Just finished this little Simplex from the Raytheon company. Pd $25 for it. Really nice condition. Used my gold leaf paint pen. Very happy with the results

I know its off topic but I had to put up a pic of my Restored Beverly Shear.

Very nice job Joe, your restores are getting better and better.

I was fitting a Parker collar today.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-KctZ9v3/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-KctZ9v3/0/S/Fitting%20a%20Parker%20%2379%20Collar-09-2016%20%283%29-S.jpg" alt=""></a>

I like to have both shoulders parallel and the collar touching both levels before fitting a custom Bronze wear disc. I am not sold on a thrust bearing just yet. The pocket should be machined to accept a needle thrust bearing and this guy is just to long.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-jJvf7kc/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-jJvf7kc/0/S/Fitting%20a%20Parker%20%2379%20Collar-09-2016%20%286%29-S.jpg" alt=""></a>

What stood out was after I cleaned up the front castings and noticed a square rectangle shape visible in the casting.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-DRJShBP/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Vise-Repairs/i-DRJShBP/0/S/Steel%20bar%20in%20a%20Parker-S.jpg" alt=""></a>

When Parker adds a steel bar to their Dynamic Jaw Support they add the bar the whole length. Kind of surprised me.

Dutch: while i love a huge vice and especially an old ENGLISH one if that is your living room carpet i'm guessing your next posts might be from the real VISE HEAVEN after your wife sees it. WELL DONE SIR!! and glad you saved your back so you can spiff it up and show us what it looks like put back together.

Mark: thanks for your 411 about my little clamp on Wilton. if you've taken apart your little identical clamp ons to spiff them up is there a clip or anything i should know and if you want to post on the 101 thread where i asked this question please do. i think i'm going to remove the red paint even though guessing it's original and just put on some BLO and grease it up and use it. these are handy little vises

More pics.
View media item 63966View media item 63962View media item 63967Back together but not properly as I will give it a good clean, I remembered to bring on the stop washers that came out from splitting. I put a bit of scrap ply to save the conservatory carpet, Drives that was my van carpet so I don't worry about it.
CW Thanks, also picked up an old style perfect wood vice No16 from the same seller for £40, unfortunately missing the QR bits.

Parkinson No9A 7 1/2" jaws, opens 10" weighs 144lb, the biggest they made an there is only a few English vices that were heavier.
Cost £160 and a 3 hour round trip.
Its in real good order as big vices here are usually well abused.
The seller was an old guy and it came out of his dads diesel repair shop, he said its a least 70 years old and that's likely accurate.

Dutch, can you post more pics of the woodworking vise? I have a big one I posted earlier that shares some similarities, but I know nothing about except that it was the second one made as every part was hand stamped '2’ .

Dutch: i didn't know they made English vices that big. great find and i bet you were smiling all the way back home. just curious since all the quick release vices i've owned have a closed back on the dynamic does your 9A have the same issue? also how did you get it apart and put it back together if it is closed?

i bet a big quick release is a breeze to put back together compared to having to line up the big maybe 1 inch screw and 80+ pound dynamic and screw our big US made ones back together.

wood vice looks pretty nice too and hope you can find or make the missing parts.

Drives
The dynamic is not fully closed on these but the screw goes into a hole on the back. A large washer around the screw at the back is all that retains the dynamic, it hits the guides in the static behind the nut. To split, you remove the qr plate screws, operate it and pull it out of the dynamic a couple inch, remove the washers, put the screw back in and screw the plate back on, then you can operate the QR and slide the dynamic out easily. Getting back together is easy but you need the vice on its side really to get the QR bar in the nut slot. Mine is together but I didn't do that so the nut isn't pressed into the screw so it doesn't operate, but since it will have to come apart to get it on a bench or stand it doesn't matter.

BRO: sorry don't know much about Rex vises, but it does look like its missing a swivel base of some sort. it might be old enough that it has the thru bolt swivel base that you adjust from below the bench. looks solid and not a common name so it would get my attention if priced right. also looks like it's set up to have pipe jaws that might also be missing.

Yep, but it was on Dutch's patch and he spotted it first. An excellent find :)

Pleased for him would be a better description. Good to see that he's managed to get hold of a couple of uncommon vices.

Thanks guys
Worth mentioning it was listed as "Large Vice" 3 pictures and a minimal description that didn't mention it was a Parkinson, ie its only because I do a daily ebay search and look at all the new listings that I saw it.

Thanks drives I went ahead and picked it up for $20 I'll post up some picks looks like it's been welded down towards the bottom. Doesn't look like it wad broken though not sure why it would of been welded. Pipe jaws are missing for sure. On the bottom there's a round raised area so it probably had a swivel base that's gone. Edit: it is tapped on bottom so maybe your correct with it being locked from bottom

Bro: here's my old Reed that is a bolt through with the huge wing nut so you can see what parts you are missing. it probably would work just fine if you ground off the part where the screw goes in the base and then made a stand for it and bolted it with a couple big bolts. take a few pictures of yours to post of the bottom and welds and from each side since your vise isn't a very common name if you have time.

Dutch: pays to pay attention and good finds. i really bet you were smiling a lot on the drive home. just an FYI. i put down a 4x6x3/4 rubber horse mat on top of the back of my folded down seats in my Honda Pilot so it's more like a pickup with a canopy which is good for our rainy climate.

The Rex is in overall horrible condition. The slide is cracked at the end. Not sure what's going on with the welding on the sides. Looks like the jaws are the hardened inlay type. Shame because it's a pretty beefy vise that would of been nice otherwise. It's a Rex #70 the 0 has been ground off here's a bunch of pics. I started to brush it. Think I'll just throw it into the sand blaster. Uncover more bad.
Drivesitfar: it does have a stop for the different teeth like yours. But it also has holes on the sides.

BRO: WOW it looked a little rough from your website/ad picture, but that old boy has been to WAR. nice thing about it is that it probably would work as is if you make a stand for it or grind off the raised area that is threaded under the base. for the price you paid you at least look like you have a nice old screw and vise nut combo you can use on another vise if you don't want to keep or fix the broken parts you have.

This is where my works van comes in useful, it normally full of tools and materials so a greasy dirty vice is no problem, the carpet scrap stops things sliding about. There are advantages to being a builder.

That is really rough but $20 is parts vice money or it will make a useful welding vice as is.
Thanks guys. I'm going to clean it up a little. I think I'll build a stand for it. But I'll make a hole in the stand for the threaded part to slip into. Who knows might find a base one day. Or like you guys said use as parts on another vise. Maybe that handle will fit my old craftsman vise the handle was shot on.

Brides,
IMO: The welding job may look ugly, but it looks solid. The cracked slide is an easy fix. KM Scott posted good information on how to do that. Either here or on the Vise Repair 101 thread. That vise would have great value as a welding vise or a service truck vise.

Bobioz, Prentiss had several brands.---Somewhere on here we had a list of all the different brands produced by Prentiss.---Pretty interesting stuff.---Here is a Rex combination vise, and a link to some Prentiss chart history.---Prentiss info comes up first, then it kind of transitions into different brands of vises.

So how do you guys date and rate some of the Craftsman stuff. Obviously a lot of it can't be very old ...I wouldn't guess they're as vintage as me :D

Noticed a vendor at the Flea Mkt has had a decent 4 1/2 Craftsman vise for sale for a few weeks now. 391.5186. Very clean, and really just some surface rust on the chromed parts (main handle and swivel) and the paint is faded. Nothing is bent, jaws are good shape. Didn't look very used just probably sat in in unheated garage/workshop most of its life. At the very least would think it would be a useful general everyday vise for somebody.
.
I do recall seeing some similar looking browsing these many photos so I thought I ask.

I've read Prentiss made a Rex vise. It even has the signature cracked slide. I'd save the screw and nut and cut my losses. Everybody buys a dud now and then.
Honestly I was going to say the Rex has a lot of common features with some prentiss vises. Especially there early combination vises.

Wrapped up my stand today. over 300 lbs so I had to use a chain fall to get it on the ground. With a vise it will be close to 500 lbs with out adding any sand or filler in the lower hex.

Also sharing a few cool vise pics from a good friend in Texas. Anyone need a drawing on a Reed 406 swivel lock pin then PM me.

A little vise **** from Poland and a pretty nice Dawn 3 OS side vise from Australia.
