I know that Snap On warranties most of the tools, but I have never seen a list of the items that Snap On considers consumables vs. a warranty replacement item. Are files warrantied or are they consumables? What about the tips that come with the ratcheting screwdrivers etc.?

Anything I've brought off the truck has been replaceable. That may vary from driver to driver. Mine even replaces my radiator pick whenever I snap it lol

I would also say it depends on the dealer. I first had witnessed the best SO driver that I knew break customers worn out tools himself for warranty. He was also the only tool truck we had and we all spent lots and lots of money on his truck so he took care of us.

Each tool has a warranty code associated with it. Its not publically displayed though but shows up on the computer. Not many tools are considered consumable only things like drill bits and bolt extractors. More are rejected due to what they deem as "abuse" or from reaching the end life of the tool.

For example if they see a mushroomed screwdriver tip then it can be rejected. If its worn out or broken then its replaced. Similar case for sockets, worn out from use can get it rejected but if you put it in a vise or on an impact and crack the side wall then it gets replaced.

They don't audit everything that gets send in, probably random.

Our guy is pretty good on replacing things. He'll warranty drill bits 1/4" and up.

I know they warranty my taps/dies, extractors, punches, chisels those are what I would call consumable but they are 100% warrantied in my experience by past drivers and corp..

To Skin, I would think your much more likely to get a warranty rejected if you snapped the tip off a screw driver rather then wear it out and send it in which in my experience has always been taken care of almost every driver and esp by Corp...

Usually drill bits below 1/4 I believe are consumable with most brands

And at discretion of rep I have been denied a Cornwell wrench because it was bent under heavy use of an 8mm rep claimed abuse and will be denied

Unibits and impact bits wood handles of hammers come to mind

And lastly snap usually is pretty easy on warranty compared to the other tool trucks and companies out there

Quote from above link is useful,

Consumable Products are warranted, at the time of sale, only against defects in workmanship or materials that prevent their use. Consumable products are goods reasonably expected to be used up or damaged during use, including but not limited to drill bits, saw blades, grinding discs, sanding discs, knife blades, files, O2 sensors and batteries. This warranty only extends to the original Customer and cannot be transferred or assigned.

Our matco guy will warranty drill bits. I can't count how many small drill bits I've handed him.

My Snap-On guy will warranty everything.
My MAC man will warranty everything.
The Teng man will not warranty anything, hence the fact I have told him not to come back ever again.

You get what you pay for.

I have never been refused warranty on any tool from Snap-On or MAC ever. Even when I have admitted mistreating the tool, eg. using a screwdriver as a pry-bar etc. or a ratchet with a cheater bar on it. That is what I pay for though. The service which is lacking in the Teng van man. Warranty? You must be joking. In case anyone is thinking of buying Teng tools, don't. THEY ARE ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. REALLY, REALLY BAD.

Consumable products are ... including but not limited to ...

Yeah, that doesn't clarify things at all.

Most people would call taps and drill bits consumable. Yet many drivers warranty them.

I'd call files consumable, yet specific files are often covered by lifetime warranties.

Screwdriver insert bits are certainly consumables, and yet there are stories of these being replaced too.

What they all have in common, is that these are all parts, whose replacement value in goodwill far exceeds their cost. It makes good business sense to keep your customer happy.

If it's a tool that reasonably consumed during proper use. I won't warranty it-drill bits, cut-off wheel, abrasives, etc. If I deny a warranty, I had better have a good excuse for why.
