Thanks G-man. I soaked it in WD rust soak and it looks better already. That stuff works pretty good

If that doesn't get it down to 100% bare metal, get a gallon of Evapo Rust and dunk the pieces overnight....stuff is amazing, can be reused, and is non-toxic. TSC has it for about $20 right now, and it's worth every penny!

About 20 minutes of wire brushing with a good grinder and it will be ready for paint. You cold also use Electrolysis works really well.

You must be a lot faster with a grinder and wire wheel than I am. I took a very dirty, but not rusty Wilton 400S down to bare metal yesterday with a good grinder and a fresh wire wheel and it took over an hour to get it truly down to bare metal.

400 is a big vise so an hour is fast, the little rock island would be done pretty quick

Picked up my first leg vice on Saturday 5 1/2" jaws, I've unsiezed the pivot pin, the main screw and the sliding handle. Also managed to remove the cast socket that the foot was stuck in, looks like it is original.
20160911_104528.jpg

Now I've just got to work out how to straighten both halves as they are bent where the main screw goes through, think this might require a visit to my dad the use of his fly press! Hopefully I can then ditch one or two of the 3 thrust washers.

Where I picked it up the bloke had a lovely old cafe racer he'd recently bought.

Strangely the old tax disc expired the month I was born .......
20160910_141503.jpg

I wish the tax was still just a fiver :-/

I also picked up an anvil there which I've posted in the anvil thread.

Well my new vise came today yes it's a stumper so any help is greatly appreciated the vise is very very well made the tolerances are every bit as good as a Wilton. I'm not sure where it was made or even when but the quality is definitely second to none. The castings are clean not sloppy I'm positive it's not china but not sure.
It even has a 360 degree swivel base. Also the bolts that hold the jaws on are not metric or sae rather a different size altogether.

Rusty: definitely looks European to me so possibly German like CW mentioned. nice little vise

CW: i'm without an anvil and a blacksmith vise and you found both at one stop. well done. i was 17 the year that tab expired and never in my wildest dreams thought i'd be buying and collecting old vises and tools at my age now. nice finds and that 224 pound anvil you posted is worthy of a post here when you have time to on your next post helping somebody or posting up your Parkinson vise stand sitting in front of your garage (hint hint).

Cwazy the images for the eBay listing won't load for me but the 100mm width is close so sounds promising.

The design is different but the label with Gemere on it is exactly the same, so perhaps that is the manufacturer? Here is the picture from the auction.

A little word of warning, whilst this is a German vise the and Gemere appears to be the German company name that word also exists in Italian and means moan ... this can lead to some very colourful search results if you are looking for images ;)

That's funny I bet there is some interesting photos to be found. Back on subject found a post in the old tools thread where a Swedish member posted these Gemere vise pictures.

Here's a old guy. July 19, 1870 to be exact. No. 2 Stephens. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 are both two inch . The difference is the No. 2 has a small anvil pad and a spring in the locking handle. The No. 1 has neither feature. There are 4 patent dates listed on this lil gem. April 5 1864, Mar 12 1868, Oct 26 1869, July 19 1870. 146 years old... she's a real peach!

That thing is every bit as sweet as the largest vises in this thread. I would love to own that.

I have the same vise which I did up and posted in this thread. Couldn't quite figure out its origin either. Even with some German Google skills.

Mine was missing all the decals but the shape and words stahl Titan on the side are a dead giveaway.

It's a big vice and mine was beat but turned into a great user.

The towers are hollow though. I figured these might have been an eastern Germany product. Most companies that went belly up prior to the fall of the wall never got a digital footprint making them impossible to find online.

Pic of mine restored:

Theres only so much you can do if something is abused. In this case the Jaws had seen the wrong end of a grinder.

They were reversible but reversed the fit up was terrible as you can see. That said the vise is great as a daily user and the screw has no slop in it. Iirc I paid fifteen euros and reused some paint I had.

That my friend, I am 99% sure, is a Fisher-Norris double post chain vise. VERY RARE very sought after. I've had 4 in mybpissesion the last 18 months. Yours should have a # under the jaws. Do a search and you will find ads. There is a Fisher-Norris webpage on FB.

Now you do have some issues. The cast mounting tabs are broken and missing BUT it is still a cool vise.

Great find!!

@Joe.Striper: Thanks for the insight. I should be at the shop this weekend and can check out the jaws for the # (which I presume is a model number of sorts). I am curious though. A quick google image search reveals Fisher-Norris chain vices with the chains between the mandibles rather than on the front of the vice like in mine. Could that be due to Fisher making their vices differently in the past compared to more recently?

The pics youre looking at are probably of the larger # 4-7 models. Yours might be a #3. The # is UNDER the jaws inside.

Picked up a vintage CMan 3.5" today at Goodwill for $5.99. Surface rust but doesn't look like it was ever used (look at the top, not a file scratch). Can't find much info on the 5185 . . .this one has a CM plate (not cast info) and has a ball end on the handle - not a milled/riged like in the 40's catalogs. Anyone have any idea when this was made?

Awesome find. you ****! $5.99?

JKB: always love your patent and drawing posts. thanks

LF: nice to see you posting again. i'm not certain that nice looking Prentiss #22 has all it's mounting feet because the seller is only showing 2 in the picture. a swivel base for that size vise might be hard to find if it is broken off.

There's 29 days left on the auction LF.---Plenty of time to ask the seller a question so you would have it on record that the seller said all feet were there.---If they are, that's not a bad deal at all for a vise that size.---Especially a big swivel jaw.---But Drive is right, I'd want to know for sure before I pulled the trigger.

And found a Reed 403 ½. No hammer marks on the slide, and good looking jaws.
