Just looking for some opinions. All things being equal, which is better a paramo no. 5 or a 4" wilton bullet vise? (Model number on the Wilton escapes me now)...I really like my wilton but damn that paramo is solid as hell. Which would you guys choose?

Depends on condition, use and version of the wilton. If it is the older style with smaller jaws, then the paramo. I'd agree with the comment that the paramo is better mounted without the swivel base. For the record I have both, 4" bullet and a No. 5, actually it's a Record. Two great COO's. The wilton is more of a machinist vise and the paramo a general use vise, although pretty tight.

I do have a Paramo albeit a no. 6 as well as a 4" bullet. The bullet is a pleasure to use like most are and I really like them. I love certain aspects of the Paramo also but there is one thing that bothers me about mine. It is the stupid swivel lock on the base. Not very positive and I always feel when getting the set screw tight enough to kind of hold it is near failure. I've considered taking the base off and just mounting it solid. Here is a pic showing the locking ring. Ed.

I also have a Paramo 6, have had no problems with the swivel, and always thought the drum brake design worked well...tighter than ****'s hatband with little force on the set screw... Guess I'm lucky. I have mine mounted a little differently than the one in the picture. I have the set screw in the front.. The vise is pushed back against the drum so that friction is against the back and not to the side

Travelling through VT on business and been finding stuff. First this athol 710 ratchet handle in a Re-Store for $30. No base but I have those at home. OT, I've been finding anvils. Here is a 60# Fisher ($160) and 100# ($250) Peter Wright.

Finished up a Will Burt Versa Vise it has the name cast into the vise, most I have seen are decals. It also has a number 18 on each jaw, I left them on thinking maybe 1918 or maybe just number 18 of that batch of vises they made that day. Not sure I like the color its called hammered rosemary and was hoping for a little darker shade. I am not great at getting that hammered effect to come out sometimes.

CA: you have skills sir. WELL DONE!!

WW: i'd probably keep the Wilton 4 inch and find a bigger Paramo maybe a 5 or 6 inch and have 2 vises in my shop/garage. if you have only room for one it really depends what you need it for, but either vise can do about 80-90% of any job in a normal garage. i've actually been in garages with very handy guys that had smaller vises and some had open screw vises so it's all in what you need them for. certainly i can live without a 6 inch Rock Island or a Reed 2c or a bigger Reed 4c, but since i own them then why not set them up to use.

cheers

A new vise to me but not this thread. Its a Wilton turret wood vise, first shown on here by Bluebolt, nifty little set up that gives versatility on the bench. A little rusty, but it's a USA vise and we all know it'll clean up just fine.

I just had to have it, thanks Bluebolt!

This will be mounted on my yet to be built wood top bench and will make vise # 5 that's going to be on it.

Hey cbacres, I think Wilton assembled that vise wrong, the main body is flipped I think, you can't turn the L handle all the way in some positions.

A while ago I acquired a rather tired Wilton 1760 Tradesman. I had always wanted to do a Wilton in Snap On red, so this became my chance.

It needed a lot of TLC, some Devcon, and other cosmetic repairs. The anvil area was pretty pockmarked, with one big defect that could be reduced but not eliminated. New jaws, new pipe jaws and some fabricated Snap On badging completed the job.

BTW that 1760 is pretty heavy.

Worked a bit more on my C1 tonight, I just have to wait for it to dry and it's ready to re-assemble. I will probably brush the Wilton logo black to make it stand out but that's it. I did not end up filling the holes in the side with epoxy. I may do it later on but I'm REALLY happy with the color and how it turned out. Went heavy on the paint, used an entire can and half a can of primer.

Nice job!

And it's done. I'm happy with how it turned out and would love to own a C3. I don't know if I like the Wilton design more or less than a Record no.6 or no.8 though!

IHmachinery: thanks!

Not sure if I messed up or not....was the first one at a garage sale, and they had this 8" American Scale. They're asking $350, which seem reasonable, but I don't really have an idea on what American Scale vises are going for. It's nearby, so I could go back.

No crack, damage or repairs, but the jaws were worn smooth (replaceable).

GMAN: AMERICAN SCALE VISES ARE GREAT VISES and you know how often you've seen 8 inchers come up. i have yet to see one in person so i would buy that one if that makes a difference. it looks like there is a third mounting hole up front and if so it's meant to be mounted as a non swiveler otherwise it's missing a swivel base, but i'm not familiar with that vise.

i'd make copper, brass or aluminum removable jaw covers for it and you won't have any issues holding what you want to hold.

you have my blessing to spend the cash if you have some to spare.

good luck

Bart, I'd be all over that. I have a 6" AS, I can't imagine the weight of an 8"!

Go back and make an offer! (But have the 350 with you)

I've had this vise for years... Prentiss # 56. 6" jaws...non-swivel. I had initially blasted it and gave it coat of paint... but plans never finished for another bench to support it... I've got to much stuff and need to liquidate some assets...

wondering what a good asking price would be for a local sale... not interested in shipping... pics attached

thanks
John

$150 maybe a little more. May take a bit to get it but you should.

Pricing with no shipping options means what are the local prices you see? What is the demand? that's a desirable vise generally, good brand, and model, non swiveling may drop its desirability generally but not too bad for one that size.

Any price suggestions here will reflect the responder's local pricing, which may not mean a thing in your area.

You need to watch CL for your area and see what the competition is asking for similar vises, including other brands of old American iron...

G-Man, that A.S. looks to be in good shape and the jaws can be re cross-hatched.---It has 3 mounting holes for stationary mounting but I'll bet there is a hole in the center for a swivel base.---Probably came like some Morgan's do, built for stationary but also accepts a swivel kit.

I'm with Drive and Outlaw, don't see many clean 8 inchers anymore and I've paid $350.00 for some 6 inchers.---Like Outlaw said, take the $350.00 just in case, cause it's worth it, but try hard not to pay that.

Good hunting

Messed up? Maybe... As other folks said, you hardly ever see an 8" vise in the wild and for sale. $350 is a reasonable price.

I don't know how, but the American Scale was still there when I went back at the end of the day! I posted some details on a thread about the A.S. vises, but figured folks in this thread would be interested. The jaws are definitely 8", they open up 16" or a touch more, the overall length was 30 1/2" from the front of the spindle to the back of the slide, and it weighed 237lbs on the bathroom scale. I can't tell if the model is a No. 58 or No. 68. It looks like a light strike 5 followed by a heavy strike 6. The 8 is a lighter strike, so I'm wondering if they made a mistake and grabbed the 5 by accident, and corrected it with a heavy 6 over the top? It has three bolt holes and a threaded hole in the center of the base for a swivel. There is some greenish/blue paint on the bottom of the base that could be a primer, or the original color. After looking it over closely, other than the jaw wear, it's in incredibly clean condition...no big dings/dents, no weld spatter, etc.

Here are some better pics....I love the first one!

Sure glad it was still there G-Man.---I hate to see a grown man cry of even hearing about one.---Very nice pull.---If you can find a swivel base, you can crank the weight up to about 260-265 lbs.

That vise looks pretty clean. If it as good as those few pictures looks I would be asking $400 and not take less than $300 in my area. Rarely see a 6 inch vise around here!

Bart, What is the OD on the base for a swivel base, and distance from the center of the center bolt, to the center of the hole for the swivel lock?

:rocker: Bart! Did you give the asking price since it was still there late?

I did...the CL ad said the garage sale was all weekend, and then I heard him talking to his wife about next weekend since there's no way they would sell everything (they had lots of stuff). I figured he wasn't going to budge if he had the rest of this weekend, and next weekend as well.

I lost out on a mint 100 year old anvil yesterday and didn't want to go 0 for 2 so soon :scared:

Measured across the side bolt down holes, the OD was right at 12". It's not a perfect circle, and is larger front to back. From the center of the center hole to the center of the swivel lock hole was 4.5".

Picked up this very nice Reed 104R this morning for $45. Jaws are like new and the handle has zero dings or pitting. Very smooth and excited to clean it up and put it to work.

G-Man, how big was the anvil you missed out on?

0 for 2, they would have had to have given you a sedative.:tantrum2: and then :willy_nil

Only about 140lbs, but it was a very uncommon Columbian meant for export to Europe, in the German pattern with two horns. My research indicates only a few stayed in the States. I wanted it to use, and the guy who got it is a flipper (nice guy though). It's on CL now with "make me an offer" as the price. :(

Went to pick up a vice I purchased about an hour from my house this morning heading towards Boston. Pick it up then went a half an hour south to do another pick. Picked up two more vices then spent 4 hours in traffic! Only good thing is I stopped at every antique store on the way home just bought a ton of ****.

I got this early 4.5" Prentiss swivel jaw w/ broken foot for $35. Then this gorgeous 4.5" Simplex for $25. While there I bought this 3.5" Bullet with brass jaws for $50 (12/52 date stamp). The bullet is really immaculate, the paint is horrible but trust me super clean.
