Were looking to replace out tub faucet, we have a older delta single handle with the shower valve right below the handle, then a tub faucet and below all that a shower overflow plate which controls the water stop.

All the new stuff style stuff looks like the shower on off is located on the tub faucet while mine is below the handle?

Then myou other question is do these new style still use the overflow plate and lever to fill the tub?

Wondering what needs to be done to convert mine as I don't want to put up 200 bucks to have a plumber out

You have 2 separate systems there. The tub drain & overflow are independent from the shower valve & tub spout. You don't necessarily have to change one set to change the other.

The "shower valve right below the handle" sounds like the shower valve has the diverter built in to it. The diverter is the part of the valve that chooses whether the water goes to the tub or shower.

Changing a shower valve is usually quite a bit more involved than other faucets. Often it requires opening up the wall. What is behind the valve? Can you get to it from the back side? Finding new ones to fit the opening in the tile can be tough. Why are you changing it? Sometimes you can rebuild the faucet with new guts right in place, install new chrome trim if the old looks poor, & get many more years of use from it.

What he said.

It can quickly turn into a nightmare if you don't have an access panel to get behind your shower. I had to make two separate ones in my closet directly behind the tub/shower.

If it was a quality unit it can easily be rebuilt.

Delta is usually pretty easy to repair, just use OEM, not "will fit" parts, but plumbing codes are requiring anti-scald valves if replacing, and if one's plumbing skills are weak it could get overwhelming, start early, plan ahead and post photo's of the job before starting, & there are many here willing to help.

A classic Delta shower valve is pretty compact, the type of pipe will tell how easy to replace, copper being the easiest, galvanized a bit more difficult.

It will prolly be a nightmare job you can't get a access panel in as that's the back side ofor the house. It all works fine I just wanted to update the looks on it. The chrome has started to pit , it's got to be 15 years old I'll get a picture tonight. We don't mind the style ilife I could replace it with theach same I would.

We also have a plastic 1 piece tub no tile

Call Delta warranty and tell them the chrome has failed (pitting).

The faucet has a lifetime warranty to the original owner,

You'll get the replacement handle and trim on your porch in three days, free of charge.

I would try to get it replaced like Finn said....but there are different styles that fit these from Delta as well. Take the picture to a plumbing house and they can match it to something different Delta has. Might change the look also if you want.
Keep us posted.

Did you guys look at the model I posted, looks the same but with the chrome handle I think it should go on all the same, then I can update the overflow to match

I think the problem you might have is the valve itself. The new styles use a larger valve body that won't work with the old fixture you have, that's why everyone is suggesting you open up the wall. You should be able to get Delta to warrenty the part just tell them you bought it years ago. Your other option might be new off the shelve parts. You can get trim rings, spouts and handles that should fit the old no problem. JMO and I could be completely wrong

Most of the time you will not have shut off valves for the shower. So you will have the water off for the entire house. You might be able to install new cutoff valves in the basement/crawlspace/closet so that you can still use the rest of the plumbing as you work. You are no going to find new valves that will work as well and last as long as that Delta has. Yes the newer one are anti scald but unless you have little children/grandchildren around you and your wife know when water is hot--no need for anti scald.

I really don't want to replace the plumbing as you really can't it's a townhouse and behind the shower were the pipes run is the back of house. Shifty design, I just want new chrome handle and faucet and overflow.

So it is possible to just replace the chrome parts?

I think you should be able to get the chrome parts, but I haven't had a call for one like that in awhile, so I don't know for sure. Try to find an older plumbing supply house instead of a home center. Take your pics in with you. If they don't stock it ask if they can order it. Be patient, some of those places are "wholesale only" & will give pros priority over homeowners. But if you don't make a stink most will still sell to walk-ins.

And, as mentioned above, contact Delta to see what they will do.

I'd sure try to get the parts instead of replacing the valve.

As I said in my previous post, just call Delta Warranty. They are easy to work with. You should be able to do an online search to determine the model you have. Otherwise, be prepared to fax or email a picture of your hardware to the rep.

They will send new parts either free, or with a cc payment, depending on how you answer the original owner question.

I wouldn't bother with begging at a "professional only" supply house unless absolutely necessary. I don't grovel well.

yes, just call them and get the replacement parts. The old valves like that didn't have shut off valves built into them. The new ones does. After you remove the handle and then the two screws that holds the plate on. Behind it the new one have a place you can put a flat blade screw driver and shut off the water to service the faucet. Good luck.

this is prob the most common model of shower faucet ever. I have the exact same one in my first floor shower. I actually have to repair it tomorrow, but as a surprise for the wife im going to change the handle, plate, and other bits to brushed nickel. You don't have to change the valve itself at all. If you go to home de'pot or blowes they have the up grade kits literally next to the replacement internal parts. I figure its gonna set me back 100, but score major points with the wife

I spoke with delta they don't warranty anything past 1995. My kitchen faucet is giving me issues leaking out the sprayer so I got to order a new one of those first. I think I'm going with the delta 468 in chrome it's a pull out style, with soap disp.
