Simple questions I hope for you guys...

I am going to double layer the drywall and insulate the ceiling to reduce the noise transfer to the bedrooms above the garage. What do I do with the electrical boxes?

- Use a standard box and offset the box forward when I nail it in place.
- Use a standard box nailed to stud and use a "mud ring" to bring the face of the box flush with the drywall.
- purchase special boxes if availble

Thanks Guys

Yes:), any of those will work. They make boxes that have a screw adjustment on them. You get them close to where you want them and then use the adjusting screw to move them in and out. I like these boxes alot, for get who makes them maybe Carlon although they're not blue?

They also make a rear nail on box, the nails are toward the bottom of the box so you can move them pretty far out

what about a 4x4 box with a mudring to match the depth of the board? using the proper cable connectors should work, might be a little expensive though. but it does give you nice big boxes

is this the ceiling between the garage and living space? Make sure you maintain your fire rating with whatever you end up doing.

another thing you might want to consider to reduce noise transmission is to hang the drywall from resilient channel. The stuff is cheap, and greatly reduces noise transmission through the ceiling so the kids banging around upstairs wont bother you when yore trying to work in your garage.

Easiest,cheapest answer-
Use standard boxes, mounted as if doing single layer drywall. When plugging and plating, use Arlington Industries #BE-1(single gang),BE-2(2 gang),BE-3(3 gang),BE-4(4 gang) and BE-1R(4' round) box extenders-BE-1s are less than a buck each.
