New 2115TiMAX intermittently won't tighten

As the title says, I have an air impact wrench that intermittently won't tighten. Sometimes when I have it on a bolt that is tight but not finally tight and try to tighten on it it, the impact will just put air out of the exhaust but won't transmit any torque to the anvil or anything. But if I take the wrench off the bolt (take a load off of it) and pull the trigger it'll turn freely. After I do that, I can generally put it back on the bolt and tighten it just fine. This happens regularly enough that it's pretty annoying.

I just recently (within the last month or so) got the impact so I feel like it's too early for this kind of stuff. It's been doing it since I got the thing. Was hoping it would "break in" but no luck. Otherwise it's a great tool.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this and how I could fix it?

My best guess . It's gummed up (rotor vanes are not sliding freely) OR the motor end plate is worn and it has put a tiny embedded spot of metal on the end of the rotor from that end plate, causing it to not want to turn because it's dragging into the end plate. You could try running some Marvel air tool oil through it, or some ATF. Otherwise take it apart and look for wear on that end plate, if so, it involves some very careful looking for the metal on the rotor, it's extremely hard to see when it is there and it's all it takes to cause this. I sand it off and clean it with a fine scotchbrite on a die grinder. New end plate.

I had the same problem with an IR impact (not sure what model) It was 1 week old, bought it off the Snap On truck. Refused to give me a new one and sent in back to IR for repair!! He did give me a loaner. I get it back a month later and same ****. Traded it in at a loss, and bought the Ti model. That lasted just days past the warranty and broke the spline on the vane section of the motor. No one would sell me that part I had to ship it to a repair center. So I bought a new Ti gun and removed the part needed and returned it. Yeah petty ****** of me I know. Its been ok for 5 yrs but that is the last IR product for me. Screw them.

LOL, make sure the directional switch is depressed fully!

Check the front end, if it is not greased properly that issue does occur.

This.

Had a co-worker have this happen. Broke it down, little to no grease from the factory. Loaded it up and been great since.

Kinda ****** for IR's quality control.

There's a small grease fitting on the metal part. A round piece a couple mm wide with a little hole in the middle. It uses a needle fitting to fill. They usually aren't greased. I used mine for about 4 years before I knew about it. Only times I've had the issue you're talking about is when the button wasn't all the way in. It's easy to bump it a little & it disengages.

I got the tool through AWD, and price right now is $40 higher than what I paid so it's probably worth my time to try and make this one work than it is to pay $50 to get another open box one, or another $60 to get a NIB one.

I'll try and see if I am bumping the direction selector out. I did notice it was out one of the times I encountered this issue, but all the other times I've checked I don't recall it being out.

It's too bad they don't pay attention to this forum. :)

Does IR really not pay any attention at all to GJ or is my sarcasm detector just broken? I always appreciate when manufacturers or reps frequent the forum even though we can be pretty tough on them at times. You wouldn't know anything about that at all would you Marlin?

So, this is a new wrench then? If you grab the anvil and turn it, is it free? I've seen many 2135ti max's where that hammer housing bushing wasn't pushed in all the way and the hammer cage was dragging it hard, causing a whole lot of issues when you pull the trigger. Seen lots of assembly issues with the 2115timax as well, notably the clip for the inlet bushing not locked into the slot because they used one too many washers on it, and the snap ring for the inlet valve not put in right causing it to fly apart under pressure. Nothing is a surprise with their assembly methods to me at this point. It's about as bad as HF air tools at this point.
