Surfing craigslist and saw this vintage drill press for sale. Apparently it's all original and working. It's listed for $85, what do you think. I already have a 60s Craftsman 150, so this one would just be extra....lol.

I don't see what you would gain. It's very similar to your CM 150, and you still would not have slow speeds or a table lift. I'd pass.

Made by Atlas somewhere around 1938-1940 (4 handles and oval switch plate).
Looks complete (without the optional speed pulley). The price is excellent for a floor model (that would be a good price for a bench model as well).

If your 150 has a speed reducer for metal work, then this would be good as a second DP for woodworking. Otherwise, it doesn't offer any benefit paired with a similar DP.

On the other hand, at that price ...... A good cleaning and you should be able to quickly flip it for $125-$150 if it doesn't need rebuilding.

I paid $100 for the benchtop edition (heavy sucker, they really knew how to build them) so $85 for that, working condition, sounds ideal.

(Btw, does anyone know of a link on vintagemachinery or elsewhere for the manual, parts listing and how to disassemble, etc?)

Jakemac, yes my CM150 has a vari-slow system on it, although I hear it's still not enough for metal drilling. I feel like I need to rescue this DP, so I may just go for it tomorrow.

I served already. My garage and basement is full of project machines. If that was a Clausing, Delta 17, or Powermatic drill press I'd be all over it but there's little left on the bone on that ancient Atlas press. Bearings (spindle and motor), belt, cleaning, etc---many hrs of work and have very little resale value.

It's pretty cool, looks original and the price is right but I wouldn't buy it:

- It's too primitive for everyday use. (4 step "woodworking" pulley and lacks table elevation and possibly table tilt.)
- I would not want the restoration project nor allocate the floor space to something that's simply "on display".

I’d pay 85 for that no questions asked if i was looking for one, looks to be in good shape and don’t see anything missing at a glance (spindle cover is usually missing at least), table looks to be in decent shape too, can’t see spring return side. That said unless i was looking for a project or didn’t have a press i’d pass unless you’re not short on space.

You didn't post a model number, but this manual should have the same info as the DP in the OP.

There won't be much to go on, but something is better than nothing. :dunno:

Thanks Jake, that looks like the one to go with, if my photos here are anything to go by (which reminds me...I really need to pick up the pace on restoring this thing.)
