My sawyer Oswego vise came in. It's a little rough but better than I expected.
I took it apart in about 5 minutes. Forgot to take an assembled pic. Just need a base and jaws.

How do you rate the build quality of them compared to the chicom copies?

I put my small Wilton bullet on the shelf and I am going with just one vise, this Prentiss, now. It's nice to have such a solid base to be mounted on. The bench probably weight 400 pounds, in total.

I have never seen a broken NuTYP.---Not saying that there haven't been some, but several of the many rebranded Chicoms have shown up busted.---Mostly because people don't use good judgment when working with them.---As Clint would say, ("A Man Has Got To Know His Vises Limitations''.)

As far as comparison, no comparison!

Picked up this Athol 626 today. Missing spindle handle and swivel lock downs. It turns with one finger. Slide is in good shape. I need to clean all the paint off it.:willy_nil

I agree with VA, however... I do own a NuType specimen that has a pretty clean crack where the slide meets the dynamic. No clue how it happened, but Bagged and I are going to build one good one out of it for his collection! I do own 2 great Sawyer examples in excellent condition, however.

That 974 is so clean, amazing. You are the lucky owner, and can do as you please. I would leave it as is, I don't think it could look any better if cleaned, painted or polished. Just a beautiful patina, crisp edges and no casting marks, a rare specimen.

One thing about that has me curious is the patent date, looks like 1990, but can't be, Parker and Union were long gone by then. So maybe 1890 or 1880? That can't be either, 970 series only came to be some time in the 1920"s(?).

Hard to see on that pic but the only reasonable date would be 1930?

Here is a couple neat vises from my good friend in Texas that I want to share. This Keller side clamping vise like is the Stephens, very clean.

This one is a mystery to me, maybe VA or someone else can identify it. Note the heavy chamfer, might be a German vise.

This one could be a German vise to. It looks like it is called a Schlegel. I do not know any jaw widths on any of these vises.

While I was a house guest for the month of October while hunting, we tried to disassemble my Rem700 bolt to get all the primer divots out, but my host's Asian vise would not stay parallel. I bought a vise off Ebay

VTG Columbian #143 1/2 Anvil Bench Vise 3 1/2" Jaws $30 + $16 shipping.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/272302364736?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I got some bolts and installed it on the workbench I made there two hunting season ago.

That little Columbian may be old, but the jaws stay parallel while gripping the notch of the firing pin head. We got it cleaned out and I shot two antelope.

A friend just bought a Charles Parker #206 bench vise pat. date of Nov. 22, 1910.

He hasn't been able to get the swivel lock to extend down tight enough to catch one of the position holes in the swivel base.

The base and ring are both cast stamped with the number 288 1/2

If someone who has a Parker #206 can look at the pics he sent to me and let me know what the issue is, would appreciate it.

Thanks.

You should be able to remove that entire base since you have removed the center bolt and the lock down. Look on the opposite side of the base from where you removed the lockdown bolt. That is a pin attached to the brake inside the swivel base. This allows you so switch which side of the vise you install the lockdown. Throw some lube on it and lightly tap the base down and off.

I'll probably clean it up a little but this one won't be getting a shiny paint job any time soon! That's just not my usual modus operandi, if you will.

It's funny, but I had to double check the date because the photo looked a lot like 1990 to me, too! You're correct, though; it's 1930.

The inside should look like this. The lock down pulls up on a wedge that spreads the shoes to tighten.

My EMF 125 has a swivel base on it. It only weighs about 85 lbs. There is 0 backlash in it.

So there's only two sizes of this style? 3.5 and 5? That's cool because I've got one of each (sadly, one US and one Japan, respectively). Japanese tools weren't all that great back then, huh?

Does anyone happen to know the thread size for the swivel lock handle of the 5" Japanese vises?

Not many options in my neck of the woods, so this is what I have in my shop:

Wilton 3" and 4" restored

Record #1 & #3
_DSC2484_zpsty1bluhv.jpg

_DSC2483_zpsna7ngvdg.jpg

For really heavy duty pressing I have this... so my vises have an easy life:
_DSC2474_zpsarisw9dc.jpg

_DSC2485_zpsp55mlfh8.jpg

This is what I use to lube them, and other equipment too: grease for the screw, oil for the slides:
_DSC2490_zps8bez12iq.jpg

And, the eBath... the ubiquitous baterry charger (been lazy and did not build a dedicated power source yet) and the current controller, selectable from 100mA to 2A; quality rust conversion does not need tens of amps, just more time; I've just derusted the jaw inserts of a Parker vise I am working on.

Been a busy few weeks with my day job but was able to get a few vises finished in my spare time. The # 4 Wilton came out pretty good getting a bit better with my painting skills.

This one looks British to me, I've seen a big Record with that slanted edge. Not necessarily a Record, but definitely British in my opinion.

Bought a decent sized one off eBay Prentiss no 22 and got the seller to ship it no where near a you **** price but I'm hoping it's in good shape. I'm a sucker for the Prentiss swivel jaw vises I must say. The seller assured me there are no cracks or repairs so here is to hoping I guess haha.

It's a German Peddinghaus Record vise. I don't know if it has anything to do with the British company or not.

Rusty65:

Your Prentiss 22 looks to be in great shape.

I have one as well, but with more wear.

On mine, I haven't yet been able to extract my pin to allow the rear dynamic jaw to move, but in closeup of your pin in this pic above, it looks to be the same pin style with collar around the base of pin.

Coincidentally I just finished this #20 Prentiss swivel jaw for a customer. This is the one that took me 3 months to get the pin out.

Customer picked the color which I like on this vise

I can't see the German script on the other side but I'm no expert in vises and your opinion is better than mine.
Here's the Record vise for reference, the 2nd from right; there are no gibs to adjust the play but the upper edges on the slide are slanted.
