No business checks? No checks over $500?

I hate auctions like this. You end up bidding against some rich farmer who doesn't know he's paying retail or more.

The 10% buyers premium would piss me right off.
I hit a lot of auctions, but damned if I'm paying a 10% markup on something. The auctioneer gets a percentage of the sale, why give another 10%?
We live in the age of the ******** fee.

+1. I avoid any auction with a buyers premium. I'll be damned if I am paying someone extra just for the privilege of buying off of them.

You guys better stay away from industrial and commercial auctions. I've seen 18% buyers ripoff.

2 hour drive one way for me. He has an auction every weekend and most seem tool oriented. But four hours of driving, plus fuel and my time at the auction itself always factors into me skipping them.

That said, I believe the best scores and excitement are to be had from auctions.

Buyer's/seller's fees depend on the area, in the northeast its common to split fees equally between buyer and seller. In the midwest its typically all on the seller and auctioneers typically rip for more - 30%+ being common vs 10-20% total up here. In some areas on-site auctions are exempt from sales tax so the extras dont add up to much. Regardless, please be upset and skip auctions for silly reasons. Most of us can do the basic math to adjust our bids and its more iron for the rest of us.

As for this particular auction, too bad its not a week later or theyd have some of the country's bigger collectors in the area for Arnfest, myself included.

The thing here is, most people don't adjust their bids, which is why I avoid auctions with a buyer's premium. They bid just like it isn't there. I have gotten a few good deals at auctions, but any auction here with tools or guns advertised bring out the people who come loaded for bear. It's hard to compete with folks who are willing to pay new prices for used stuff. Plus, auctions here generally charge sales tax, which can add another 6 or 7 percent to the final cost. Most auction deals here really aren't a deal after you add 17 percent to them.

You nailed it!
The auctioneers here go between 12-15% commission, and sales tax is collected, unless you are exempt. No auctioneer in at least a 50 mile radius charges a buyers premium, but have seen it on industrial / commercial sales,
Using some outside the area auctioneer.
