On CL today. Judging by those dissimilar jaws, i can see why it got the paint treatment. Says 6 inch though. Maybe a deal in there, but not for me

And the huge ex-Royal Canadian Navy RAE No.106. Semi-steel "unbreakable". So cheap I won't tell!

The Ball Base Vise is a beauty! Now if someone would make a semi-steel version of that with a dual swivel head like the Taiwan jobs and fully enclosed like a Wilton...

Dean: i thought somebody would have said it already and i'm sure they are all busy today so i will be the first to say that your posts of all the bits and pieces of Reed before you actually showed it all in one piece turned out pretty sweet. of course you know i like Reeds or maybe you don't, but i bet that vise will serve you well unless you already have it heading to another grateful person's bench.

WELL DONE!!

Thank you. I will be using it myself (any things better than the crappy craftsman that I have been using). Reading your posts about the reeds really helped. I'm from PA so an Reed vise seemed like the right one to have. Lol.

If you go to look at that vise make sure it doesn't have a broken/ground area on the base just under the D jaw. Vises that size almost invariably have a jaw support...

I thought the same thing, but have no plans to go look at it. If it did break they must have cleaned it up with a grinder as you suggested. Then again, it's only got half a notch for the pipe jaws, so who knows what they were thinking when they made it!

Edit to add: I just found pics on another forum of a very similar vise by Meadville, but a 6" model, and it didn't have a jaw support for the dynamic.

Yes its the first Ball vice I have got.
Saw a Samsonia 39 today as well, in use so not for sale but those are nice.

Lovely things the BB's, aren't they. Deceptively stout considering their size, and that ball setup is extremely effective. You dropped on a really nice one there. :)

Bet that 39 was a big lad?

The Ball is sweet, it moves so nicely but locks up solid with little effort, full lock- unlock - full lock is 1/3 turn

I can't believe you have hidden the fact it still has some of the label on it. That is the best condition BB vise I've seen.

Excellent win for you :)

Quite a lump, it made the bench it was on look light duty and it was made out of 2" planks.
The mechanic was beating something apart in it with a sledge hammer so how long it will last is debatable, wasn't in bad shape overall.

It's cast steel rather than cast iron so will probably take a fair beating before it finally fails .... although that does kind of depend on how good the mechanics aim is really.

I had 2 of these wilton vises that I took the best pieces off and made 1. Does anyone know where I could get some jaws for it? I believe it's supposed to have regular jaws and pipe jaws also. I thought about making some wide jaws out of wood for it. I don't think I have any hardwood laying around though.

Picked up this Reed 105 about a month ago. It had some surface rust the spindle has been repaired and it was well used over the years. I did some cleaning up and used BLO as a finish. Had to use the 6" FPU Bison to hold it and finish up the jaws, can't say enough about those FPU's great vise. This Reed will be great for holding my chainsaws when they need sharpening.

This vise is for sale here locally. It doesn't have any name or anything else on it. Missing the pipe jaws also. Though I'd ask here to see if it was worth a buy or not. Figure it's Chinese being no name. It had a tag riveted on but it's gone. It does have some weight to it. It belongs to an older gentleman who said it was his dad's and is too big for him.

CA: are you hand filing the tops of the jaws on your Reed 105? nice that the FPU can hold that 80 pound vise without any problem. i'm happy to hear you seem to like yours as much as i like my smaller version.

David: can you tell us the width of the jaws and the weight of your 2 old vises? i'm pretty sure i've seen that name before and maybe a vise or two with that name on it, but best i can tell you is that is a very early 1900's design and all my L.M. & V and some of my Fulton vises have that same nut on the back of the dynamic jaw.

Brorex: it's the FAMOUS CHINESE WONDER VISE that so many guys just love. it's really a POS as far as quality, but as i've said many many many many times i have yet to find an owner of one that doesn't love theirs. if you get a great deal on it buy it or wait for another one because there might be 10 or more makers of it in the last 40 or so years and Wilton even has a version of one now for i think $120-150 for a new one.

ZOOMIE: it's a monster and nice find. also your dog is pretty close to the dog my parents had when i was a teenager.

Drives I am hand filing the jaws it can ware out file pretty fast but it's not as messy as the belt sanders and holding the Reed would be a work out. Of course hand filing makes you use muscle you forgot you had but I enjoy it.

Outlawmws: I seen that when I was checking out the vise. Pretty decent price though so thought I'd ask here.

Drivesitfar: Add me to the list. I have a rotating vise like that from harbor freight that I have mounted out in the shed. I know it's limitations and use it often. And love it by the way. Was hoping the one I posted was better quality. I'll pass on it though for sure.

Thanks for the replies guys

Standard Handy label by the looks.

Very nice, I saw a 3C handy vise today when I went to collect a seized blacksmith vice I'd bought. It was rusted up, both jaws missing and some chunks missing from both the jaw shelf and around the jaw mounting screw holes ...... sometimes you have to just wait for a better one. Your waiting paid off :)

I've been looking for a blacksmith/leg vice for ages and they are always either too far away or tiny, and I always thought if I was going to get one I didn't want a tiddler.

Anyway last week I spotted one that was about half an hours drive away and had been relisted a few times, it looked a reasonable size but for some reason was in pieces. Anyway I was the only bidder so off I went and picked it up. Gave it a quick measure when I got there and the jaws are 5 1/2 inches, so not to small.

1.jpg
Turns out it had been lying around in the yard long enough to have seized up.

2.jpg
However a bit of elbow grease and a light application of the blue spanner had it stripped and loosened up enough to see how well it worked.

3.jpg
Jaws are a little pitted.

4.jpg
Hmmm, something is not right there, this has been seriously overtightened in the past and bent both legs :(

5.jpg
See the 3 thrust washers needed so the vice can close fully, otherwise the screw bottoms out due to the bent legs.

As is always the case after you finally find one another will turn up, this one was on that infamous auction site and only 5 minutes from my house. However it is missing the mounting bracket and spring as well as being advertised as rusted solid.
But always up for a challenge and who turns down a 6 1/2 inch jaw blacksmith vice for £5 ? Couldn't really go to far wrong I thought for the price of a pint.
11.jpg

Hmmm the handle hole is a little worn.... oh and the main screw is seized solid.
12.jpg

He wasn't exaggerating about the rust
13.jpg

That hinge hasn't moved in a while
14.jpg

Will be fun undoing that pivot bolt
15.jpg

Makes the 5 1/2 inch look quite small beside it .... you might also notice the 5 1/2 has been straightened up a bit after a visit to the fly press :) Although this did open a slight crack that will now need welding back up :(

When I was collecting the vice it turned out it used to belong to the guys father and had spent the last 20 years sitting outside his workshop, hence the amout of rust.
Being a little bored this evening I decided to see how bad it really was, weapon of choice was the blue spanner and I thought I'd start with the pivot nut as it was the smallest part :) Success! Although the threads look a bit suspect.
21.jpg

Spurred on by my success I decided to have a go at the main screw, this was really just a case of warming the nut/box, mostly at the end where the screw goes in as I assumed there would really only be rust at that end. Luckily I guessed right and she undid after just a little heat, just really enough to burn the dirt off the outside.
22.jpg

Interesting to see the thrust washer on this one actually fits into the hole in the leg.
23.jpg

Getting the pivot bolt out involved more heat, a big crowbar to work the jaws open and closed about 1/2 an inch, and a big copper mallet to knock the bolt back and forth till it finally gave up and popped out.
Getting the two halves of the hinge apart involved opening jaws and then placing a cold chisel in the gap in the hinge before closing the jaws again which would push the hinge apart a little, this was repeated till it came apart.
24.jpg

The pivot bolt looks hand made and is certainly usable again :) Interestingly it appears tapered.
25.jpg

The jaws look to be in a bad state, will know more when they get cleaned up.
26.jpg27.jpg

Still not too shabby for a fiver :)

Blacksmith leg vices, I only own one which is pretty rusty, but all I have seen have been rusted, broken in some way or worn out, or any combination of those. You should see the handle hole in my local blacksmiths main one, the wear is incredible.

Dutch: I guess they were made to be abused more than most, but they were still being sold in the 50's so you'd think there would still be some good ones out there?

This weekend I got a nice little surprise. My son had a Columbian 503 given to him, passed along from someone else, via a friend of his, and he gave it to me. It is in really nice shape and so I'll just clean it up and oil it.
