Just picked up a Reed 314 vise at an estate sale. It's been well loved but in pretty nice shape still. $35 seemed pretty fair to me

Those will fit nicely in your new shop. Oh did I mention I love your new Shop you built. Great find G-man.

Thanks! I figure by the time I get the shop just the way I want it, I'll get the call that there's an opening in Montana I've been waiting for :D

I found these at a yard sale earlier 125 each on the larger ones Wilton C. Parker, and a Columbian. The Columbian and parker don't have replaceable jaws. I told him I may stop by later and make an offer. Is he way too high?

Well, I did it, you guys. I read all the pages. Quite a day. Royals win, Chiefs win. I do believe I've earned myself a whisky.

I ran across this 5" Wilton Shop King at the flea today. I couldn't leave it behind for $25! I was arguing about the price when the guy said, 'well, hold on, I have the thing that goes in the hole around here somewhere' and he pulled out the Hardy. :willy_nil
Yes please!
Even has both of the pipe jaws. :rocker:

Have a newbie question. On the side it says "Chicago IL USA". So is it safe to assume that it was "made" in Chicago even though it doesn't explicitly say? If so, what year are we looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Picked up a vintage CMan 3.5" today at Goodwill for $5.99. Surface rust but doesn't look like it was ever used (look at the top, not a file scratch). Can't find much info on the 5185 . . .this one has a CM plate (not cast info) and has a ball end on the handle - not a milled/riged like in the 40's catalogs. Anyone have any idea when this was made?

Here's a little guy I picked up at the local Flea yesterday:
A no name mini vise that someone had grafted/brazed to a 3" dia slug of solid copper. 1 5/16" wide jaws, works smoothly. For $12 he had to come home with me. I'll be leaving the patina as is on this one.

Greetings!

I am an amateur blacksmith and was talking with my father a couple of weeks ago about my need for a post vise. He comes back with this giant of a vise, covered in years of dirt and grime, and feeling like it weighs 40+ lbs. It appeared to still be functional but needs a little restoration. Nothing a little TLC cant fix. Long story short is that I was able to restore the vise to good working order and use it in my budding shop.
Now here is where this wonderful subreddit comes in. According to my father, this vise belonged to my Great-Grandfather. Also, during the restoration I suspected that the mandibles may be made out of iron and the screws steel (something that could suggest early 1900-1940s manufacture). Now, I know that my grandfather settled into southern New England (central CT) after emigrating from Europe. However, I do not know if he purchased this vise brand new or if it was used. Also, I did not see any maker's marks on the vise when I was restoring it.

Think you guys can help me identify it? I know that Parker mfg made vises. It certainly fits geographically and chronologically. However, my research into historical Parker vises does not reveal any dual screw, chain drive vise. I'm wondering if any of you guys might have additional insight. I posted this on other websites and they directed me to this mega-thread.

That my friend, I am 99% sure, is a Fisher-Norris double post chain vise. VERY RARE very sought after. I've had 4 in mybpissesion the last 18 months. Yours should have a # under the jaws. Do a search and you will find ads. There is a Fisher-Norris webpage on FB.

Now you do have some issues. The cast mounting tabs are broken and missing BUT it is still a cool vise.

Great find!!

The only year I have a catalog listing for that series is 1945. Interesting though, it shows it with the round nose, not the flat nose screw... and the flat hose screw was started in the late 30's? it could easily be just artistic licence, since these were all drawn, not photographed...

Milisac: i can't recall anybody mentioning that they've read the entire vise thread lately. especially a new member so VERY WELL DONE SIR!!!!

i'm several years behind several of the members that have been on this thread from day one, but unlike some of them i think i'm the top poster and i've read every post since i've joined. maybe some of them read every post and just don't post a lot, but not certain about that. there is a lot of GREAT TO NOT SO GOOD STUFF and a ton of amazing pictures of vises with a fair amount of BS sprinkled in.

so how was it to read all at once. painful, humorous or a great display of vise **** and a good read?

also here's a little test:

1) favorite vise or post your top 10 or 20 if you can't pick just one
2) smallest vise you remember seeing
3) biggest vise you remember seeing
4) most unique
5) oldest

you don't have to answer any or all of these questions, but if you want to i'd be curious what you thought because it's had almost 7,000,000 views now and we don't get a lot of feedback

again WELL DONE!!

CK: yep you didn't overpay for that one. nice find and it's a great vise and looks like it's in great shape too.

Username: i'd say Bcom is fairly close with the dates of your Shop King. Wilton moved to Schiller Park location in 1957 and pretty sure the 14 next to Chicago is the old ZIP CODE for their address there. i'm not a huge fan of small open screw vises, but they do come in handy and it's not often you get a hardy and pipe jaws with your vise.

GMAN: does the wife know about the latest vise finds? man you are picking up some cool stuff.

Brorex: that Wilton is a good buy and not sure which one it is, but if it's not cracked, broken or welded it will clean up nicely and work on any member's bench. the other two vises are not bad deals either, but i'm not a huge fan of most Parker's and Columbians.

ALL: i took my wife to a couple stops today and chauffeured her to a few of hers and one of my stops i picked up this Record quick release 6 inch wide jaw vise. it was at a young GJ member's house that i hadn't met yet and even though it was a little rough around the edges i know the cash will help him build and restore a few things he's working on.

Man, all these Craftsman/Reed and Craftsman/Rock Island finds are killing me!

There was a super nice CM/RI locally and the guy was always busy, cancelled at the last minute, "call me on Tues", and then silence....ugh.

LOL.....sort of! I haven't hidden the last couple of purchases, and I've sold a couple that made me money, so the pressure is off a little bit. I'm also planning to make enough off the Wilton 500 and 400 that I get to keep the Baldor stand for free, so she's okay with it. See how easy that is?

GMAN: i know it's hard being in a VISE RICH area like you are and i'd never have a saw buck in my wallet if i lived there much less a benjamin to buy anything else. of course i would lose a few pounds because i've always chose a tool and especially a vise purchase over food if there was a choice. WELL DONE.

VA: i've technically had one foot off the wagon the entire time and even though i've shipped a few out and need to ship a few more out i've maybe averaged 4 or 5 vise purchases a month this year. of course the thing i haven't done is found vises like you, Sandman and Meatsis have that would cost a mortgage payment out here if i found one. not that this Record or any of the others i own are for sale, but i'm starting to realize that i only need so many and most anything is up for a trade for other tools or stuff or offers.

thanks for the support and i'm here for you if you need me to ship you some more chain and locks.

drivesitfar:
1. Versa-Vise (I want one), hydraulic Studebaker vise (I used to drive a Stude), the Flexivise, any ratcheting vise or foot-controlled vise or chain-drive vise, Emmert Universal Vise, any step-by-step restoration
2. the Wilton salesman sample posted with miniature objects to make it look huge. I think the jaws were under 1"
3. There was that one bigass Columbian that I never saw the model on, then there was the 700lb railroad vice that we only saw an ad for. I don't count the big homemade one since it wasn't manufactured.
4. Emmert Universal Vise
5. hmmm, I've seen a couple of Athols (including mine) with a patent date in the 1870s

I've enjoyed reading the posts. I was stalled out for a while, but found myself with several periods of "free time" that I could read.

CW: yep that's the one. i'll need some help from you, Fretters, Dutch and a few others to get my SQ apart cause it's pretty gummed up and barely working. with the closed end on the dynamic slide and the quick release mechanism it won't be a simple fix, but i think it should clean up ok and work like it should with a few hours of TLC.

Marty: i thought you might like that FPU vice.

Sandman: I agree that the Leinen vice is also a KEEPER and works very similar to the FPU Bison only i think the Leinens are a little more stout. i had a 150 and one of my clients needed a vise (vice) so it's now on his bench and i've offered to buy or trade him back several times with the same answer. HE LOVES IT and sorry, but it's not moving so i guess i'll have to have him put it in his will for me.

Mlisac: Congrats again for reading the entire thread and picking up some good knowledge too. I really don't recall which vise is the oldest, but Parker's have a 1867 patent date on them. i would bet some of the blacksmith vises might be, but since a good portion of them were made by blacksmiths it's hard to say which one(s) are older or oldest.

i agree you need to find a versa vise and i just bought my second one from a member and looking for a bench to mount it on. I'm guessing you saw this Versa vise video? after i saw it i had to have one myself even though i have a baby bullet on a power arm with a cool clamp the versa vise will still get a fair amount of use.

i remember the funny pictures with the salesman's wilton vise just before i joined and saw that some of these guys have a pretty good sense of humor and still do. i've seen a chrome swivel jaw Prentiss in person that another member owns that actually works like a real one and i think it is an inch wide jaw.

the Emmerts are just cool and old and were built to last even with all the abuse some give their vises.

the 695 RR vise is still on the minds of many members and TJ said he'd eat his hat if it really was found and shown to be real. Demo and VA might recall who's vise was posted that was the biggest, but TJ's Prentiss 98 might be up there with the HUGE Holland's and Reeds that have been posted. i've still yet to see a real old 8 or 9 inch wide jaw old US vise in person, but i can tell you moving my 170 or maybe it's 190 pound Reed 4c is tough enough in one piece. the day we find the 695 pounder will be even more fun than when Oldie and BC found the Craftsman 5198 after years of talking about it.

again WELL DONE and thanks for taking the effort to read the thread because as i get older it's harder for me to remember a vise if a member asks and i don't have VA's searching skills to look up stuff as quick so anytime you want to help some member please do.

somebody made a youtube video of GJ's vises and i think it's 4 videos about an hour each and that was made maybe 2 years ago so imagine all the vises you've seen the past few days.

here's one of the videos in case you might have a few minutes to watch one.

Eye candy for you guys. Went shopping for an acorn table and this is what we found even though it's not a vise.

Yep Trijeff, it was a Hollands #48.---Biggest swivel-jaw I know of.---345, or 347 lbs., one or the other, memory is fading.---I'll try to find the post.

http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/images/4/4a/Hollands48.png

But there was an American Scale posted in (Biggest Vise Ever Made?) thread, that is supposed to be 9 inch jaws and 400 lbs..---But I kind of question that because it's setting on a 32 inch pallet and my Yost is 32 1/2'' long and only weighs 291 lbs..---That means the thing has to be built to overkill even surpassing any of Reed's tanks.:dunno:

You can see it on Page 5, Post 99, of the afore mentioned thread.
