Wilton 745 from a garage sale this past weekend. If not for the price, I would have passed. I'll flip this one once I figure out what it's worth. Paid $20.

This next one I got from my father, he fooled around with clocks and watches and most likely bought it from some other retiring watch guy. It's delicate, but made to work with the guard over the screw and and chip deflectors on the jaws to protect the handle hub and the screw.

The three little dimple are used by the workman to support the non business end of a bow drill so I'm told. At the bottom of the pic you can see a partial logo, I meant to get a full shot of it but it slipped past me. Anyway it looks like a ship steering wheel.

I'd love it if any one had more info this one also, as I just shared all I know.

I've checked my 3 Record catalogues and none are mentioned. Looking through the B&H catalogues all the pre WW2 catalogues have Disston saw vices and the post war catalogues don't mention the manufacturer, they do look the same but I'm thinking it's a very generic design.

PG162 of the 1953 B&H catalogue gives an example of the no name one.

Thanks Cwazy. Looks like that one. It shall arrive in the mail in a few days. :D:

No probs, shame I couldn't find one labelled as a Record.

1913 catalogue entry doesn't really say much
Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 14.12.42.jpg
It's also in the 1923 and 1930 catalog (Buck and Hickman) with the same picture but at twice the price.

EDIT: Looking at the picture perhaps the brand is 'Queen & Snell'

Does anyone know anything about my American Scale Vice #77? I have found info on smaller ones from ASC but nothing on the #77.

Here is another clamp on vise, but there is nothing wimpy about it. No name, just the number on the side.

The jaws are self opening via a leaf type spring much like a big blacksmith's post vise. Anyone seen another like it?
Jim
I have one like it but missing the clamp screw. I bought mine at a car show in France and it travelled home aboard a boat at around 6 miles per hour. There's a photo here somewhere but I'll see about a new one.

Boatman: keep those pictures coming. all your vises look great and looks like CrazyWabbit(CW) found the catalogue page too. keep those gems pictures coming as you have time.

CW: WELL DONE and thanks for the catalogue page and have no idea how you found it so quick. do you own one too?

RedDog: American scale went out business in 1962 and their vise inventory is listed on post #91 of the vise repair 101 thread and here's the link.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830&page=159

i didn't see your #77 listed on the list, but guessing it's a 4 or 4.5 inch wide jaw and most likely has a swivel base. can you post up some pictures and maybe a few other members that own one might have something to add?

Sandman: thanks for the German contingent and i wish your pictures would get bigger so if you know a way to enlarge them that would be great because I (we) love looking at your STUFF.

Riley: those cleaned up get a fair amount because they are a Wilton, but not quite as nice or pricey as their bullet line of vises.

BB: any luck yet? i'm guessing what you are looking at also has close relatives in the Chain Gang too. good luck and LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS.

DIF: I don't own one, just remembered seeing it in one of the catalogues a while back. It caught my eye as it's unusual in that it swivels.
Having all the vice pages of the catalogues as PDF's makes it really quick and easy to look through them and grab a picture of the relevant page :)

Sandman is right, that #60 is the jaw width. Thanks.
And CwazyWabbit that catalog shot is it. Thanks for that. Was there any description or text associated with it?

Unfortunately there was no description associated with the picture, just the price which you see at the bottom.
The link in my signature will allow you to download the pdf's of the vice pages from the catalogues I own, I could only find the vice in the 1913, 1923 and 1930 Buck and Hickman catalogues.
Buck and Hickman often badged tools made by others and I suspect the small writing written in an arc on that picture is actually the producers names.

Another spur of the moment buy. 4" for $25. Had it in the car less than an hour from posting. I don't know how it was still there as there was an estate sale just 3 weeks ago. I bought it from the new house buyer. The jaw pin is missing so the previous user added a spot of weld to secure the swivel jaw. The swivel base lock works well. No name or ID anywhere. Now I need to quit working so that I have time to clean up a few of my vises.

Craptain: if it had a name on the side it would look like my Prentiss 19.5. you certainly didn't pay too much if the weld can be removed and the swivel jaw works ok. with a soft pair of jaw covers made out of copper, aluminum or lead that vise will grip anything just fine. WELL DONE SIR!!

it's hard to tell if you have removable jaws so if not maybe it's not a Prentiss, but sure looks like one. can you clean up the sides of the jaws when you have some time and take a few more pics to post? thanks

I was thinking Prentiss after the last one I bought a few months ago. Same vise but smaller.

Very similar Craptain but mine is much smaller (never thought is say that) I'd have to measure but I'd say around 6".
Jim
Yes. I didn't notice the size of yours. I went back and noticed the coin for scale.
I believe Craptain's is meant for attaching to the bumper/step of a covered wagon

It came from Europe but still possible. I can imagine it belonging to a tinker on the back of a gipsy caravan. LOL

Not really, but it would make a good story.

Still waiting probably this weekend before he gets back in the town where the vise is at. He still wants me to make an offer on a vise I haven't even seen yet. Lots of Benjamin's so I want to see it personally first. He is trying to squeeze every penny from it by having a bidding war on a vise none of the bidders have actually seen.

I also missed out on some vises a bit closer to home, they popped up on Craigslist yesterday afternoon and were bought immediately.

I have been thinking about getting the Craigslist Pro App to let me know when stuff pops up but I am afraid it would feed my tool and car addictions even worse LOL.

So I finally had some time to move some of these bigguns around and dig out this gem. Mr. Kevin Scott had posted the same one a few days ago. I forgot I cleaned this up a bit some time ago. I didn't actually strip it down yet, I just freed everything up and got it fully functional. I forgot how smooth this vise is. Movement is almost instant when turning the handle. Its huge too, 7 inch jaws, gotta be at least 250 pounds. And yes Kevin, its definitely a Yost.

Hello thought I would show you my biggest vise. It was made by Bofors (Swedish arms manufacturing company) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors
It feels very sturdy and heavy, nice training to carry it around :D. Have no garage yet. Need to make a new handle.

VERK: many of us didn't have a garage for a while and i'm still waiting to move to buy or build my DREAM GARAGE. that said it will happen for you if you keep working toward that goal. NICE LOOKING OLD SWEDISH VICE that is for certain and i wouldn't change the handle and maybe even leave the little bend in it that might actually make it easier to use. or just use a friend's press to straighten it out because ORIGINAL is only ORIGINAL ONCE.

MEATSIS: thanks for getting your exercise and showing me (us) that a Yost 78.5 looks almost identical to a Prentiss #23.

BB: sounds like a process and since the vise is somewhat rare you just have to deal with the person that owns it and i'm sure you've dealt with tougher sellers and came out ok so wishing you some luck and let your skills help you as i know they will.

So how many of you guys have dollies just for your vises?

I got tired of dragging around. It'll be mounted on a fixed stand bolted to the slab in the near future.

8" Columbian.

Cbacres I think I have the same little table saw that you have on the floor next to you dolly vise. Mine is all together and runs great.

I did... Until this ridiculousness showed up! Guess i need another dolly.

Sweet 8 inch Columbian BTW.

CB,
I saw a 6" Columbian in person and it was something to see. I would really like to see an 8" in person. Nice vise.

Scooter,
I guess that warning sticker means that there is a pretty good chance that the arbor press is going to win in a test of strength.

Jim, that's a CM scroll saw I bought, was going to mount and add motor but I found a complete unit ready to go. I just need to list the one on the floor for sale.

That's a massive arbor, beats out the 8".

It's huge, and with a weight to match. I grew up using one in my dads shop, can't wait to get it mounted. Only been lurking under my bench for 6 years.

Andrew, after looking at my Prentise (19-1/2) the pin for the swivel matches a Parker that I have as the swivel pin on the Prentise has a lever. It seems I just seen pictures of a Parker like yours.
Sorry for no pictures ,forgot phone and storming here.

Really? I've had 8 inch columbians and was never impressed by the weight of them. Those are the only 8 inch vises I can pick up and carry across the shop without killing myself. I would never attempt that with any of the other brands like the Reeds or Athols. Aren't the jaw towers hollow on the columbians? I know they were on mine, but mine were newer than the one you posted. Wasn't there someone here who filled theirs with lead?

Meatsis, I don't know, never looked to see if hollow, but I've heard that is so.

Guess if I really had to, I could pick up to get on a bench, but I've made it this far in life with my back in one piece I'll just get help doing so.

I agree about the other brands being heavier, I have a 4" Parker that seems heavier than one of the 4" Columbians I have.
