I broke out the Wilton magnet again today....managed to snag a couple of 500S. One of the 500s was mounted on the welding table, and the small stuff was either hanging on it, or sitting on top, so that all got dragged along with it.

Its not the usual Record arrangement, you are right, that collar has to come off. If you wire or clamp the vice shut and unwind the screw it should push it off.

I had success extending it all the way out ans forcing that ring off. its a cool looking vise. heres some pics of it apart. im trping this with really grimey fingers haha

Nice score! Still searching for my first old Wilton, hard to come by up here in Canada.

More nice Wiltons there G-Man. The blue lift sitting on top are nice lifts. I use them to move large molds and anything it will thread into. Even a Bridgeport.

Thanks...expect a jaw order for one of them soon :D

This was from a huge, huge, huge, auction and they had so much stuff they were literally selling piles of things to get through it all in one day. The one vise was by itself, but all of the rest of the stuff was piled on the table next to the mounted vise. I actually wanted the table as well, so it worked out nicely. I've got casters for it, and it's going to be my small TIG table.

Here it is after an E-tank bath and ran across the wire wheel, looks like new. But, not a manufacturers mark or even any kind of a part # to be found. Any ideas?

454ragtop: I was looking through my stuff trying to identify Shiftless' new micro vise when I ran across this in a 1904 Millers Falls catalog. There are enough differences to probably rule it out and enough similarities to keep you wondering.

Shiftless: I still haven't found a 1 inch vise like yours in all of my stuff but I'll keep looking. I did find this picture of my 1 inch jaw vise. Actually it measures about 15/16 so mine is smaller.
That didn't come out right.

Thanks CRS, does have some similarities, and with drawings not pics, who knows.

Shiftless vise is a Colton patent, you guys miss my earlier post?

Here's the unknown/possible Erie Tool Works vise (thanks JKB and GETRIDAONE) all gussied up in a new coat of paint. Last thing I think I'll do is coat the bare metal in BLO, too much humidity around here.

454:
Thanks for the reference, but I don't see any "18" on the surface underneath the fixed jaw.
But it certainly does look just like the Colton patent vises I saw on Google images. (like this one)

Cast into the fixed jaw tower. Compare with the google image of the Colton vise I posted above.

Might this indicate that my latest find pre-dates 1885?

Thanks again 454

Shiftless: I found these Colton patent drawings and this one photo of a Colton that doesn't have a horn on the back of the anvil; most of them did. Coltons were manufactured by Moore and Barnes Manufacturing of Phoenix, NY

Legally, the manufacturer could not claim "Patent Applied For" unless he/she submitted the patent. According to USPTO, Colton's patent, #320224, was submitted 30 Oct 1884.

Another half round slide with raised key way on top has appeared on EvilPrey, check out item #112221778145. It is an Adams.

That's a good idea, hadn't thought of that.

I'm just outside of Windsor, right across the river from Detroit.

PghJKB:
Thanks for the patent research work. I really appreciate it. Your findings combined with other images and input from 454 and CRS support the idea that my micro vise is 132 years old.

You are welcome.

On another subject:
Anyone here involved with the disappearance of the seven or so listings in the Pittsburgh Craigslist for somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 to 10 6 inch and larger vises coming out of Tionesta PA.?f

It was a veritable potpourri which included, but not limited to, an 8 inch Reed, an 8 inch Yost, an 8 inch Hollands, a pair of 8(?) inch Green Columbians, and a 7 inch Yost (and more).

They were several thousands in retail list here. Is Santa coming early?

Do we have a bundler in our midst's?

Wish I could have been a fly on the wall for the conversation between the buyer and seller on this one. Ebay ad said '6" Wilton C3'. Picture says nay, nay. Ad says it sold for $600.... SOMEBODY IS DISSAPOINTED

I was the 2nd caller on this glorious ******* today. Yes, an 8" Reed 108. It is sold, but not to me. I even offered a ridiculous amount of $$ to try and have the guy unethically undercut the buyer, how unfortunate that I meet the one guy on cl who is ethical. Buy the way...it went for $100 and the price included that stand and a 5" Parker. I feel like killing myself I really do...:eyecrazy::willy_nil

Jaws look retrofitted, I could be wrong but it appears they were done right. The stand is the BOMB:shocking:

Finished up the repaint on my G ******* kit vise. The color is satin poppy red. The only thing I know about the history is from the patent which was issued in 1945.

Vice guys, what is a Morgan Milwaukee #80 worth? Is this expected or did two idiots duke it out with their keyboards?

http://www.postabid.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?postabid14/106/4

It may seem crazy, but try to buy an "advertised" 8" and you'd be really lucky to do it under $700... I've paid $100 for a Morgan 180 and I recently paid "slightly" more for a Prentiss 58... I guess it's up to the dude with the cash as to what they are worth, but they certainly aren't falling out of trees, unless of course you are JOE "blanking" Striper!

HAHA!
Take care!

No Joe you didn't. BUT you do seem to find more than your share, or at least more than the rest of us, of really cool vises.
It's OK. We still love you. Even if.......
Well I'll just leave it at that.

I know exactly where they went. I might wind up with a couple of them. I have never seen the Merrell brothers vise or the big columbians. I have had several of the newer cheaper 150# columbians but have never found an early one like these when they were still a real vise.
