Did a Google search on Garage Journal but came up empty. Does anyone know of a paint code to match Makita blue? My son used a Makita MAC5200 compressor. He is a roofer and used the compressor and put it up wet. It developed an air leak and he didn't have time to mess with it. I got the compressor and found the pressure switch was leaking air. I have one ordered and will repair the compressor. I have a 5 HP compressor in my shop and don't need this one. I figured I would give it to my brother.
The paint is pretty rough on it so I would like to make it a bit more presentable.
Looking for a paint code for mixed paint to spray, not rattle can.
I know I can take it in and hopefully get it matched. Just thought I would see if anyone has already done that.

I think I would just take it in to a real paint store like sherwin williams and have them match it.

Back in the day you could buy Delta paint in quarts and rattle cans. I repainted the base on a band saw. Did you check with Makita. They may offer it, too. Parts and service is in Dayton, NJ. If that fails, matching at a good paint store should not be too hard but be sure to find a place that can mix it using a good industrial paint. I don't know if you can get any better than latex in the big box stores.

I am not sure paint codes work that way. Car paint codes translate to actual mixing formulas supplied by the paint manufacturers. You might even have a shot with farm machinery but finding a paint manufacturer that has bothered to formulate a mix for Makita seems unlikely, except for Makita's actual supplier. It is either Makita or the computer at the paint store.

Bring a small sample of the paint to a paint store, and see if they have a RAL color chart.

I've seen different RAL colors specified for the blue Makita uses. RAL 5021, RAL 5018, RAL 5009, RAL 5007, and RAL 5015 may all be possibilities depending on what tool, and whether the item has a painted surface or is plastic. Makita used to use other colors as well in the past.

I had never heard of RAL so I looked it up. It is not a brand but a color standardizing system , used in Europe. How does that help in th US. Do you know of a US company that can translate that info. to a mixed paint?

The RAL color system is one of the major color systems. Major paint retailers may be able to cross-maych RAL colors with other systems they may use. The colors might not be identicle, but they should be close. This website lets you cross-match colors between the RAL systems and Pantone C color system, which is another major color systems.

Again this more European color charts. Do they actually give mix info?
It is far simpler to start from scratch and bring a piece from the compressor and get it scanned in the paint store. We are not trying to match a panel on a show car here. It is an air compressor in a garage.Anything close and nobody would know the difference. My body shop told me that some companies like Hyundai often don't even match the standard mix very well and have to be custom mixed to match the rest of the car.

Many & most can...I know most powder coaters stock RAL colors...

Again this more European color charts. Do they actually give mix info?

It has nothing to do with European/US/Etc... RAL/PMS is a color STANDARD system... JD Green, Coca-Cola Red, Pepsi Blue, Milwaukee Red, DeWalt Yellow, etc.. are all RAL/PMS Colors. The only people who use "Paint codes" are automotive refinishers refinishing factory paint jobs.

For people IN the industy, RAL/PMS is the way to go when doing colors..its a STANDARD.

So yes, most paint shops CAN cross PMS/RAL Colors to a formula they can mix...

The beauty of RAL/PMS is its a standard...I know I much prefer to work with the RAL/PMS colors...

OK I stand corrected What is the formula for the gold that Sears used on their King Seeley supplied stationary power tools in the 5Os. Just kidding. I am sure it does not go back that far but I am restoring an old jointer and wish I could match the color. It is a gold color but not metallic.

rustoleum lagoon is almost a dead match. not sure if it's available sans spray tho

Ok, an update on this thread. Mr. The Cobbler, I took your advice and took a look at Rustoleum Lagoon blue. Extremely close match. Initially I wanted something from a paint store that would involve catalysts for strength of film versus rattle can, but then realized that my brother would be pretty easy on the finish coat.
I have to say that I am very impressed with the Rustoleum spray can paint. Very easy to spray and actually looks very good. One of the parts is the original paint and I cannot tell the difference. And I am very discerning concerning color.
Toughness of finish coat still to be determined, but I don't think my brother will be a good test of toughness. More likely resistance to multiple wax coats and polishing..
Anyway, thank you The Cobbler for your suggestion of the Lagoon Blue.
