That workbench "Ain't Too Shabby..."

YA DUN GUD, BUBBA!!!

I don't think $35.00 is going to get that 2" Prentiss...

It'll be closer to two bills, me thinks...

Oldie,
I finally got a "Ya dun gud, bubba!" Thanks!

Ex,
Like that Morgan. I'm going to keep looking. I need to get an end vise mounted up too. Right now I have an old Wilton 7" corner vise, but could always upgrade that one too. ;)

KM,
Really nice bench and I'll keep an eye out for a Record. The older ones are apparently indestructible.

6" Unknown Vice
First time poster but long time lurker of mostly this thread and the home workshop ( garage gallery ) threads.
I picked up this 6" metal vice recently pretty cheaply and was wondering if any of you knowledgeable guys would know what brand it could be ? Apart from the "No 6 " cast on the side there are no other makers marks, country of origin etc on it. A pretty minor question but I'm just curious as I like to know what my gear is/ history/country of origin( like my 5" Makita Model 1500 planer I recently bought with absolutely zilch info about it on the web ! ).
I asked a local fitter & turner ( engineer/toolmaker I think you guys call them ) who is english and a wealth of knowledge but he couldn't place it.
It has the little chin on the bottom and seems to be squatter than a lot of the others I see on this site - both English and American
I know we went metric around 1975 and a lot of Asian knockoffs didn't start appearing here until the early '80's so I'd presume with the No 6 on the side that it is from a country that uses the imperial measuring system.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Stewie

Here are some pictures of the Morgan Chicago I posted about 2 days ago. Went back to the pawn shop the next day and picked it up for $45 out the door. I wanted to be out the door for no more than $40, but he said they haven't had it that long and I wasn't going to pass it up over $5.

Nicely done. That's a good price. Should clean up nicely or just use it as-is.

Hey Stewie, welcome to the home of vise fanatics.

Just a guess, but with Dawn being so prevalent in Oz, and like Record, having had some very popular models, they also have some very less common models. Looking at those 4 bolts holding the vise to the base, it doesn't look like anything recent...much before you went metric.

Thanks FMC1959.
Yes, I've had a look at some of the Dawn models in person. I have a 5" Dawn as well and have had a good look on several occasions at some of the others on ebay and Gumtree but nothing like this one. Dawn also likes to cast their name in just about all their products so I assume ( maybe incorrectly ) that it ain't one of theirs. Jacobs is another local brand but it is dissimilar to all theirs as well.

Morgan's are great vise's I love how their jaws are made and how they clean up. 140 is a perfect size for most stuff I have had to use a vise for of course I am not restoring locomotives yet

That's English or a copy and its very old, that's what some English vices looked like before they came up with with the modern pattern. Its not a Parkinson but CW has posted some pics of that type and has scanned old catalogues which would be worth looking in. Probably 100 years old or more.

Here is the Reed 109 that came from Pennsylvania. It is in great shape except the tail has a crack. It is the 4 bolt hold down version and my other 109 is a three bolt. My boys posed for a pic on the vise. It really does not do it justice unless you see it in person so I put a 3" Wilton I had close on the slide for comparison. It is interesting to not it does not have the chin piece that hangs don below the vise that goes against the bench. The book I have shows that with this version There is a lot of the original black paint still on the vise. The guy I got it from said he took it out of the basement of a house and someone gave it to him! Hope you enjoy.
Have you got a weight on that monster? :eyecrazy:

A Record 516 Heavy Chipping vise / vice.
....
I keep an eye open for a 518 or 518 1/2 to come up for sale, but I guess they are even more scarce than the 516.

That is fantastic! Great restore.

I keep an eye out for Record heavy chipping vises over here.........
:dunno:
None yet.......

But speaking of big vises, did anyone get the 634 swivel vise on kijiji near Montreal?
I would looooove to have a swiveler buddy for my static 634.

In case anyone here has interest, I put my restored Morgan 87 up for sale in the classifieds.

I can't imagine owning a 300# vise. Some of the finds on this thread amaze me.

Those in the background are mostly small homeowner type vises. You have to start out small and work your up to the big ones like demoman
I am going to move them to other side of the basement, they seem to always be in the way of those cabinets.

Picked up a small New York Prentiss Vise No. 161 that has 2-1/2" jaws and max opening at 3".

Has a very different connection underneath it, but do think it was for center mounting. However, it also has holes on both side of the base, so could be bolted and held that way as well.

Did quick search, but didn't find another # 161, so as to compare the two in order to see if mine has anything missing on it.

I picked up this Wilton C0 this morning. The guy told me "I wouldn't take less than $40 for it.", so here we go...
Looks in perfect shape including the pipe jaws.

It really is a great size and in great shape, it's very smooth. If it wasnt for the bright blue spray paint I would leave it as is. I plan to clean it up at some point.

GET: i think Trey is DROOLING over your vises and you didn't mention to him that you have twice that many maybe restored and on some cool stands. do you have any more family pics to share please do?

Dutch: i'm not so fond of the parker with the chunk missing out of the slide, but i bet you don't see those often on your side of the pond. i am liking that Parkinson a lot and REALLY LOVE the condition and all the lettering cast on the side.

ALL: for those of you that have basement shops and need to get heavy stuff up and down the stairs either in boxes or on a dolly have you thought about stair lifts? i'm having to install at least one and maybe two for my parents and they work great. anybody own one or have any information on them please post on the thread i started cause i'm still learning. here's the link: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333703

Yes the Parkinson is lovely,
We don't get many Parkers and it actually works quite nicely, under a turn of slack in it. It was parts vise money and would be perfectly useable once the swivel lockdowns have been replaced. Would be fine for a welding vise.

lol ... I used to hunt for the Wilton C0 on CL until I settled for the Craftsman Pro bullet knock-off. I'm officially back in the Wilton hunt again, just for the C0 though to match my C3.

I have a 1780 if anyone in Houston want to do some trading.

That's a "you ****" price! Nice score

I forgot to mention he told me "These vises are pretty expensive." ...then there was a bit of silence while I was waiting for him to come up with a price and then he told me "I wouldn't take less than $40 for it".

He had a wood shop in his house, so the vise is in great shape. He obviously didn't work with metal.

Hello all,
Been watching this thread for a while, all these vises are awesome.
I just finished this Woden I found, 186B/2, 3.5" jaws. I don't know too much about them but it was nice and smooth so I figured I'd put some work in to it. Does anyone know how to date this?
Jaws were pretty used but I cleaned them up and gave some more life, also made some aluminum jaws and will most likely get most use as a light duty soft jaw.
Now that I'm probably hooked, I need to keep a look out for Wilton's and Parker's.

Cheers

I think there may have been slightly different Woden logo's over time and the last ones were made in the 1960's but other than that I don't think there is a way to date a Woden

Picked up a pretty old Athol No. 94 today (predecessor to the 615 1/2 as I understand it). It's got 5.5" jaws and sure feels like it weighs 100+lbs. The fact that it says AM Co tells me it's pre-1920 based on what I've seen posted in various places.

Other than what look like a couple of bites from a hacksaw on the slide and a bit of a bend in the handle it's in pretty decent condition. The seller said it sat in the back corner of their shop for 20 years and was in his father's garage for at least 20 years before that, but never mounted on a bench. It definitely had at least 40 years of dirt and dust built up on it!
