Need Recommendation for Veneer on Shelves

So i just built these shelves for my basement for storage but i am looking for a way to finish off the edges. They are exactly 4" high and whatever i put on there will be painted white. I cant find any 4" veneer strips that i can just purchase and glue on so does anyone have any recommendations?

Rent a sheetmetal brake and buy a roll of aluminum trim stock. Bend to fit, cuts with a sharp utility knife. Fast and easy and reasonably cheap.

lolol i just bought a tennsmith finger brake so this is a very viable solution. I will have to look at some aluminum strips.

Google "veneer" and find selections of wide dimension sheets or rolls which can be ripped to your dimensions and glued on. Might be a little expensive, though. Could also use plastic laminate backing sheets which are used on the bottom surface of laminate furniture tops to prevent warping. They are matte brown, come in 4x8 sizes and can be painted.

Also think about a product called cabinet liner which is a thinner plastic laminate used on the interior surfaces of laminate cabinets. They are white or off white but not paintable.

Backing sheets or cabinet liner may not be available at at big box stores but can be purchased from building supply outfits handling plastic laminate.

i was trying to avoid having to rip a 4x8 sheet of formica or something but i might have to.

If you're just going to paint whatever is there, why not just use filler?

What you have there is construction 2 x 4's with plywood on top, so if you apply veneer or aluminum flashing the plywood/2x4 joint will eventually print through. Applying veneer, flashing or laminate will be a lot more work than building the shelves. Since we are talking rough carpentry here, why not seal the plywood edges, putty the joints smooth, paint, declare victory and move on?

ive pretty much decided to do this. Im going to sand the 2x4 smooth, with the plywood and fill all the gaps and screw holes and just paint. Do you have a rec for some wood filler?

you could just nail on a face frame of 1x6 ripped to the proper width, would look nice but overkill and honestly I would just use some wood putty and paint them. the other thing you could do is use pine screen mould and brad nail that on just the plywood edge. paint it and it will have a decorative look...

Bondo. I think the best choice when painting wood. Fills gaps large and small, doesn't shrink as much as other fillers and is just more durable.

I agree with DalyArcher, use Bondo for this application. Just obey the Bondo rule: don't build it up over 1/8" or it will chip easily. Round the edges. Also, do not use latex on the shelves, it never really cures. Use enamel or something like the Sherwyn Williams cabinet paint.

They offer larger sizes via custom work. It might be worth contacting them. This stuff is easy to use. Just iron it on. It's thick enough to avoid any defects in the 2x4s from "printing" through.

This stuff is is very durable, and a lot less than Bondo- no mixing, longer working time, and a little easier to sand.

Just sink in any fasteners and fill with wood putty or spackling compound. Sand the boards smooth to take away the rough finish and paint. Much cheaper then using a veneer.
