JW: a 6 inch Rock Island weighs 150 pounds so guessing an 8 incher weighs about 250 or so. are #98's 8 inch wide jaws?

ALL: picked up a nice wood bench with a good little wood vise on it that works a bit different than most. you put the dynamic jaw in a slot and just screw in and out.

also picked up this no name red 2 inch jaw vise with a mini wing nut. it looks like maybe there was a hold drilled in the dynamic but i bought it anyway cause liked the look.

That bench is fantastic very interesting vise with it.

As for the babies, since there is no FPU on them [never found any on mine], and they are a conventional front moving jaw vise, I think it best to call them "Baby Bison-Bial" or, for lazy people like me, Baby Bison.

I have a clamp-on "baby bison" type vise. It has 1.5" jaws with the front jaw fixed and the rear jaw moving. The main difference between the baby and the larger FPU vises is the large vise has set screw adjustable gibs so you can adjust the dovetail slide fit. The small clamp-on FPU vise has the machined dovetails, but without adjustment. They are a pretty tight fit though. It has no makers mark in the casting, but a "made in Poland" sticker. The finish is more of a metalic grey/silver.

I would post photos but I can not locate it at the moment. I searched Google for a photo of the vise but I cannot find one.

Then I guess mine is not a baby Bison ... it has a front moving dynamic like a Wilton. Here are all the markings I could find. There is a REALLY faint one on the bottom of the flat on the bottom of the swivel, not the base but on the vise bottom itself. Super faint and hard to see, but it looks stamped versus engraved by someone. Seems to say Bokos or Pokos, I can't make out the smaller text below that.20161105_155706.jpg20161105_155750.jpg20161105_155640.jpg20161105_155037.jpg20161105_155449.jpg20161105_153934.jpg

Always Top-Notch Specimens VA, I'd love to see the whole collection one of these days... You are like the "Howard Hughes" of Vises, LOL!:lol_hitti

Take Care VA!
ZOOM

Zoomie, I agree, seeing VA's collection would be impressive. But coming from you, isn't that like the pot & the kettle?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_pot_calling_the_kettle_black

I am sure your collection would be most impressive also, all the Stevens, mini Prentiss, vast Wilton collection...and now that beautiful Dawn you just got. :beer: (I suspect that GET might be in the two of yours company also).

I think no one comes close to Demoman for the big boys, but for shear numbers and different brands & styles, VA, yourself, and GET have shown off some mighty fine collections.....cheers! (Probably missed one two other fine collections; haven't seen BigCaddy in some time)

One of the members (I don't remember which one) did a survey last year of how many vises GJ members owned. Does anyone remember the exact results? Maybe it's time to redo the survey and it's about time for FAVORITE VISE OF 2016 too.

All,
There can be a wide variety of categories in a vise beauty pageant.
* Largest quantity of vises.
* Most unique vise.
* Best homemade vise.
* Best restoration.
* Restoration with biggest transformation from blob of rust to gem.
* Most complex restoration.
* Largest & smallest.
* And so forth.

Then there can be vise use categories: Benchtop, pipe, machinist, drill press, woodworking, blacksmith, leather working, pin, saw sharpening, and many more.

I forgot to mention best repurposing and folk art created from broken vises.

This is just my opinion but i would mean best benchtop vise collection. I really dont get into any other vises than these. Drill press vises,woodworking vises,and pipe vises all look the same as each other in there specific class IMO. I always thought benchtop vises had the most character because of the various styles and craftsmanship.

Speaking of minis I just got this pair in the mail today. Both of the vises are 2 1/2in jaw the model numbers 180 (15lbs) and the 210 (12lbs) . The combination one is my favorite of the pair to be honest because you don't see many of the Blake Prentiss models.

Ahhh... So you got that little Prentiss #180!
Well bought, I thought I might get that one a little cheaper, but you got me...
Well done, cool vise!:thumbup:

Take care!

Who has the best collection of vises in here? I assumed it was K.Scott. Anyone else got more?

Having spoken to Kevin about it a little bit, I don't think his collection would be near the top. He told me he knows of some folks with ridiculous collections that you never hear about.

Honestly, I don't think most of the people with the biggest collections post here at all. They might be members, but you're not going to see them post about it.

Even within Benchtop there are many categories and sub catagories: Machinest, Shop, Mechanics, rotating head, Homeowners, Clamp-on, Fixed base, swivel base, Suction cup, power-Arm and variants...

The there are Workmates, Jawhorse, Gunsmith jewelers and technicians vises (Like the Panavises)

Bcom,
IMO, all vises should be considered.
I couldn't use a bench top vise to properly hold a piece of steel on my mill. Another example: An Emmett turtle back, woodworking vise is on the top shelf of vises.

Can we include a "Razzies" (worst vise) category? ;)

I just googled the address. There's only houses there now. :(
If it were a building there id be tempted to go look around.

HAHA! I did the same thing earlier. Just a bunch of duplex housing it looks like now. Hard to believe there was a business there :)

There are two pearl streets in the Boston area.

First one is the duplex you mentioned which is old enough to be from 1915. It's north of the city in Charlestown which looks like it's been residential forever.

Second one is here in downtown. I suspect this is the original location. Downtown, center of commerce and all that. Replaced with skyscrapers and other modernity post-war.

Ah stupid Google tricked me.
Like you said though it's gone anyway .
It looks like they were a pretty big outfit to have that many vises in stock.

VA: maybe you should build some shelves like the place had on Pearl Street for all your Chain gang. that would be some COLOR PICTURE that is for certain. Got any old growth wood laying around to make some shelving?

Mark: since you have a list in mind how about you starting a vise of the year voting for 2016? maybe we can all put our favorites in and vote for the ones of others that were different, interesting or rare. i'll help if you need some cause we started this last year after new years and it didn't draw a lot of interest and would maybe do better with catagories at the beginning instead of later or towards the end.

ALL & Boatman: here's a few more pictures of my new wood table and wood vise that Carla thinks is from the 1900-1920's. i tend to agree since the legs are bolted together with square headed screws and pretty cool old design if you ask me. also the vise is pretty interesting and if anybody knows more about this simple table with wood vise i'm going to start a thread in vintage with more pictures so post up over there if you want to.

If you build a modern version of the 1915 shelves, use old growth lumber or increase the dimensions of the boards to account for the reduced strength of modern lumber.

Has anyone estimated the amount of weight on those shelves?

I do not know the number of vises any particular member has, but I know that fellas like VA, Zoomie, and pretty sure Getridaone also, when they get a vise, it is to keep.

KMScott, Autopts, and more recently Joe Striper, Bagged and a few others, come across many vises, but restore and sell many of them. They are vise afficionados and have a "private cellar" collection of ones they want to keep, but my guess (uneducated one at that) would be they don't have anything near the guys that are strictly collectors.

In the past there have been a few others like Bigcaddy, Catalize and a few others I am forgetting; and I could be way off base with this but I would think that the number of people that have more than VA and Zoomie are a small number.

Zoomie is worried about his friends and family.---I got a wife that can only see the outer crust of 6 big piles and I have enough trouble downplaying that.---If I stretch them all out and start counting, and she sees it, I've got to get a lawyer and start divvying everything up.---Worst of all, I 've got to give her half of my vises.:sad:

If you remember the story of old King David, who took a census of how many subjects he had, he paid a terrible toll for that.---When you go to counting, bad things happen.---Bad things! :evil:

I agree with G-manBart, The guys with the monster collections, you will never hear from.---They have nothing to prove and a lot to hide.

The wood in that bench isn't old growth.

99: i didn't think the little wood bench was old growth either and my Gramps was a logger from 1926 to 1993 so i know a little bit about wood. hard for me to say really how old it is, but the hardware is definitely from the pre WWII or maybe WWI era.

VA: i hear you about putting things all in one spot hence my storage units. i was thinking you make a mine shaft and put the shelf and chain gang in there and tell your bride there are big spiders and snakes in there. then she'll never go inside. :beer:

We were talking about the peral street Vise shelves pic, not Drives bench.

Drives. you mentioned using that bench for you chop saw? May I suggest you put a section of ply on it using the bench dog holes and use the ply for mounting the saw? No new holes for that bench is the point.

Heck, you might be able to just use a bench dog or two and that cool old vise to anchor the saw.

Have you figured out how the jaw raises up to clamp above the top surface to utilize the bench dogs?

Just finished up this little guy. He followed me home from a previous place of employment. It was mounted to a bench in a back store room, never used much and we were replacing all the old vises with crappy Wilton imports:mad:. Pretty heavy duty for a 3". The Date is stamped on there, 1943.
Painted it to match my Yost, no plans for it but to sit on a shelf for now.
