Get those off Craig's?
Not off CL an Estate sale. Replaced the roll pins and cleaned up the threads today.

Need to find some new tool rests and shields, the ones that came with it were pretty rough but it runs smooth. Really liking this color first time I used it think it came out ok..

For parts, you might try the BOYD forum over at OWWM.org, they pop up once in a while. Need to be a member to view, but that's easy.

I bought this old Milwaukee grinder at a pawn shop. It was built in 1967. I usually like something older but the lights got my attention. They're really cool because, well for one they're so vintage, plus the lights come on automatically when the shields are lowered. The only thing is they're sooo large for this grinder. maybe I'll use them on something else.

That grinder was definitely made by Doerr.

Those are all so similar. How do you tell the difference?
Is the one I got 2 weeks ago a Wissota, or something else?

You look at the base, the number of bolts holding the motor case together, the construction of the wheel guards (stamped vs cast), the weight, etc. I can't tell who made your grinder---clearly my guesses have not scored too well lately--yet I don't see any classic Wissota clues: slim motor, integral quench tray in base, stamped metal guard covers. But it could be a very early Wissota :dunno:

If you show a pic of the complete grinder with guards and rests it might shed light on it..

Here is a photo the seller posted on C/L Hope this helps.
I didn't take any better pics before I took it apart.

BTW, in case this is a clue, the cord was old and cracked and had a molded 3 prong grounding plug.

So my Blue Point grinder that I thought might be a wissota looks a whole lot like that Rockwell that is probably a Doerr. :dunno:

Here is a close up of the data plate. Amps are a bit different at 4.0 with a 1/3 HP rating but the case sure looks the same even though the mounting lugs on the base are different.
The case number on mine says 42

Shirtless, those look completely different to me... look at the base and how the mounting holes are made flat for the bolt head, and the profile and attachment for the bells at the case.

Outlaw:
Thanks for looking at it with another pair of eyes. Being new to this vintage grinder corner of GJ, I realize that those differences alone are enough to exclude certain makers. I like my little grinder so it doesn't really matter who made the thing, but it is just interesting to me to gather as much as I can about its parentage.

Here is a 10" Utility grinder I restored a couple of years ago. Had to make a few parts for it including an new water pot and caster plate. Normally I would want a grinder secured solidly to a bench but went ahead and made this one mobile as I had run out of bench space. It has a Govt ID tag as well as the equipment dealers tag. Runs smooth. Ed.

Well, I'm not quite fanatical enough to cast a new water pot although that would have been pretty spectacular. I did machine it though by taking a 4" malleable weld on pipe fitting and turning the OD to fit the holder while leaving a lip on the top to support it. Also the bottom to round it out and smooth out the casting. Just happened to have one around for inspiration. Ed.

I bought two buffers/wire wheels this weekend. I wanted the attached dust recovery system for my 10" Baldor that I use for buffing my vise parts. I needed a respirator before I bought this because the dust was sooo bad.

Here is my Baldor with the Cincinnati Fan dust collector attached. I love this machine so much.

Here is the Delta buffer with an encapsulated wire wheel and 3M wheel. Cleaned up good.

Lastly here is my 3/4 hp US made Dayton Grinder on a custom stand. New bearings and a new centrifugal switch.

I havent finished my last grinder yet....

Thanks guys. That was a good little project. I had that oval piece of steel laying around for a couple of years after I cut it out of a plate I made to repair a scalping screen. Found the perfect home for it under the grinder. Ed.

Milwaukee-branded Wissota 10-inch Grinder

This Milwaukee grinder is not technically "vintage", being made in 1999, but it is way better than most anything currently available. Made by Wissota for Milwaukee, it features a capacitor start motor with an honest 1hp. It is a monster of a grinder. I installed new wheels and it runs like silk. Fresh eyeshields (lighted) and rubber isolation feet. I think that even Zkling would approve of this one!

Almost done on this Superior. Still need to paint the lettering, repaint that front foot, and then focus on the mandrel.

brought this 10" Ford Smith grinder home few days ago.

not a bench grinder, but it's a beauty all the same.

will be on the backburner until other projects are done. 1hp 208v 3phase machine that I'll grab a vfd for.

LOL, I know....but they are 1/4" thick and possibly hardened. They may look flimsy, but they are ungodly rigid. I did find that Wissota's own version of the same grinder has cast tool rests. I was considering calling them and checking availability, but I doubt they would be affordable (to me).

Looks like I've missed a lot of posts. I don't know why some posts/threads are 'skipped over' when I use the 'New Posts' button.

Anyway, I spotted this little vintage bench grinder in the Metro Detroit CL today. Blissfield is 1/2 way between Ann Arbor and Toledo on route 23.

Capture%20BP1.jpg

Capture%20BP2.jpg

http://toledo.craigslist.org/tls/5751668409.html

The tool rests are mounted where the spark arresters or eye shields should go, and the RH stone is too thick so the flange is mounted backwards! :willy_nil

Wissota made this guy, if I'm not mistaken.

Somebody please rescue this little guy.

Stumbled across this minty Baldor manufactured Rockwell over the weekend. I've already sent it on its way to Long Island.

Some of you may have seen this little portable B&D on my restoration thread but I figured I would throw it in this thread too.
