I have an old buffet/hutch type piece of furniture that I am refinishing. It is approximately 45 years old and had some serious varnish on it. I sanded it down and filled some holes for new knobs and such. Any recommendations on a primer before I paint it? Also, should I seal it after painting? The wife wants it navy blue if that matters.

Not sure what type of wood it is but it is solid and heavy, like I said, it's old...

I can get a pic later.

Thanks in advance

If it wasn't painted before, I would not paint it. maybe re stain if you don't like the hue, and then varnish. If it has any value, painting, would in my opinion reduce the value. Whenever beautiful wood gets painted at my house I feel a great disturbance in the "Force". Just my humble opinion.

I agree, but I paint ponderous, wayward grained oak furniture. I hate that $#!+.

I do agree that paint would not be the best. However, what the wife wants.... The furniture was a hand me down and was just taking up space so there is no real value or loss to me.

Don't ask.
Sanding it down pretty much ended the discussion on value. Paint it as you like.
I might use a prestain sealer to reduce the grain from raising or use a thin first coat and sand it smooth.

Somehow I get the idea it was not a Chippendale breakfront to begin with. I have seen plenty of old hutches painted and they look fine. A bit of light gray in the paint will soften the navy if you want a more rustic look.
