Horizontal Tool Storage & Who Make a Good Mid Chest?

Soooo, as I've gotten older, bending down to get stuff out of the bottom drawers of my stack is becoming (literally) a pain. I'm thinking of ditching my '90's vintage 26" C'man stack for a wider box that I can put on a bench. I currently have enough bench room for up to 60" length.

Looking around I cant seem to find any wide (56"?) mid chests for this purpose. I really dont want or need a top chest that opens, I'd rather use the top as a storage shelf.

I thought about using a roller cabinet and removing the casters, but due to height that would require me to build a custom bench to hold it.

Anyway, anyone know of a really good quality chest that would fit my needs?

How about a Kennedy?

I don't know anything about it but, it seems pretty rugged.

Here's another option that maybe a little on the crazy side. Get a good sized used craftsman top box or a freight damaged unit with a dented lid & cut the lid off. The top till becomes a storage shelf :dunno:

Thanks Fed, but that chest is not wide enough, I'd be looking at at least a 40" but really a 56" would be ideal. Also, (should have mentioned this earlier), would need a 4" deep drawer for socket storage...

You might consider the US General 56" top box from Harbor Freight and just take the top cover off. It would have a nice top shelf that way. Also has the deep drawer. Great quality for the money.

^^^you know, I'll check that out, thanks for the suggestion. However, full disclosure, I've looked at those in the past and was not very impressed with the quality. The drawers had a ton of side to side movement. But I'll check them out again when I go by the store...

I was weary about the HF box at first as well. Once I got it home and loaded the drawers with tools, they performed much better than the empty floor model.
