I can see building something like that if
you live in the back country
have the ingredients in your scrap heap
and don't see used ones in your neck of the woods too often
and oh yeah, you're tight for cash.

But otherwise that thing has too large a foot print and weighs a ton. I can wait for a factory one on cl.

building tools like that used to be somewhat common. back in the 40's an 50's, there were lots of plans for drill presses and band saws from pipe, power hacksaws using a connecting rod, etc. just check out old popular mechanic mags. there was even a company that sold kits for making them out of wood, IIRC...sometimes it's fun to make something functional from junk. eventually, most of us get over it...LOL

yea, but the hand made one cuts larger stock and I bet it cuts straight and faster than the 50 bucks one on cl, also takes longer/better blades , I had a few bandsaws and the bigger the better .

If he didn't left the damn thing in the rain I think it's actually not such a bad deal.

I bought a shop a few years back in town.i used it for awhile then built my shop at home.so i rented it to a fella from here (indiana)he did some sort of metal print work on stainless and zinc.he moved to Michigan and still rented the shop he drove down once a month for awhile then finally stopped but paid rent for a year.might i say i think he was rich and his wife was a neurosurgeon.but any he ended up moving to florida and on the way he came by to get his stuff.he sent me a final pmt and a thank you letter stating he left some things if i wanted.so i went up to see.he left 2 list a cabinets a nice set of metal storage racks and several other usable things but the point of this point is he left me a jet liquid cooled band saw with 2 new blades!i contacted him and he just laughed and said he didnt want to load it lol.and he would buy another one.i offered to pay him and he said no way! I was to good to him.you just dont find people like that very much anymore.i tried renting again but got a bunch of yahoos so i was able to sell the property.i dont go up there anymore so i dont see what it looks like now lol.

Did anyone else notice in the third picture?

The drive wheel that the blade rides on, looks like a flywheel from a engine.

That's the starter gear there, I imagine there's one flywheel front and back for blade drive wheels.

Not all of us get over it - some of the summer's projects, (with several more in the works):

The bandsaw is one of favourite tools when it comes to cutting steel. Eliminates all the sparks, dust and fumes of chop saw or grinder. If that one cuts straight save you a trip to HF

I picked up this vintage Gilliom-Gil-Bilt- 18" band saw kit project a while back. I plan to clean it up and use it for metal. The rust is from sea air and doesn't go into the bearing surfaces. I'll replace the wood shrouds with metal.

These were advertised in popular mechanics after the war and on for 25 years or so. There is more info on them here and elsewhere on the net:
