They will gather in the shed because it gets warm during the day. The ONLY way to keep them out is to seal up every crack or crevice they can use to gain access to the building. That can be quite a job. Once you get that done spray all of the corners and nooks with Home Defense Max. That will kill them on contact and will also deter lady bugs and elm beetles.

Don't know how to keep them out, but this makes getting rid of them fun.

1) seal the building air tight and don't go in or out
2) deal with it

Leave the blinds up on a window on the sunny side, lights off. They will gather there then a quick pass with Yard Guard and a hand vacuum should finish up most of the day's accumulation.

Find the animal carcass, decayed plant matter, or food product that the larvae were growing in and toss it. Cleanliness will get rid of them.

You won't get a bunch of flies like that unless they hatched in the space. Maybe under the floor?

If you live in the country they are around, no way to get rid of their food source/breeding medium. This time of year they find a warm place to die??? The ones in my attic/sheds are all old ones half or already dead not new hatchlings. Just a fact of living in a rural area. As mentioned previously, seal as best as possible and check door weather stripping. Can spray talstar pro to help.

As least the Asian ladybugs are non existent this year for some reason, I won't complain about that!

No 'flypaper' available in WI? One would think with a few cows around the place someone would sell flypaper.

Window strips to stick inside the windows. They work really well, much better than the hanging fly strips. The flies go to the light of the windows and become trapped when they join their friends.

I saw somewhere a "garage door screen" much like the concept of a screen door on your front entryway of your house. Then you can keep shop/garage doors open for ventilation but keep leaves/bugs out. Great idea for detailers as well.

At this time of year they are probably "cluster flies" (or they would be in my part of the world.) They find any place they can hibernate for the winter, then come out again in the spring. AFAIK they are not associated with dead organic matter unlike normal house flies.

The bug-a-salt gun is the greatest invention.....at some point, you start welcoming flies just for the chance to blow them away with salt. My next attempt is to learn *********** the flies on the wing.....with salt. Should be a challenge since the salt gun range is pretty low. Wing shooting flies? A new Olympic sport.

So kill all the dogs for a 1000' around and pave the earth in all directions. We get horse flies and their isn't any horse stalls for a mile. They come from everywhere. you can treat the yard to cut down some or put out some really stinky bait.

Home defense max. Spray any and all possible entrance points. Spray eves, around Windows, doors and any other cracks and crevices. It will kill new flies that are trying to enter and blocks their scent trail that marks the super highway for new flies to follow the path in. Clean up current flies with a vacuum and soak the shed entry points with home defense max or similar product unless you are opposed to using pesticides. This method does work.

Na - that would make a City... My comment was implying that the fly haven is inside the shed or under the floor. I wouldn't think that flies would be attracted inside the shed unless there was something good in there for them.

The winter is the worst in my shop. The come out when I turn on the heat, they seem to hide in the cracks and crevices. I have a pole barn so impossible to fully seal it up. I just get the vacuum out and **** up the ones I can get.

Fun? Yes. But also a pain in the **** to clean up all the salt...

Agreed, I probably come off as a kill joy but I am particular about where guests shoot the flies myself. It's a glorified messy fly swatter. For problems like the OP you need chemicals and to seal up your structure as best possible.

In our area Tempo SC comes highly recommended.
