I noticed this set is currently a "hot buy" at $54.96. Does anyone remember what it has dipped down at it's lowest? I went back through this thread a little to look for it, but there are numbers galore with everyone trying to get it as cheap as possible. Anyways, I'd like to pick one of these up and was just wondering what price I should look out for.

I think I paid $35.....without any points or discounts. Sears will mark it a hot buy if they take off a penny.

Add it to your cart and see if it goes down over the next 30 days....:bounce:

Few months back, it was in the $30s range, don't recall exactly what, but less than $40. Good kit, I've used mine several times in the past few months.

Is there an advantage to having it in my cart as opposed to just checking the Sear's product page?
I've tried saving items in my cart when I knew a new sale was about to begin.

If the price went DOWN, then I had to refresh the browser several times before the price updated in my cart. It was often faster to just remove the item from the cart, and add it again with the new lower price.

If the price went UP, then I only had to refresh once and the price in my cart updated instantly.

Was that a local store deal? Personally, the 50% off is the lowest I've seen on the main site. I grabbed one when the Hot Buy tag was missing, so I could use a $10 off coupon.

I got mine when the price was $39.96 back in November last year. My final price was less with points and coupons.

So this is just a tap and die set...without the ability to cut threads? Seems kinda useless.

rice rocket,

I have both tap & die sets and thread restorer sets.

For every time I use the T&D set, I use the thread restorer set 10 times.

T&D sets are only useful when you are cutting new threads. Thread restorers are useful almost every time you take something apart and need to put it back together. Threads get messed up a lot more than you seem to think. A lot of times threads are messed up by the guy(s) before you. And, if you're like me, you gotta make it right!

I actually picked up a set.

Still haven't used it though, the sizes I've needed aren't in the set, go figure. :)

I know that snap on and others rebrand this kit, would you look for a used snap on kit (for warranty purposes) or just buy the new one from sears?

I researched this dilemma with the spindle rethreader kit. A nice used/pre-owned Snappy on eBay is like $10 more than the Cman BNIB.

So, the $10 is worth it to me for the warranty. (My driver warranties them if needed)

That being said, I have the 40? and 48? pc set of rethreaders I bought new from Cman/Sears and have used the bejeezus out of them and they have held up fine. But I am slow and methodical and in no hurry in my own little shop. Maybe dudes racing the clock can/will booger them up as haste makes waste.

That was my thought. I have a bunch of misc snap on ones, but I really would like a nice case for them. I guess I will have to see, my new tool box has a drawer waiting for this type of stuff.

Anybody know how these are designed and why the tap does not thread into the die? Do regular tap/dies thread into each other?

So, I just grabbed a used Snap On RD20 Master Spindle Rethread kit from ebay for $41 + $15 s/h. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Snap-On-Too...FsM2jlUqSvihaSyjqsuPI%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

The Kastar 2599 can be had for $52 + s/h on the web. Once again, a few bucks more and I get to deal with SO if/when the need arises.

I finally got to use this 48 piece set for real today as I was rebuilding a Merry Tiller Rototiller and one of the threads on the pulley that engages the belt had been way over tightened and had damaged the threads.

I used both the tap and die, the die cleaned up the damaged thread on the pulley assembly and it was pretty bad, the tap quickly cleaned up the threads on the jam nuts.

Really impressed with how easy it was and much better than using a regular die as it would not have cleaned up the threads, rather I suspect it would have just cut new threads and removed more material.

Not sure how these work so well but I'm impressed.

Great recommendation from the original poster and others who commented.

Thank you.

Description Item # 00942275000P Model # 971 2750

It got taken down during the last deal they had where it was $40. They might have been getting rid of the remaining stock.

I've had mine a few years, great kit. Has saved my **** numerous times

I have used mine far more than expected, works great until it doesnt, lol.

I question the "hardened steel" description. I had removed some lug bolts on a W124 and noted they had some rust so I put a drop of oil on the tap and ran it into a couple of the lug holes. Half way through the third hole with a bit of pressure and it twisted cleanly off the shaft. Having turned wrenches for some 3 decades now, I try to use common sense and not apply high torque to a tap etc. I would guessimate about 10-15ft lbs as it was lubricated and the lug bolts could screw in without a large effort. I was shocked it snapped and it is also a very clean break so I am thinking possibly a defect in the metal. Sadly they do not cover the taps or dies with any warranty.

I've read, probably in this thread too, that some mechanics are lucky enough to get their sets warrantied by the Snap-On man. That is because the OEM is identical. I believe the Craftman set even comes with SO date code stamps.

That's why when they were 29.99 and you bought 3 and applied the $15 off $75 and got $10 in SYWR points I bought 3 sets.

Sears warrantied a broken piece for me. They took the part out of a 40pc set they had on the shelf and then a few weeks later that set was in the clearance section. I was waiting for the price to drop more but someone else snagged it.

I took the honest approach and bought a Snap On to replace my broken Cman 9/16 restore tap, it was like 3 bucks shipped free. Neither has any marking other than size, so I can see people scamming a dealer.

Thanks and I had 10 bucks off also in surprise points too!

I got a set, Other people have used it more than I have. But when I do need it, I will have it....

I can't say enough about these, they're awesome. I restore a lot of old machinery and use these almost daily.
Even for the ones who may only use them on occasion, when you really need them they easily pay for themselves. Especially when you get them $39 via ShopYourWay.

Highly recommended

Anyone know the COO on the 40pc set? I've got $16 in points and tired of waiting for the 48 piece set to come back down in price.

COO is USA on both the 40 and 48 pc. Don't skimp out and get the 40 pc. set, you will end up needing the missing fin pitch metric such as m10x1.25. Take a look at the identical Lang/Kastar 48 pc. (COO USA, they OEM the craftsman set) on tooldiscounter.com

http://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemD...l71wEOlGyb2svSk_5fxQWYwPnOPnY6DvZWRoCIevw_wcB

Comes out to under $60 shipped
