lyndon's way, and another one up the mountains. Not looking to buy till next year, but keen to keep an eye on what we can get for what, so we're in a good position when it comes that time. Quiet weekend, which was nice. Checked out some houses which are for sale down past Lyndon's way, and another one up the mountains. Not looking to buy till next year, but keen to keep an eye on what we can get for what, so we're in a good position when it comes that time. Managed to get out of work a little early this arvo to take advantage of the warm weather. Been way too long since my last ride and I felt it! Neat little highlight was seeing a kangaroo and her joey. These trails are just down the road from me.
I've been meaning to update the garage itself, so when I got home from my ride I got some pics of how it is currently.
First I thought I'd share the floorplan I played with in a program called Sweet Home 3D. I figured this was much easier to play with layouts than moving things in person! The green box represents my wife's old car, the blue boxes are storage shelves I bought, the white boxes are other assorted shelves and cupboards, and the workbench. I settled on this layout as it allowed plenty of room to swing open the driver side door, maximum storage, and the easiest route from the car to the door into the house. I also wanted the workbench next to the internal door, as thats the only powerpoint in the entire garage!
And here it is in all its awful mess glory. I really need to get in and have a really thorough sort (and throw) session. But broadly the mowing gear sits at the edge so its really easy to grab regularly. The shelves immediately behind it holds bike parts and car wash gear.
A close up of the shelves. The shelves are from Masters, see them here, really happy with them. For the bike parts I didn't install the top shelves, perfect for wheels and tyres.
On the left we have paints and things, then the cupboards have camping gear in them mostly. Plus a box of bike parts and an overhead projector for art.
In front of the car I have tools and the workbench. As you can see, the fit for the car is pretty tight!

Hewey, all I can see is potential in your garage, a solid weekends work, some tubs and a little rearranging you wont know yourself..

Yeh I agree 1/2 Cup. The general layout is good, just needs a good tidy up and organising.
Not much of an update. Went to the AFL again yesterday (more free tickets via the wife's work). Today was up the coast to near Wyong for a mate's shed warming. He's got a 56 Buick and a 46 Chev, plus his wife has a 70s Bedford van. Actually this is the little shed for his wife, his will come in a little while after some other work on his house and the yard.
