big vise you just finished vintage nut. To be sure I tried it out by my big 8" post vise and it looks pretty good there as well.

It could have been a hand vise econotrk and it works quite well as one. Most true hand vises I've seen were smaller yet and had a handle on them though. Might have just been a good project for an apprenticing blacksmith? It's pretty cool though and fairly useful also. Ed.

ORC: SPEAKING OF INTERESTING. any of those might have found a way into my shop if i would have seen them first. i have a Vanderman #1 so i know how big that #3 is and it ain't no little thing. that little blacksmith vise on top is pretty cute. of course i'd love to have one of those Emmert #4 vises that wasn't all buggered up or welded and yours looks pretty nice under that surface rust. i'm going to put that Steam Up weekend on my list for next year so i can meet a few of you guys down there and see some of that cool stuff that is and isn't for sale.


You should plan on making it to Steam up next year if you can Drives, along with anyone else who loves a good old fashioned mechanical show. No shortage of things to see or do there. Also a very good swap meet to scour through. I'm not sure how many vises I looked at this year at Steam up but it was a lot. Of the four I ended up buying probably the Athol is the least "interesting" if only because it is a standard pattern bench vise. The Emmert will clean up well I believe and seems structurally sound and they aren't that easy to find. The Vanderman was unique enough that I couldn't pass it by either. The little post vise was just as impossible to leave without and in some ways is my favorite Decent bargains to be had as well, all four of these vises together did not get me to the $600 mark. Ed.

Seems to me that the tail end of that vise is now a piece of U channel set sideways I assume to fit better. I have never seen a Prentiss with an opening to the side instead of at the bottom.
Was that the way they did it in the really old days?

I have one or two small ones similar to that mini post vise. I think one is like that and one may be a clamp on. (Now where did I put them...)

LOL, yeah I haven't been around much lately guys, sorry. Life has been pretty crazy unfortunately. But things are starting to calm down again, and I'm starting to spend more time in the shop and tool hunting =)

I think $750 was the final bid, it was worth that much in my opinion but I couldn't afford it.

Well here's something I've been looking forward to for a long time. My 7 1/4" peter wright post vise is finally finished. When I got it someone had torched a 1" hole out of the jaws. Welded that up, wire wheeled everything, and coated it with my pine tar and linseed oil blend. I just have a little torch work to make the new metal match the old, sitting it on my scale to see what it weighs, and of course building a stand for it. I have something pretty special in mind for that, and that combination should be pretty much the ultimate hard use vise.

Amazing restoration job you did, love it! I recently picked up a 7" Post vise, pretty similar to your's, but it's covered in a good layer of dust and will need some work bringing her back to life. So many projects, so little time. lol

The Harley wasn't phased by the Reed 105R, despite the 30 pound Harley tour pack weight limit. Though it did rupture a Monster drink on a gravel road back to a swimming hole. Swam in both lake Erie and lake Arthur on the way home.

Enough of that. The cost vise. Paid $120 keeper price as i wanted one.

Slightly odd and hard for me to date. It has the long shaped main screw end, but has the oil holes, later model horizontal lettering, and later, split nut retainer. EXACTLY like my craftsman 5180 3 1/2 inch).


DEMOMAN, this also does not have the "chin piece" as you called it, just like my craftsman but dissimilar to my 106

Also, threw in a Plomb ratchet i picked Sat that i really like

CW: is that a quick release that is missing it's lever? i'm guessing a Parkinson is what the writing says and i like the lines so hopefully it will clean up and work nicely once it gets in your hands.

Filson: did you post pictures of your big blacksmith vise or is it the cool one that is attached to a table that looks like the shape of the state of Washington. Welcome back and hope the dry side of the mountain is treating you ok.

ORC: good luck with the Emmert and yes the Steam up in Salem is on the list for next year and since it runs for two weekends maybe i can talk my bride into spending the week out on the Coast to watch a few waves. nice finds and even the Athol is a good vise so WELL DONE.

Yep it's missing the lever but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the wrong slide, seems strange to make the body of bronze but the slide cast iron. I may be able to fit the lever from a broken Parkinsons that I have.

I just finished restoring an 80's model Wilton 450 Machinist vise that I got at a very fair price. Had substantial rust and needed electrolysis, but cleaned up pretty well. It's been good weather to play in the garage....

Tim: i know your market and money is a bit different than ours, but you know i've said i'm slowing down on buying vises and i'd drive a couple hours for that deal. the age of the vise, the odd shaped slide and the bench is worth the $40 so looks like a great deal to me. plus you can show us what that vise is and i'm guessing pre 1930's USA made, but not certain of maker.

Tim: that tool box would look great painted a different color if you can make a deal on it too. not sure if you have a trailer rental place like UHaul, but if my trailer was full or i needed a little bigger one i'd rent one of theirs for $20 to $40 a day. good luck

Jaws show very little signs of wear.. Other than needing a good clean, the vise is in great shape. The handle is even hanging on the wall.
