Any educated guesses on this vise? All I know, is it's a Reed. No info on size or model #. I'm second in line to look at it tomorrow, so chances are it will be gone, but I'm definitely curious. Thanks for any info.

Looks like its made in the same Chinese factory that makes Craftsman vises. I wouldn't pay more than $30 for it.

I didn't realize Reed was still branding vises. This one is Chinese junk. Don't confuse the name with vintage American Reed.

I should add one thing - it's possible the seller posted the wrong picture. If that's the case, you will know instantly. A Reed vise is something you won't forget.

Thanks for the response. When I first saw it, I thought Craftsman as mentioned above. That's when I asked seller and she said Reed Made in Erie. I'll just have to wait and see if it's still available tomorrow.

6P: it's probably not US made like has been said, but for the price the guy is asking it's a decent deal for sure so if you do happen to get a call and you need a vise i'd buy it. then if you find another older US REED made in the USA you'll know the difference, buy it and then sell the one you have been using probably for what you paid for it.

good luck

That pic gets blurry when I try to enlarge it...a chance that may be an older USA Columbuan D series just white labeled for reed... If so many agree those are some of the better utility vises ever made.

That's what I thought too, looks like a stamped slide Columbian. And they did make them in the states so it could be us made. Ugly vises but they are tough.

Op if you can get numbers off it that will help.

It's either an older US Columbian or the modern Chinese Wilton version of the same vise. Reed rebadges Wilton and columbian. And Wilton owns columbian.

True. It's hard to see from the pic, but if the base has a smooth slope at the mounting ears it is likely a US Columbian. So maybe worth upwards of $50 :dunno:

Looks similar to the US made Columbian/Craftsman vises of the 80's and early 90's. But it could easily be a Columbian/Reed of the same period or slightly earlier.

If the lettering saying USA is cast or stamped in, then definitely worth the asking price.
If the lettering is a sticker or it doesn't say "MADE IN USA" then pass. It could be an imported version.

I have lived in Erie, PA the last half-century or so and have seen many tons of Reed vices laying around over the years, and I would say that the vice in the photo is one that was recently manufactured for sure, probably in the last twenty years. Old Reed vices have their own look, a lot more rounded off corners than the vice in question. Holland was another brand of vices made and sold in Erie, PA back in the day too.

Update: I was second in line to take a look. Apparently the first guy bought it, so I never got to see exactly what it was.
