Insulating a non insulated attached garage.

I am moving into a new home soon, the house currently has r12 in the roof. None above the garage attic, and I am assuming none in the garage walls. 2 walls are shared to the home. I am not planning on heating or cooling the garage per say unless I used a space heater in winter for small things.

So my idea was to blow r50 cellulose into the house attic, and r30 in the garage attic, and whatever i can blow into the garage walls. Will I notice much difference? I am just trying to make the garage so it wont freeze in winter (fluids, and such) I live in ohio so it doesn't get too extreme but since it has 2 shared walls to house maybe would provide enough warmth to keep it a buffer zone.

Thoughts?

I have had 5 houses here in northern va with insulated garage walls, ceiling, and no heat. If I keep the garage door closed as much as possible my garages did not freeze.

I would overblow the garage attic to match the house while you have the opportunity as it will never be cheaper again.

I would wager that the 2 walls common with the garage are already insulated.

Definitely insulate the attic at least. You might drill a few small holes in the walls and see there is any insulation in them.

Heat rises so if you have no insulation above your garage then your heat is just rising right out of the garage. R12 in your house is terrible....especially in your climate.

House is 2400 square feet, energy monthly over last 12 months is 100 a month, and gas is 60 a month with R12. I figure it should drop a nice chunk, also has high effieincy furnace/ac but its working hard with so little insulation. I have no idea how much difference R12 to R50 will make in the attic of home but im excited to find out. I am just insulating garage because, well why not? lol.

Want to insulate garage attic+ do all the walls, because i'll have to fix the dry wall from the holes anyway. Do walls, then work on the garage floor, then put down whatever stuff I decide to do. Porceline tile looks amazing, but I dont have the skills to do it. So its either epoxy or racedeck. Kind of digging race deck.

I have 5 motorcycles and 1 car. I am leaning towards racedeck more and more. Cant wait to have a garage all done. (this is my first home) and these are my first projects.

It's worth it but you might consider just doing the attic above the garage at first and then live with it a bit before you make the final decision to do the walls. With enough insulation in the attic and by air sealing all wall penetrations and any other place for air to infiltrate, you might find it's good enough without doing the walls.

Just an FYI, you don't need to worry about fluids freezing that are not water based. Oils, solvents, oil based paint, etc are not going to freeze.

Since I have insulated my house and garage the garage always stays pretty warm. ie. I keep house 65, outside will be 0 or 20* and garage remains around 45-50* unheated. Quite content with this.

My last gas two gas bills have been 45 dollars for gas used, + 30 dollar delivery fee. kind of bogus. but 75 dollars per month total gas bill. My gas company has this chart showing usage compared to others in my area.

Amazing that this house being 3x bigger than my old 2 bedroom house is actually cheaper to heat in the winter than it was now that its insulated.

That's a big difference! Now you have to see how many months it takes to pay for the insulation cost. Just forgetting the chance of NOT freezing your **** off while working, and the added value to the house... well done! Do you have any tax relief for the extra insulation costs? In Italy we have 50-65% tax credit, depending on the quality of thermal insulation applied.
