Here's a 8 1/2 inch prentiss for sale. He says it came out of the Pan Am shop out of the MIA when they shut down. Jaw towers are pretty rough and the slide is cracked like most prentiss vises. I made an offer but he wont budge from $500. Which I think is kind of high considering the condition of the vise. With shipping that would be too much for me.

I'm getting close to my unicorn ! I bought this Parker No. 82 .... The same 80 series as my coveted "86" . No way I was letting this slip away. It's not mint. missing one original jaw pin and the under the bench hardware. I grossly over paid but I may never have another chance at one of these.

Pretty cool vise Tops, pretty old. A bench pipe vise. I am guessing the 3 pipe jaw blades were the first of it's kind.

I'm going to try to do some patent research on it to figure that out. research isn't my strong suit, heck the internet isn't but maybe I'll enlist some help from some friends.

imo, I don't believe the slide is cracked. Except for the front of the dynamic tower it actually looks to be in pretty good shape, once again imo. Rev. Kev makes P58 jaws, I bet it would clean up surprisingly nice. There are only so many over 8 inch vises out there, for someone local that doesn't have to contend with shipping, I don't think its a bad deal.

EDIT: Now I see what you're talking about re: the cracked slide, right at the very end. Not terrible if it is one, but that defintely would drive the price down one would think.

I really didn't even want to give twenty for the craftsman (it's really rough), but I figured it's at least worth parts and who knows how often I'll run across one..
Really excited to play with the fpu and clean it up, looks like a very nice vise..

My son, that's every penny that Craftsman is worth...

Reverend Scott might be able to save it, by cutting all the weld off, and removing the jaws... He would have to whittle up a new set, but that wouldn't be too difficult given his machinery and skills...

If I was you, I'd PM him, and seek his wise counsel...

I don't know what you do about the missing piece on the dynamic jaw...Maybe Reverend Scott could make a "Wrap Around Jaw" or something...

If it was a 5197/8, it might be worth the investment, but I don't know about a 5191...

Good luck...

Twenty bucks isn't ridiculous money for a "Parts Vise..."

Heres some extra pictures he sent me. He didn't believe it was cracked either until I pointed it out to him.

You will love that FPU and that was a hell of a deal.

The $20 you spent on the Craftsman is worth it so you don't have to jack up the FPU and it is still better then the **** they sell at HF.

Cool hatchet just don't have to many of those highballs and cut yourself.

72: you are sniffing out the good ones, but that 5191 has seen WAY TOO MANY HAMMERS. too bad the owner was such a good welder and didn't want to use a chunk of his RR track which he obviously owned. as said before the FPU will maybe be one of your favorites and let us know how you like it. also congrats on becoming an Eagle Scout.

Meatsis: with the cold weather hitting your part of the country and hurricane season maybe almost over am i hearing ROAD TRIP? not that you NEED another big vise, but you might need a little of Florida's 80 degree weather in November and December.

ALL: pretty good examples of why I (WE) don't recommend beating on your vises with HAMMERS and plenty of examples on the vise repair 101 thread. sure you can use a vise to do some bending and hammering, but always within reason if you do because it wasn't built for that. get a press and a chunk of RR track and you can at least start the bend on it or get to know the guys at the local fab shop and bring them a little cash or gift and have them use their machines that were made for bending.

Anyone ever seen one of these Parker 3/0x vises. 3.25" jaws. Super clean. Seems to be an 1800s vise. Super smooth action and has the spring around the main screw to aid opening. Paid $40. The best part is I picked it up in Meriden, CT!

$40 is good deal for that vise. Wasn't he asking $100?

Yes I think so. Then he dropped it to $50 so I made an offer.

Thanks for picking it up. I can at least use it for parts. Good buys all around! Too bad I got busy working this morning and I missed you since you pretty much drive by my house.

So I found this thread and Garage Journal recently from another forum that had a thread about looking for a vise. Some one referenced this thread and posted the link to it. So after reading some here about vises, I decided to look for a used vice, probably USA made, rather than one of the questionable imports. All I can say is that GJ members are a bunch of enablers and trouble makers with all these threads on shop builds, equipment, tool boxes, 1930's garage restorations, electrolysis, etc. So I stop by a rummage sale today that had tools listed in the ad, hoping I might find something worthy of GJ thread or a vise. Most of the stuff was so so, dirty and rusted with high prices. I did find a vice though, and should have looked closer at it, but the price scared me for what I saw. I figured I would just check with you folks and get your thoughts. The tag said it was a Chicago Morgan No. 35, 3 and 1/2" jaws. The entire vise was rust and filthy like most of the tools there. I'm not opposed to giving it an electrolysis bath and cleaning it up, but I though I would get the collective thoughts of the vise masters here first. They were asking $100.00 for it which I think is way to much. What are your thoughts as to a fair price assuming that nothing broken and jaws that will clean up?

Blackwolf: i bet you could do better in both size and price than a 3.5 inch rusted up Morgan. if you have a little time and patience or get to know one of us that lives in your area i know your vise needs will be soon filled. feel free to post up some pictures of a vise you find even if you don't buy it cause anytime we hear of a 50+ year old vise it's always nice to see a picture.

great first post on the thread and sounds like you already know where this might be going with your funds in your wallet. words of warning are not enough and just know that you might never see another benjamin in your wallet that isn't already spent on some quality tools.

welcome

Joe: so is the VISE VAULT FULL YET?? i know you are the VISEMAN, but do you always need to buy one a day? speaking of which did you really buy 2 Reed 4C's last week even thought one was a missing a few parts? i don't think we saw nearly enough pictures of those big REEDS so can you post up a few more. PLEASE!!!!

Blackwolfe, Morgan is good old American iron of which I am very partial, they're not Reeds, but they are in my top five favorites.---That said, it is really hard to make a proper assessment having never seen the vise in question.---If it is in really good condition other than the dirt and rust, meaning no abuse, tight, with pristine jaws, and swivel base, it's probably worth the $100.00.---At least according to EBay prices.---But I'm betting it's not in that good of a working condition.---I'd try to get the price reduced, or be patient and watch for a better deal.---Personally, I'd get a good vise with wider jaws.---You will eventually get one anyway.;)

Got this Wilton out of the etank. It's pretty rough but i was able to drill out the broken screw and jaw pin fairly easy. Needs a little metal work then it will get a coat of hammer it's light blue.

I want to get more pics up, I'll try this weekend. Sorry for the confusion, only ONE Reed 4C was acquired this week and I got a beautiful, perfect Parker 976 yesterday. Shop is packed! I will say my back is killing me. I carried my 200lb Fisher anvil around yesterday. Oh, and Meatsis, you are right, it is a Prentiss 19.

Here is my restored Wilton 645. Had to replace the jaws that weren't reproduced by Wilton so I ordered 5" jaws that "beef" up the look. Drilled and tapped holes to make them fit---Gunmetal Gray was the original color but I had to paint orange and blue for the Florida GATORS. Works flawlessly. Great vise as it came with the bench off CL. Can't find my before pics...

Hey, can anyone tell me what the name/type of bolt is used for the swivel lockdowns that use the wrench? Like on Parkers. I need to get one for the P98.

Not mine but a Reed 106 I just saw at an antique shop. Listed at $325 I think. It's worth it but way out of my budget right now.

Found a interesting vise it's marked Colborne mfg co Chicago and also acme 10. I'm not sure if Colborne made it in Chicago or acme made it for them? I've never personally seen another garter like this vise uses. If anyone has any information or just some thoughts I'm ready to listen. Oh and the jaws are 3 1/4 wide and the green paint that's on it in some areas could be the original from my inspection of the vise.

I stopped at an estate sale on the way home today and was shocked that this little Wilton 935 was still there! The date stamp was 7/51, but it didn't have the GUAR EXP part on it.

Thank you. I found it on ebay and I ended up being the only bidder. The vise came from Chicago so I don't know if it might have just been a vise they used in the factory or if it was a mass production piece.

Here is a size comparison picture of the Colborne to the rock island. That's 5in to a 3 1/4. I thought the picture was funny so I figured I would share it.
