The time has come to build a new house and shop. We are still finalizing the land purchase but I have drawn up the shop and house as a preliminary layout.

The shop will be built first in order to keep construction materials stored safe and dry. I will come back and finish the interior of the shop once the house is built. It will serve as a haven for my car projects as well as metal fabrication. Planning to have an area devoted to a mill, lathe, plasma table, welders, etc.

Specs:

30' deep x 56' wide
12' walls
Scissor trusses over 2 bays
3 - 10'x10' garage doors
Small storage/compressor room

Of course! Thats the second most important thing. Right behind the electricity itself.

Cool. I am building a 30x56 soon as well. Mine will be going the long way though.

I debated which way I wanted to orient the layout but I ultimately decided on this so that I could fit my 3 cars inside comfortably. I hate having to move somthing in order to get something else out.

The house will likely get a standard 2 car garage to keep my daily beater and the wife's car

what program did you use to draw thins in?

This is sketchup. Its free to download. I believe its owned by google. I use solidworks and AutoCAD for work but find sketchup quicker to toss something together. Pretty handle little program.

I like the idea....but hopefully you don't have all of those things pictured already....all the materials you will need to build a house will take up considerably more space than ever thought possible. As soon as my roof was done, the "new" part of the shop started taking things in...extra wood from framing and forming, housewrap, fasteners, extra roofing materials, trim & siding brake, stacks of vinyl siding products, etc. The existing shop held a plethora of peel & stick, framing connectors, buckets of tools, saw horses..just saying be prepared for a lot of stuff :)

We will be living in our current house while the new house and garage are being built so the new garage will remain empty except for a few items. I do not have the mill, lathe, or plasma table yet due to lack of space in the current garage. My lift is stored at my dads house which is next door to the property we are buying. He has a 2 car 24x30 detached garage that will help to store things if needed as well.

I wouldn't put the lathe and mill next to the weld/fab area. That is the messiest, dirtiest area in my shop. Think about it, all that grit from grinding is nasty stuff around precision machines.

Great use of design software to do the layout with. Should be a great space to work in.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely take that into consideration.

Nice DWG, going to be a nice shop.

Personally I would switch the mill and lathe (or move them away from fab area, but that's not always possible). I hate trying to use a mill in a corner. Sooner or later you going to want to run a long piece or use the max table travel. The lathe doesn't need much room on the tailstock end, can go right up against the wall really. This would even give more headstock room for long stuff.

JMO.

Very good point. I will pull the mill out of the corner for sure.

Bringing this thing back from the dead. We finally got our house built and the garage will be going in starting late winter/early spring. I'll likely change title of this thread to follow the layout/size slightly as well as some of the toys inside, but more on that later. In the meantime, here are some pics of the house build to keep you interested.

Start of excavation

Not fully fenced. Only fenced on one side because my parents live on the other side. Plan is to put one big invisible fence in between our yards for dogs to enjoy.

Nice house!

Thanks! My Dad and I did a lot of the work ourselves. Had my contractor handle the framing and exterior work but we wired the house, trimmed out, etc. I built all of the ductwork, handrail, and some other finishes in my shop (I run a custom fabrication/welding shop).

Keeping an eye on this one. Bridgeport, lathe, plasma table, couple of welders, lifts. Sounds like my kind of shop. What kind of fabrication work are in you into? I own a small custom exhaust shop here in NC.

Since I made the first post I actually left my old job as a mechanical engineer and took a job as GM of a custom fab shop so I build anything/everything that comes through the door. At home most of what I do is car-related. My work is only 1 mile from my house so the plasma table probably wont be a necessity in my shop. I already own the lift, welders, etc. A mill and lathe will be on my list to purchase, however.

Where in Central PA? I have some family that are pretty active in the automotive scene up there as I grew up in Harrisburg. We probably know each other.

You are one patient guy. I just saw the date of the original post!

Our neighbors decided they didn’t want anyone building between them and my parents (on a 2 acre lot owned by my parents before they moved in) and hired a lawyer to drag out the process for 2 years. So patience is an understatement haha

Here’s a time lapse of the house build for anyone interested.

That vid is really cool, you did a nice job on it. But I got to tell you the going black flashes brought on convulsions and I've since passed away after hitting my head on my welding table.

It was a good life and my only regret was watching this one video.

Please let my wife know she can find my rotting corpse in the shop in a few days.

thanks!

Hahahahaha my wife compiled the video but it would’ve taken days to edit out all the night shots so we chose to just keep it in there.

I agree though. It’s tough to watch. Just squint a little and it helps lol.
