Sorry Drive.---Total weight award goes to Demo hands down.---Within the ones that post here at least.

I second that, unless some one is lying in the weeds (and they'd have to be some pretty damn deep weeds!) DEMO wins hands down, IMO.

I don't have anything as cool (or large) as many here, but I'll share...

I recently bought a Morgan 140 and a Chas. Parker 874 from a friend whose selling off his dad's machine shop. They've been used hard for a long time, but are fully functional, just covered in decades of grease and machine shop funk. I cleaned the off the majority of the funk from the Morgan and gave it a full service. I like the patina, so I'll probably just use it the way it is. Not sure what I'll do with the Parker.

Those recent purchases got me searching around the internet for more information. That led me to this thread. I've seen the thread before, but never followed along. I also found a few other helpful threads around here. Reading all these great posts about all the enthusiasm for vises, got me thinking about all the vises I have that I haven't really been using. So, I drug them all out for a family photo.

Just so it doesn't feel left out, here's my Wilton WS6. I feel a bit odd posting this one with all the great vises in this thread, but it is what it is:

Here's some more pictures of the Chas.Parker and the Morgan.

More pictures of the last one, please?
Certainly!

I've had this vice for over 15 years, I got it when we cleaned out my grandfather's basement. He didn't have it mounted to anything. It's a bit rough and could use cleaned up. It seems like the base has had a repair done.

I don't see any obvious company names, coo, or even part number.

Interesting... the rear jaw being dynamic one would almost think bison bial or leinen.

Can you check if there are traces of the word Poland on the handle nut (may have to take off some paint)

The handle design with the small knobs is also reminiscent of York or bb

Screw: first of all nice handle and Avatar!! yep that white one does look European for sure so wondering if maybe your gramps brought it back from WWII? some of the guys across the pond might know more about it, but you might take a few minutes to wire wheel off all the white paint and see if you can find any #'s or names on it. also if you do that have some wax or BLO handy to wipe on it to keep it from rusting. your Wilton looks like it's ready to work and the bench it is sitting on looks pretty nice too. WELCOME and nice looking vise family with a lot of variety.

VA: i know Demo has a few tons, but if you take a look around i bet you are not too far behind him. if Sandman didn't keep buying anvils as big as a house i bet he's got more than a few big ones sitting around just like Meatsis and a few others. since you are like me where you don't have them all in one spot i bet it would be hard for you to count them, but like FMC and others have said if a rare vise shows up here you normally have one or two of them to post up a few pictures of to show the member what that vise should look like. i'm guessing you love the Hunt like i do more so than the complete process like Top mentioned?

TOP: one of these days i'll make time to spiff up a few of mine to sell, but i do like passing on farm fresh quality vises to GJ members when i get the chance to so i know what you mean. i still like the HUNT the best and the drive home with a new vise family member in the back. i'm still waiting to see my first big 250+ pounder in person.

ALL: speaking of collections JOE has only posted up a few of his and the rate he buys vises this past year i bet he's not only filled up his garage, but maybe a couple storage units this year. any pictures JOE of the vises waiting to get spiffed up or are you still busy with the 8 incher you bought from Meatsis and all those anvils you keep finding?

BCom: 100% Norwegian and yes born in America if that matters and hoping to see Norway (and a 250+ pound vise) before i pass on to that big tool room in the sky that hopefully has more room than my 10x15 garage does. my bride is a Californian and has some Irish in her so i couldn't keep the 100% alive without marrying a relative, but she's a keeper.

check out my profile and you'll see why i picked that name and for those of you that already didn't know it's my Ebay handle too, but i haven't bought or sold much if anything on there in years, but i probably should or move so i can quit paying storage fees.

ALL: so i moved maybe 2000 pounds of tools so i could move 4 huge flat files 2 inches to get this little wood bench with a wood vise in my garage yesterday. pictures to follow, but man i'm so sore i woke up at 2am. in case any if you like little wood benches with a cool old vise attached i started a thread on it cause Carla thinks it might have been made in 1900's to 1920's so post up comments over on that thread if you have any thoughts or maybe CRS has a catalog page.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343912

CRS: another shout out to you for posting up all those catalog pages on the vise history thread and on this one too. WELL DONE!!

The reason i asked is that "drivesitfar" sounds like a Native American "Indian" name and with the buffalo like picture it seemed to add t it.

To all,. Thank's for the comments on the Parker. I have started on the baby bullet I got last week. Just the two jaws on the Parker weigh more than the little bullet and pow-r arm. My back will be much happier.

I'll throw in a few shots of my storage area. First picture is a 36" saw blade vise, I know is not a bench vise but have you ever seen one ? I haven't been buying many in the last couple years so I am around 160 or so.

GET: it looks like you might need to upgrade to the commercial racking and get a few more shelves. nice stuff that is for certain and your skills at spiffing them up gets better maybe on each one. i bet your arms are sore working on the big Parker.

ok do you have a favorite or maybe a top 5 out of all those that you might never sell? it really hard for me to pick which one i like the best, but that blue Parker on the stand you built still has my vote. although i haven't seen some of these and that big one that is an open screw and has the brass ring on the back of it can you tell me (us) what that one is and it's specs cause it looks pretty big?

Well, my grandfather served the other side in WWII (not that he wanted to) and stayed in a refugee camp in Germany for several years after the war (where he met my gmom and my mom was born). From the stories I heard, not likely any tools came over on the boat with them. But, he was Polish and appreciated things from his home country, so...

Yes, the white paint needs to go. I'll update if I find anything hidden under it.

Drive, tell Bcom what Drivesitfar means.---I had to know to.

Drives: I have seen several old ads for benches while I was searching for vise stuff. I didn't save them but I'm sure I still have the PDFs for the journals they were in. I'll hunt some up for you.

p.s. I have also posted some photos on your Old Picture thread. What a great idea that was!

Drives,. That green one is a Miller Falls 7" 160 lbs. The brass piece is a repair for stripped threads. The blue one is a Flexi-Vise

VA, The guy I got it from said there was a motor driven sharpener rigged above the vise. He didn't what type of blades where sharpened on it. He said it came out of an old mill being torn down

When the lever is down, the dynamic moves freely, when you raise the handle it ratchets tight, pretty cool, like a Stephans kind of...

Drives: Well, that didn't take long. These Manual Training Workbench pictures were in the first catalog I looked in - a 1912 Simmonds "Keen Kutter" Catalog. I might have more someplace. I'll keep looking.

I'm doing more organizing in "The Sea of Tetanus", and I hope no one put any money on this, because I don't have nearly as many as some of y'all think I do...

Mark: since you have a list in mind how about you starting a vise of the year voting for 2016? maybe we can all put our favorites in and vote for the ones of others that were different, interesting or rare. i'll help if you need some cause we started this last year after new years and it didn't draw a lot of interest and would maybe do better with catagories at the beginning instead of later or towards the end.

All,

Just bought a pretty rough sawyer, but I'm pretty sure I can mostly repair it. think I have a base that will fit. Any one know the specs on the jaw inserts on a 3.5" Oswego/sawyer?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/232131363434

I will look... I have one that the slide is cracked where it meets the dynamic, what parts do you need? PM me if you like!

Take care!

Well... I did some more work tonight, as I said earlier. I still have a bunch more, but not the volume that some may think. I am kind of like the guys were talking about earlier, I have sold, given away and walked by more vises than I can count, but my family and friends are all outfitted with the finest AMERICAN IRON they could hope for! I now really just get unique and rare stuff...

Enjoy!:rocker:
