Picked up this Athol 626 today. Missing spindle handle and swivel lock downs. It turns with one finger. Slide is in good shape. I need to clean all the paint off it.![]()

So what did you pay? Did you have to sleep with old ladies like Meatsis?

How do you rate the build quality of them compared to the chicom copies?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have never seen a broken NuTYP.---Not saying that there haven't been some, but several of the many rebranded Chicoms have shown up busted.---Mostly because people don't use good judgment when working with them.---As Clint would say, ("A Man Has Got To Know His Vises Limitations''.)
As far as comparison, no comparison!

That 974 is so clean, amazing. You are the lucky owner, and can do as you please. I would leave it as is, I don't think it could look any better if cleaned, painted or polished. Just a beautiful patina, crisp edges and no casting marks, a rare specimen.
One thing about that has me curious is the patent date, looks like 1990, but can't be, Parker and Union were long gone by then. So maybe 1890 or 1880? That can't be either, 970 series only came to be some time in the 1920"s(?).
Hard to see on that pic but the only reasonable date would be 1930?
^What kind of wood you got there?
A friend just bought a Charles Parker #206 bench vise pat. date of Nov. 22, 1910.
He hasn't been able to get the swivel lock to extend down tight enough to catch one of the position holes in the swivel base.
The base and ring are both cast stamped with the number 288 1/2
If someone who has a Parker #206 can look at the pics he sent to me and let me know what the issue is, would appreciate it.
Thanks.

Boy, I ALMOST jumped up and down an screamed Stephens at that second one, until I looked at the close up...
Cool stuff Mr. Scott, thanks!
Take care Sir!
Mike
Hey Mike, here are a few more pic's. Really neat vise's.

518X series w/506 prefix - Colombian; w/391 prefix - Japan

So there's only two sizes of this style? 3.5 and 5? That's cool because I've got one of each (sadly, one US and one Japan, respectively). Japanese tools weren't all that great back then, huh?
Nice looking vises !!!!
Can't wait to see the Parker

It's a German Peddinghaus Record vise. I don't know if it has anything to do with the British company or not.

Thanks kwoswalt, look at this gib they used for adjusting the slop. I thought it had a German touch.

I can't see the German script on the other side but I'm no expert in vises and your opinion is better than mine.
Here's the Record vise for reference, the 2nd from right; there are no gibs to adjust the play but the upper edges on the slide are slanted.
