As a once upon a time theater technical person I noticed a similarity between their "tool boxes" and the work boxes that touring theatrical productions use, in that they are completely self-contained. Although there are obviously tool and hardware stores everywhere they go, there is no time for that during "the show". Everything they need has to roll out of the semi at the beginning, and roll back in at the end, going to the next "show". Therefore the office supplies, personal items, etc.

I was surprised to see the dewalt 18v nicads.

me too at first, but every business has to have a budget. i can't imagine that any of those would be used in a race, so having the latest and greatest probably isn't worth it.

I remember years ago my uncle gave me a racing video and in it they toured a race hauler and the thing that stuck out to me was they have smaller tool boxes labeled for different areas or parts of the race car and each one contained the needed parts and tools to do the job on the box.

It’s worth noting that all of the wrenches and sockets were SAE, with not a single metric tool in sight!

B&D acquired Dewalt in 1960.
Stanley and B&D merged in 2010.

Mac was acquired in 1980.

Proto was acquired in 1984.

WOW, this is a lot to swallow.I purchased a set of of Stanley sockets 1/4 drive at Walmart for my own use for a very low price with a lifetime warranty. Black etched 6 point. So Stanley sells Mac, and Mac has the truck.What a great bit of information.Does Mac sell other brands on there truck? IR, ,Gearwrench?

Saw a video of two guys doing a Nascar engine build.

They used speeder wrenches for everything. The only time they even touched a torque wrench was for the bearing caps!

I thought the wrench storage was very interesting: several of the same size stacked like spoons in your kitchen drawer, with the big ones located in the drawer with pins at both ends.

I'm big on redundancy--when I was in high school in the late '80s, I had a friend who's dad raced NASCAR in the '60s... privateer, and he had three Fords on the track at the same time in '63. He told me "Have two of every tool--while you're working on one side of the car, your friend can be working on the other side, and you don't have to wait for him to get done with the tool."

BOY did I take that to heart!
I've had friends over and we just PLOW through the tools while working on stuff.
And for my road/junkyard/race box, I've got two of everything too. It's still portable (barely), but it comes in really handy.

I liked the organization of spray cans, adhesives, tape, and hardware. I'll be able to use that info once I start racing my drag car next year.

Now I'm thinking about mounting a vise on my open trailer's deck... just in case.

Yes, Mac is part of Stanley, but you'd think they would have some Stanley tools in there, at least for show!

Thanks so much for sharing. I love this idea. Many times you need two of the same size wrenches, but they're spread out on two different wrench racks or something. This is a big space saver.

Interesting to see but nothing that really surprised me either. Having multiples of tools makes sense. One group rebuilding the diff's need the same tools as a team doing front suspension so makes sense there.

I do like the wrench storage though! I just don't have multiples of the same sizes in the same lengths (ie stubby vs regular size)

From my limited exposure to regional and small scale national racing, I would guess that what is shown in the pictures is only the travel rig. These probably stay in the haulers except for being inventoried for completeness. The shop would have it's own set of tools.

And speaking of that, I've been in one local race shop where the wrench multiples aren't in the tool box, they are all hung on pegboard, with six to eight of everything. It certainly conveys the idea that tool availability is not a bottleneck.
