Time to join the GJ vise obsession. Got a Wilton 8-643 1/2, a very common model. Well used, but a good restoration candidate. Paint in a hidden area appears to be dark gray. What's a good match? Best of all, it was free. Similar in size to my Craftsman 891-5180 which has served me well for decades.

You could always update the color with the verde green. The older 643s were grey and the newer ones were the famous wilton green/blue color.

Good luck either way, they are great vises. (Wilton combos are definitely top 5 must haves for me)

Has anyone tried to replace a missing or ground off raised letter/number? Anyone know of any kind of molds (arts & crafts stores?) to make a letter that could be glued on? Or any other ideas?

FMC: I had an idea you may want to try. Why don't you see if you can have the letters and/or numbers you need 3-D printed? I don't know enough about it to say that it would work but I know enough to say it just might work.

Had a super morning today. Wasbin upstate MA buying an anvil and decided tovstop in Ayhol MA, home of Starret tools c and Athol anvils. Here are pics.

1st pic is of original Athol factory. Really falling apart. Next is the Starret factory, a very busy place even today. 3rd is a 6' brass sign. Just tons of history!

Of course I had to pic shops while in Athol. Found this 4" Athol beauty 1 mile from the factory. Pd 75. Just so happy to find this. Met a clean out guy who has a ton of vises and will hook up soon.

I have to say, I got a good deal in the two, cause I wanted a power-arm anyway.

VA: i might keep that vise on that powerarm cause it looks like they married nicely.

ALL: Bluebolt offered up his NOS Starrett 3.5 inch 623.5 vise a few months ago and i was happy to buy it from him. how often can you help a member turn a vise into car parts and get an old new condition vise. WIN WIN.

any idea when Starrett actually last produced a vise? i can't recall if we have talked about Athol Starrett's history here, but maybe somebody has a clue. no paperwork in original box either.

I wonder if the Sawyer double swiveler parts fit the Fulton?
I have a Sawyer that has a crack where the slide meets the dynamic...

I finished this one about the same time as the Universal Machinists' Vise. Those two were the reason I posted two palm sized converted clamp-ons sometime back. I needed a change of pace. The green one is a Lehigh by Bonney and the red one is a Victor Jersey Stanley 745.

I think I forgot to post this here, little fpu I picked up a while back is cleaned and ready to use.. Got a lot of over spray off of it to reveal original paint so no big resto..

I like this vise a lot bit not sure I'll keep it

Oh yeah, do you guys think that's original paint? The nut and the rest of the vise are different colors

I picked a pair of vise's today. The post vise is a Arthur J. O' Leary & son. These were made between 1903 and 1943 in Chicago . I found that many of these were sold through Wards.
The second one I found is a small #30 AS. Now I know it's just a lil' open screw vise and they don't get much love on here but, this one is a bit special... at least to me. Having seen and owned many AS vise's , and I mean MANY! This is the first one I have ever seen with the original paper label still partially in tact. Now my question to you guys is does any one have an image of a complete label? I searched the net , granted my research skills very much **** , but found nothing. I would love to have a bunch of these label made if I could find the image .

That's a great looking FPU. Based on mine, I believe that it's the original paint. You may regret getting rid of it.

Was checking out the Fulton on page 2290 that PghJKB linked to, and noticed it was a combination table vise, swivel head, mine is not.


But I also saw one of those Charles Parker #94s like Zoomie picked up the other day.---Looks like it belongs to Fl18guy.---Looks pretty good to.---Post 45786 for now.

I've never seen one that looked like a hammerhead shark. I clicked on it and saw it was made in the USA, lifetime warranty and 65,000 psi instead of 30,000 like most others. Even though I wasn't sure what the psi meant, I was pretty sure it was better (I joined here just to ask what it meant). After all, it does have a lifetime warranty! Yost had it listed as a $455 vice. After haggling Lowes, I walked out the door with this vice for $245.

Material strengths are measured in psi or kpsi. The higher the value, the better the material can withstand stress before breaking. Google "Ultimate Strength of Materials". Cast irons have tensile strengths in the range of ~ 20-120 kpsi.

The other day I picked up a 125mm Bison Knock Off vise. Form a distance it looked like the real thing. Being a huge fan of Bison vises, My heart raced...until I got closer. What looked like a Bison 1250 series, turned out to be an Asian or East Indian copy.

However, the vise was in great shape. The seller wanted 20$ for it, we agreed on 10$.

Below are some pictures to compare the Bison KO vise with a Bison 1250-80 vise:

First 2 pictures: The knock off will not have a date code & Bison logo stamped on top of the moving jaw, like the real vise has.
3rd. & 4th picture: The handle end of the real Bison vise will have "POLAND" stamped on it.
5th & 6th pictures: The knock off vise jaw face serrations are shallow compared to the jaw face of the real vise.

The overall shape and handles of the 2 vises are similar. This vise will make a good one for someone who doesn't need a "top shelf" heavy duty vise. Also it will be a good "back-up" or welding vise.

Morale of this story: look closely before you buy.

Yep! 7" on the "front" and 11" if reversed. I like the pipe jaws too. There's 1 set, but they act as 2. I think I can clamp between 3/8" and 4" (?) and they're removable.

Interesting: I have a 6 inch with the date code on the jaws and quality is superior better then Wilton but no POLAND on the handle. Still has some of decal left also. Looks like and original to me.

It ain't massive but it's a PARKER and it's Stylin' I just got this Parker 83 from a CL ad. It was listed for a couple of weeks but I never quite pulled the trigger. When he lowered the price to $15 I had no choice except to buy it. Right?
