MAJESTIC VISE
To be added to my Depression Style Homeowner's Vise sub-collection. I got this on the second day of an estate sale for $11 in the hope that, since it was made in Chicago and the name started with an M, that it might be a Morgan. It was tough finding information but finally I found this 1953 catalog page. It's a little blurry but it shows a Majestic at the top of a column of Morgans. I'm gonna say its a Morgan.

Probably 30-40 years old. I had one for a long time on a post stand and used it for my "ground clamp" for small parts I was welding.

They came with both flat plate and pipe jaws. Entry level Homeowners vise, and I believe most if not all were imported., probably from Japan or Taiwan

I'm just looking for some information on the reypo Corp vise bases. I'm just curious how much harder they are to find compared to the regular wilton power arm and how long they were produced. Also they look much more heavy duty to me being made from cast iron and the chrome plated handle. The only information I've seen on them is one eBay listing and one source on Google which was in the forum of a 1947 popular mechanics magazine. I've read a lot of pages of this thread and I don't believe I've seen another. The eBay listing isn't mine just posting for reference.

CRS, It may be, but I'd doubt it as catalogs back the (as with phone books) simply posted mfg's alphabetically. (Hence the liking for "Acme" and AA or "AAA"; get in front of the competition...)

Why don't you give Mike a call and buy this one - he lives in Heath also. I have one just like it that I bought from Mike a couple of years ago.

You'll like Mike - he posts here regularly as Mike Paxton. BTW, tell him that I recommended him to you.

Sandman: i bet you got that deal because you looked at that 1000 pounds of iron and said i can move it in 5 minutes and the seller jumped on your offer. nice trinkets in the picture scattered about too. WELL DONE SIR!!

Royce: i'm surprised nobody has commented on your stand, but maybe they don't know that the base was a tank you found scrapped last week that you cut up and welded that stand together in your shop this week. here's the link to your thread for those members that might want to see how you did that stand and that Parker is a beast and great looking vise sitting on top of it.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=335871

i was just asking another member how he was planning on putting 100 year old patina on his new handle for his blacksmith vise and the patina you put on that stand's base is maybe a perfect match. do tell?

Nice looking forge in the picture, can you tell us a little about it?

Also, looks like a nice set of bench legs too!

Here's the first end of that handle

Heated up with oxy acetylene and a large welding tip, and peened to fit. Same basic way a lot of the vise factories did it

Drives,
I etched it with white vinegar, then rusted it with salt and hydrogen peroxide.

Well here's something I've been looking forward to for a long time. My 7 1/4" peter wright post vise is finally finished. When I got it someone had torched a 1" hole out of the jaws. Welded that up, wire wheeled everything, and coated it with my pine tar and linseed oil blend. I just have a little torch work to make the new metal match the old, sitting it on my scale to see what it weighs, and of course building a stand for it. I have something pretty special in mind for that, and that combination should be pretty much the ultimate hard use vise.

Very nice vise Vintage, looks like you made a handle. 150# vise connected to a bench and sitting on a support is plenty strong. Great job.
Yeah, the handle is another part of the project. I believe IHmachinery has some more pictures of the process that I wasn't able to take with a torch in one hand and a hammer in the other.

As for it's mounting, the vise and planned stand together should probably weigh somewhere around 700 pounds, and that's not going anywhere

Sandman scores again! The one downside of looking at everybody else's fantastic deals is that now everything that used to look like a pretty good deal looks way overpriced so we can't bring ourselves to buy anything at all! ;)

Speaking of overpriced, look at this 5 inch Prentiss on C/L asking $700
I've never seen a repair like this one.

V-nut, awesome job on that big *** vise. Never wanted one of those leg vises.....until now!
I had always wanted one, and three came along at a price I couldn't refuse. This one, a 4" Colombian (with slots for pipe jaws) I gave my dad, and a really beautiful 4" one with factory serrated jaws that I haven't torn into yet. Probably the most ornate post vise I've seen.

If anyone is wondering, that price started and ended with 0

Per drivesitfar's request here is a pic of a vise stand and a parker 674-1/2
It's a little odd, but turned out good to my eye.

Royse - Another excellent project with the vise stand, which is no surprise to anyone that has followed your projects.

The early ones at least are USA made, says so right on the vise.

I have a NOS one in the box and it doesn't say where it was made. Good thing the vise does!

Another little project from today, not technically a vise but I figure it's close enough. Old American Scale 1.5x5 screw jack. I had freed it up a while ago, and today I bead blasted it and simply wiped it down with ATF. Nothing fancy, but it's getting put to work.

Good job seeking out the big ones Sandman. If you can block out the voices maybe you could leave a few out there for the rest of us hopefuls... :) Lacking really big vises to choose from I settled on a couple of mid size vises yesterday at a local swap meet. The Athol 424 cleaned up a little bit after this pic and is in pretty good shape. Not much info on a 424 that I can find, Has a 92 on the other side. The Emmert No. 4 machinist vise looks like it will clean up pretty well also but not nearly as easily as a normal bench vise. This is the second one in three years I've found at this swap meet.

Also this cute little post vise and his big brother were at the same show last week. Couldn't leave the little guy there all alone. No name on it. The Vanderman No 3 was the first one I had seen locally, now I need to find a place for it too. Ed.

meatsis:
Seems to me that the tail end of that vise is now a piece of U channel set sideways I assume to fit better. I have never seen a Prentiss with an opening to the side instead of at the bottom.
Was that the way they did it in the really old days?

Shift, a couple of Vice companies made a slide like that. I'm not sure about Prentiss, but without more detailed pics, or an in-person viewing, hard to make that call.

Are you familiar with that particular Prentiss model?

Shift: I'd guess that is original, but not certain. that is a beast of a combination vise and not common so maybe price might not be terribly high. i wouldn't pay that much for it, but maybe because i like Rock Island and Reed more so trying still trying to get down a bit of inventory. i'm still looking everyday though just in case an interesting one shows up.

ORC: SPEAKING OF INTERESTING. any of those might have found a way into my shop if i would have seen them first. i have a Vanderman #1 so i know how big that #3 is and it ain't no little thing. that little blacksmith vise on top is pretty cute. of course i'd love to have one of those Emmert #4 vises that wasn't all buggered up or welded and yours looks pretty nice under that surface rust. i'm going to put that Steam Up weekend on my list for next year so i can meet a few of you guys down there and see some of that cool stuff that is and isn't for sale.

VN: I know you worked very hard getting that Huge Blacksmith vise together and if you didn't have plans for it i'm sure we'd find something to trade you. the 700 pound stand sounds AWESOME.

BB: so how many old vises do you own that are NOS in the box?

Here is a close up of the logo. I can't be sure of that worn out model number. None of the Prentiss vises pictured on Dayid's page have a slide like this one. Just like drives I am not buying lots of vises, but am on the lookout for the highly unusual as long as the price is not sky high. Outlaw raises an interesting point about the possibility of originality.
This vise might be on the market for a while, so I just might have to make the hour long drive to look it over in person.

If anybody wants more pics or wants to go out and buy it, here is a link to the Craigslist ad.

That's really sweet, love to come across one of those. Wonder if it was meant to be used as a hand vise?

Why do us guys like vises anyway?!!? Its just a lump of steel nothing more. Not a whole lot of technology in them. Why the heck do we enjoy these things? Ive got 7 vises and barely use 1 of them! LOL
