Key turns freely in lock - doesn't enngage bolt.

Don't know if this is broken, working correctly, or an "undocumented feature"...

Just got a security screen installed. When I insert the key it turns freely without engaging the bolt or turning the inside turn knob when turning the key.

But, I found that there is a slight detente/spring action, and if I push the key a little further in, then it works.

Also, the bolt comes partway out after a full turn, then fully out after another full turn

Are these some 'features' the way it's suppose (supposed?) to work?

Should be a bar or a cam on the lock cylinder to engage the lock, take it apart & see what is going on.

Call them back to fix it.

That sounds like you have a copied or cut key that is not fitting into the lock as the original key should. Specially if you have to move it like that to make it work.

commercial locks often require a couple turns to fully extend/retract a bolt, but only 2 turns usually, that is defective

definitely calling them to have it fixed. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some special feature that you have to push it in just a little bit further so it has that spring tension against it before it works.

Just to clarify again. If I push the key just a little bit more, so I feel a little spring tension, and hold it like that it seems to work okay. This was their response....


Because of the nature of the locks and for security, when using the key, you must make sure it is pushed in all the way to activate a pin that will release the lock plunger. As for the inside thumb turn, it is an added security measure that all locks turn twice to fully engage the lock. In other words, one full turn throws it half way, the second full turn completely throws it."

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with it. It does work, kind of, as she described, but still hit or miss if you turn the key. - more like an old worn out lock that you have to jiggle just right to get it to work. She said she'll schedule service to look at it.

I called Kwikset and they said that neither of the 2 issues mentioned should be happening. The door company said that it was not actually a Kwikset model, but rather, a model made overseas for all Phoenix door companies, then the internal are made to be compatible with Kwikset, or whomever.

Anti picking feature. Would require the lock to be picked twice before the door would open.

If so how does the same key work in another lock ?
