Affordable Garage Cabinets, Is There Such A Thing?

Can anyone recommend some reasonably priced cabinet systems for the garage?

So far I've found these online to be somewhat reasonable priced (all things considered) but am curious as to what other options you all may be using or have experience with.

I know most everything out there will be thin metal without much rigidity which is fine as long as it doesn't fall apart during usage. I'd like to keep the cost under $2000 for a garage cabinet set to store detailing stuff and other garage items that normally go on shelves.

Normally I'd be up for making my own set but I don't feel like making them plus making my own would take up more room then the metal/aluminum cabinet systems out there which are so much thinner (I want to conserve as much floor/wall space as possible) so that all the vehicles fit inside the garage.

Any assistance is appreciated!

I love my newage, I think they are very good value for your money.

I wouldn't spend more on higher end cabinets if I was to do it again

Not seeing the OP's link but these metal cabinets at Lowes for a 28" x28" x 12" deep would be hard to beat for $120.00 ...

Check out Saber cabinets they are cheaper than new age but quality steel units. There worth checking out if you want a metal cabinet for the best price possible.

I picked up older Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets off of Craigslist where the guy was doing a flip. They need new hinges, a scuff and paint, but they're in pretty good shape.

I bought these from HomeDepot. I paid around $1500 on sale, normal cost was $2500 (now at $2000). The unit is 234" long and is available in black, red and blue.

In the garage of my home, we reused the kitchen cabinets from a kitchen remodel. They are very good cabinets, the cook just did not care for the cabinets the builder installed.

In my workshop, we chose Home Depot "better" grade Mills Pride cabinets (since discontinued) and they are working well.

If I were to choose cabinets for another garage/shop I would look at Craig's List, Habitat for Humanity's Re Store, or a discount cabinet supplier.

Take a look at the Xtreme Garage cabinets from Menards if you have one in your area.
Affordable, and they look nice after you cover the exposed screws.

If you choose Gladiator, I've found the best prices on the Sam's Club web site. If you're not a member there, Amazon prices are almost as good. I have some Gladiator cabinets and am about to purchase more. The steel is very thin, but good for the price point. My only complaint is that the finish on the doors is not at all chemical resistant.

If you have a local habitat for humanity resale store you can find cabinets in there all the time for 20-30 bucks, over a period of a month you can pick some similar ones up, paint them all the same color and boom. Cheap garage cabinets.

Most of my shop cabinets came from Hon, Steelcase and Knoll. Used office furniture of the right breed has beam reinforced shelves and you can get great prices if you're willing to hunt a bit. A $5 rattle can makes them all the same color.

I haven't looked lately, but these were $69 at our local Sams.

I've got there, the one by the man door holds pool supplies including granulated chlorine. The chlorine is reacting slowly with the stainless but it's holding up, no problems other than surface rust inside that specific cabinet in 4 years.

I bought plywood, some hardware and built my own...you can see the row up at the back. The advantage is you can build them to fit exactly the space you have without wasting an inch. I was able to deal with a bulkhead on the wall that made the cabinets on the right 4 inches deeper than on the left but I still have a perfectly even front. Plus the various widths that were necessary to fill in the space.

Before I got in on the Gladiator deal I had wood cabinets in my garage. There were a few places around that had thousands of cabinet doors for sale. The doors were factory defects. Hinge hole in the wrong place, or the grain was just right for higher end cabinets in a kitchen. I bought the doors for $5.00 each, prefinished.

I built my overheads using 1x12 pine shelving boards and 1x3 for the face frames. My base cabinets were built with 2x4's for the framework and 1x3's for the face frames.

When I changed my garage around and bought the Gladiator overhead cabinets, I gave all my upper and lowers to a so called friend and built a new bench. I sort of miss the wood cabinets. If I can find a pic I'll post it up. But all in all, I didn't have too much into the cabinets at all, and had a bunch of storage space.

I didn't find the pics of the cabinets I had in my garage, but I did find the pics of the cabinets I made the same way at the house garage, except I painted these.

We've got some great sale prices right now from NewAge Cabinets. For the month of July the new Pro Series 8 piece sets are on at 1999.99. Available in red or gray with bamboo or stainless steel worktop. The price is $500 off the set price.

Check out the new design software supplied by NewAge. While you're wandering around the web let me know what you think of our new website.

Thanks :rocker:

Just received my NewAge Pro cabinets this week. Really, really nice. Just wish my car would be finished so I could get them installed. BTW, I got the new color white with gray, and think they will really look great with my white walls. Good luck with your search.

I'm in the process of doing exactly this. Got 16' of upper cabinets for $45 from Re-store. The paint I bought costs more than the cabinets did!

Post pics when you get them installed.

Stay away from anything made with particle board ! It will swell from the moisture in the air. In a couple of years, the doors won't close properly. Before 10 years, they will be mush !

OSB and plywood are not much better UNLESS you have proper support backing large panels (remember, these were designed for 16" O.C. span), AND all the edges are well sealed with (preferably oil based) primer and enamel paint.

I just bought an entire set of newage performance plus cabinets. Haven't set them up yet but I did open and move them. Very heavy solid units. I'm happy with them. This is the only picture I have.... 87399c5b79266d82bf0b80a3bb4e8242.jpg

Craigslist regularly has free or cheap cabinets from remodels. All my overhead cabinets came from a yard sale 2 blocks from my shop. Paid around $100.

Many of my base cabinets are rollaway tool chests, bought on sale. Same with top chests, a mixture of mostly Craftsman and Kennedy, plus HF.

Nice looking cabinet. Still a little confused about the racing strip, not my taste I guess.

I looked at the pro series as well, but I really wanted blue cabinets. The racing stripe doesn't bother me. It'll be good to put my decals that come with my performance parts. God knows they arent going on my car. Can't believe the quality of these cabinets. Can't imagine how the pro would be better.

If you search there are state action sites that actions off state owned materials like http://wisconsinsurplus.com/
I have won full metal cabinets (built when they did not use the thinnest metal possible) for $15~$30 a 7ft tall x 3ft wide cabinets.

Agree with most suggestions, including checking craigslist. At the same time, I think $2000 would get you a very nice cabinet set, I spent way less than that buying these and I love them:

Depending on your climate, refurbed kitchen cabinets may not be the best deal. Mine are 10 years old. Those 10 years in a non heated or cooled detached garage has turned them into junk. The melemine ones that came with the garage didn't last 3 years before they turned to mush.

I almost bought the New Age Perf Plus line in Blue. But found a screaming deal on the Pro line set up exactly how I wanted them in Grey. I can live with a blue accent on the walls. Now I just have to wait for delivery.
