Shop Electrical dilemma

My shop is 220 ft from my pole for my 200amp service to my house. My original idea was to have the electric company put a second 200amp meter on the pole and run that to shop underground. They dont put 2 meters on a single pole anymore. I have a 200amp panel outside that runs underground into the house into anther panel.

Can I add a 100amp breaker to my panel outside and run 100amp to shop underground being 220 feet away if I use big enough gauge wire?

Well, you could try several different senarios to get power to your barn:

Change service on pole to a 320/400 amp (1 Meter) with 2-200 amp disconnects, feed the house with one, the barn with the other.
(This would open new questions, 200 amp load at 220' would require 350MCM aluminum to feed your barn) $$

Will the power co run new wires overhead and set a pole/xfmer and meter at your barn?

Now back to your question, 100 amps underground to your barn @ 220' would require 2/0 aluminum, that full 100 amp load is right at the borderline length, 225' would be 3/0 aluminum, so is your guesstimate on the length pretty close?

Going to 400 amp service will run $4k plus so it's out of the question right now. I'm going to remeasure it but going off memory it's 225 ft from pole to shop. Was quoted over $2k for wire and pipe to run that far with me doing the labor.

YES !

DO you REALLY need 100A ?

First, if you limit the added breaker in your main panel to 90A you can use aluminum wire, which is MUCH less expensive than copper.

Second, most "single man" garages/shops can easily get buy with 60A service, even with a heat pump/AC.

Its just a 24x40 metal building thats sprayed foamed that I plan on air conditioning. The major amp users are:

2 post lift (220v)
TIG Welder (220v)
Air Compressor (220v)
Mini Split AC (220v)
Lathe (110v)

Its mostly for just me and for when my boys get older but occasionally one of my brothers is over doing something.
