From time to time we’ll see some commentary or inquiry about metal cabinet systems for garages. It’s time for me to put my oar in the water on this subject.

Like so many other things in life we have lots of choices to reach a desired outcome. When it comes to garage cabinets and benches it runs the gamut from a few simple pieces of lumber tacked together, to elaborate and, as a result, expensive solutions from professional suppliers. In between those two extremes are a ton of alternatives.

In my last garage I was able to re-purpose some kitchen cabinets that came out of the house when we did a complete kitchen remodel before moving in. I even made the bench tops out of scrap pieces of hardwood flooring left over from the floor I installed there. All in all, a recyclers delight, as well as being very cost effective. While not ideal (not sure such a thing exists anyway) they made for some very useful storage and work space.

We recently made a major move to Central Texas and purchased a house that had a completely bare to the walls garage. Except for a bicycle lift assembly there wasn’t a thing attached, not even any holes where something had been removed. The previous owner obviously lacked the garage rat gene. I had seen several different brands and configurations of garage cabinets over the years and thought they’d be a good choice for this garage. In a vacation home we had a few years ago I’d gotten some composition board/melamine cabinets and hadn’t been happy with those, so I zeroed in on metal cabinets. After seven decades of kicking around this globe I’ve probably tried/owned/evaluated just about all the alternatives, and decided to spoil myself to some degree on this project and buy new.

After doing some research here and around the www I became attracted to the NewAge line of products. Often the matter of choice is reduced to price, but in the real world it seems to work better if we have a number of elements to the value equation. Price is certainly an important criterion, but not the only one. For my situation I wanted the best service product at the best price for features offered. The combination of delivery time, size, features, expected durability, and how much of that stuff for what price drove my choice.

I ended up selecting the Pro Series 3.0 cabinets. I chose the 14 piece package that included 4 lockers, 4 overhead cabinets, 2 “tool box” lower cabinets, and 2 two door lower cabinets with roll out shelf. Details to follow. I also ordered 5 overhead cabinets in the Pro 2.0 stainless steel series primarily because they had a heck of a good discount on them at the time (clearance pricing?) and I needed additional upper cabinets. Again, more detail on this choice to follow as well.

During the research phase I was struck by the number of people who didn’t, by my standards, spend enough effort on the evaluation process. Their commentary appeared to focus almost entirely on “….I got this, for so much money…..” without consideration or at least commentary on the details of what the product offered quality wise. Case in point would be one guy saying he bought such and so model for X price, and someone would reply that they bought “….the same thing….” For some much lower price. After a little back and forth it was determined that the lower price package was a lower grade model or equivalent. The basic message is that not all products that might appear to be equivalent are.

There were two primary reasons I chose the Pro 3.0 package. NewAge offers a number of different models within approximately three different levels of features. There are variations in color and finish, as well as smooth steel and diamond plate (at least for the door and drawer fronts). The major difference to me was in the thickness of metal used, and overall size of the cabinets. The lower priced lines, Bold and Premium, use a 24 gauge metal and have shorter height locker cabinets. The Premium Plus and Diamond Plus are a 20 gauge metal, which equates to a “mid-grade” in their offerings. And then the Pro series which is their highest priced offering and comes in 18 gauge metal. Now metal measured in gauge dimensions may confuse some folks as to significance of the measurement. The best way to put that into perspective is to point out that 18 gauge is TWICE as thick as 24 gauge, with 20 being roughly halfway between. Stated another way, between the difference in thickness, and the larger cabinet size (thus more material as well), it’s pretty easy to understand the price differential between the two/three models. Another difference with the Pro series is the upper cabinet doors open side to side, as opposed to the lower models that have a door that opens upward on pneumatic struts. My personal choice is the more conventional side to side, though there’s nothing wrong with the lift up style if it suits your tastes. I wanted the 18 gauge for strength and durability. I’ve owned some shelves in the past of 24 gauge and they were really unsatisfactory except for the lightest of storage needs.

NewAge and many of their retailers (Sears, Home Depot, approved specialty suppliers, and so on) will have various of their products on sale nearly all the time. The kicker is, they rotate what they offer on sale approximately each month or two. The good news is, if you can be patient, the choices you prefer most likely will be on sale if you’re willing to wait. The bad news is if you want specific products and want to get your project completed on your schedule, you may not be in sync with their sale schedule. I was mostly fortunate with my choices and their more favorable pricing schedule. I knew I wanted the Pro 3.0 for it’s features, and I knew I needed quite a few pieces to get the kind of storage/work configuration that fit my tastes. I checked most of the retailers as well as the company site with some regularity once I knew what our home purchase would require. Given the machinations of the home buying process and the time involved in a fairly long distance move I had some time to work with, though in the bigger scheme of things not really all that much. Fortunately they had a 14 piece set (as described earlier) that fit my configuration/needs to a T, and if I could live with the Platinum/White color combination it was a bargain. The Pro only comes in three color combos, red or dark grey doors on a black shell being the other two choices. Quite frankly I would have preferred the blue, but that wasn’t an option in any case. As it turns out, the Platinum and White fits my garage color scheme nicely so was a good choice. The bonus was that in this color it was $1000 less than the red or black with the same configuration. I have no idea why it was that much less (and no, that’s not a typo), perhaps they were overstocked in that color and just wanted to incent movement. Whatever the reason, it was a great deal in my eyes. BTW, I looked a couple days ago and they no longer offer that deal…….must have sold out of inventory.

The Pro 3.0 comes with soft close, Euro style hinges on the doors, and soft close drawer slides. I mentioned earlier I also bought 5 of the Pro 2.0 stainless overhead cabinets. In reality only the doors are stainless, the shells are black powder coated steel. The doors have piano hinges rather than the soft close, but otherwise function the same as the 3.0. However they have a feature that I think is better than the 3.0…………….they’re 28” tall rather than 22”……………..that extra 6” is good space to have. The plus, at the time, was that the 2.0 were $100 off on each cabinet. Currently that deal is no longer offered either.

(continued due to size limits)

Overall the quality on these is VERY nice, not perfect, but very nice. The cabinet shells are square within a pretty tight tolerance, the doors swing well, the drawers roll nice. Many of the reports I’d read talked about damage, mostly in shipment, but that NewAge was very good about replacement. The kicker of course is the time delay waiting for replacements. That did have me somewhat concerned, but I ordered my delivery for sooner than I planned to install, so figured I’d built in some stall time. As it turns out I had no shipping damage. There were a couple of nicks in the cardboard packaging, but none ended up with damage to the contents. There were a couple very small dents on a couple of the cabinets, but my guess is those were done at the factory as the boxes showed no sign of damage in those areas. The only dents, two of them, that ended up visible are in the edge of each of the two stainless bench tops. Again, the boxes showed no sign, but the stainless had small dents. This is one of the few areas of negativity I have about this product. If I were to order any more of these with bench tops I’d probably go for the pressed bamboo. The stainless is very thin, folded around a composite core. It will dent very easily as time goes bye. Expecting this, I didn’t bother to contact NewAge for replacements as normal usage will likely result in as bad or worse wear and tear damage.

These puppies are stout!! I’m very glad I opted for the 18 ga. I can’t imagine I’d have been happy with the thinner material. In day to day use over the past couple months they’ve performed very well, doors and drawers open and close with ease. The shelves adjust to enough locations that it’s easy to configure for max storage alignment, and they will take the weight of a good size load, especially the lockers since they are very good size. The bottom of the upper and lower cabinets is set down into the cabinet shell which is a function of the design of the shell. I’m sure it makes for a price friendlier manufacturing cost, but does require lifting items on that level to get them out the door. The drawers are a true full extension which is very handy, and if you have experience, not all drawers that claim to be full extension actually are.

Delivery went very well, the driver was on time and courteous. He willingly drug them up my somewhat long driveway to the area in front of the garage doors. He would have put them in the garage, but he was here the same day as the moving van and the garage was a staging area for household items at that moment. The moving guys helped me move the three pallet loads into the garage later that day. From there I did the rest of the movement and installation all by myself. It would have been easier to have a helper who you could work with, especially for hanging the uppers, but I’ve done that sort of thing enough times by myself that I’ve devised methods to get it done single handedly. At my age it’s not as easy as it used to be, but still doable. I’d read some complaining about mounting holes from individual cabinet to cabinet not lining up, but I had no such issue with the exception of one of the 2.0 cabinets having slightly misaligned holes. It had a couple other very small finish/design features different from the other 4 similar cabinets, so my guess is it was built in a different facility. It appears to not be an issue with the current 3.0 product. I didn’t keep close track of my time, but I’d say I have approximately 24 hours of labor involved in the unpackaging, minor assembly, and installation. I’m kind of fussy about this sort of thing, and a fair bit of that time was spent in aligning and shimming for uneven walls. One of the potential problems with a longish assemblage like this is dealing with “waves” in the walls. Again, if I’d had a skilled assistant it may have gone a bit more quickly.

All in all I’d say I got good value, and based on use so far, I should get good service from these. They look very nice in place and even with the 22” tall (short?) overheads being a bit smallish they do swallow a lot of stuff.

The pictures show all 20 pieces I received on three pallets. The rest of the shots give you an idea of how they load the smaller pieces in the lockers in order to make the shipping size more compact, and give you an idea of the huge pile of packing material you will end up with when the job is done. The other shots give you an idea of partial and then completed install. I would happily recommend these products to an informed buyer.

I recently bought NewAge Pro 3.0 cabinets from John at ShopStorageCabinets.com (a forum sponsor.) Very happy with the purchase.

The order consisted of 3 sets (2 of one set and 1 of another) that were on sale. A total of 6 lockers, 9 wall, 1 combo base, 5 tool base, and 3 bamboo (84") tops cost around $6200 +/-.

Soooo... How much?

Since the same deals are no longer available that's somewhat irrelevant, but for the twenty pieces (I also ordered an extra bench top) with tax it came to approx. $4500. Some would say "order out of state and there won't be sales tax...", well there's more to it than that. NewAge has a distribution center in Dallas, so Texans are going to pay tax regardless unless someone at the order desk brain farts.

Thanks to a link from another member here I did see where Costco has the 14 piece Pro 3.0 in any of the three colors for $4k delivered ("while supplies last", for what that's worth). Since they're in most states I suspect tax would be added there too. But they (Costco) are offering an even better deal for the right person. They have an 8 piece combo with caster option added that would net out essentially the same pieces as the 14 piece plus two extra overheads (if you order two sets) for $3400 delivered, before tax (if they give the $500 rebate on more than one set). Like I said, there are sale pricing deals all the time, it's just a matter of what fits a guys needs and when.

If anyone is in the market for an 8' workbench with either a stainless steel or bamboo top, Home Depot has the New Age 8 footer on sale for an unheard of $202.05, free shipping to store. You can't buy an SS top alone for that. Deal is good through 11/30/16 although, for whatever reason, one time I pulled it up it showed the date as 10/10/16. Their 6' and 4' foot tables are on sale as well but for more money.

Here's a screen shot of what you should see if you're so inclined. And thank you Uncle Bob for an excellent write-up! If I were to do it all over again I'd have the garage outfitted with New Age products.

Thanks for the link to the bench, just checked, the wood top is out of stock, but SS is apparently still available. These have that small power strip included as well as a "junk bin", which might be more trouble than it's worth as a dirt/stuff collector.........but still decent value.

Great review. Update it as time goes by.

I opted for the "blue ones". They were the mid grade Performance Plus. I have also been pleased. They didn't have these new 3.0s at the time.

Watch the sales for a while and they can get as good as 35% off. (Black friday)

What a small world. I am just north of Copperas Cove. I was looking for other people's experiences with the Newage cabinets before I bought a set for my new shop. Unfortunately my stove/oven decided it was done working and since we are hosting some of my soldiers for Thanksgiving we HAD to go buy a new one today which has postponed the cabinets for a while.

For those interested in this, Costco currently has the 14 piece Pro 3 on sale for $3500 after rebate, in all three colors. Not much time left if they keep to the end date they've published.

NewAge directly showed no interest to do that within the package pricing format, probably a business decision based on the cost of labor to undo and redo a palleted package already in the warehouse, and the extra labor to keep track of reshuffled inventory.

Dealers like dittle might have some flexibility, but he'd have to address that for an accurate answer.

Another thought on looking for ways to save on cost. I'm doing a new patio and wanted to assemble an outdoor kitchen. Fortunately the pieces Newage offers fit the style of what we're doing, though their package configuration didn't quite fit my ideas.

I cruised the net a bit and came across an offer from Overstock.com with a coupon for "first time buyers". These kind of things will often have restrictions on manufacturers products that qualify (probably based on skinny margins) but loading the desired merchandise in the shopping cart feature provides the answer. So I picked the set that most closely accomplished my need, loaded it in the cart, and....tadah!....15% off, a pretty good lick. I then added the additional cabinet from the one piece at a time menu and........bummer...........no discount. I suspect that's how they limit how much they "give away". I may have been able to phone or online chat and nag them into doing that piece at the discount as well, but didn't feel like doing that grind. I removed that item and figured I might be able to find it elsewhere on sale. When the order was confirmed by email there was a link to another discount code for 10% off......probably they've learned that if it took a discount to get you to be a customer in the first place that it takes further discounting incentives to get you to return. So the next morning I applied the discount code, selected the single cabinet I'd tried the night before and .......tadah!......discount applied, order processed. Some folks may not think those discounts are all that great, but they're better than nothing, and they were available now in the real world.

I bought 3 medium sized sets of NewAge cabinets. Each set consisted of 2 pallets and the tops wrapped and strapped to a larger pallet. It appears that these smaller pallets are sub sets that they can mix and match to make up the sets and are packaged in the country of manufacture. To break apart these smaller pallets to mix and match components would be a serious amount of labor, subject to damage, and a logistical nightmare.

You can get an idea of what joel is talking about by looking at the pics on the first page, you'll see how some of the smaller cabs are packaged inside the larger, and how the two pallets are arranged. On the front side of the center pallet package are the bench tops. Looks like those get stretch wrapped on the pallet depending on whether the buyer specs stainless or wood tops. The third pallet is mostly the extra overheads I ordered which were boxed individually.

Go to ShopStorageCabinets.com

Pick the style you want right under the video and then pick what you want. The discounts are the same that NewAge gives me as a distributor. Submit the form and I'll send back a link to purchase the set of cabinets you want.

You get 15% off orders over 1000 and 20% off orders over $3000. That's off the retail price of individual cabinets. If you want you can start with a set and add extra cabinets. The price of the set is then added to get the discounts on the individual cabinets.

Awesome, do they give you an option with the stainless tops? A couple of the sets they sell i like with the stainless tops just want to switch some of the type of cabinets.

I bought the,10 piece set that Costco had for 1999. Very good deal for what you get. Large locker doors seam a bit out of alignment but the hinges are adjustable.

NewAge offers stainless steel over a wood substrate and laminated bamboo. You can get any set with either worktop.

Right now they are clearing out some sets that only are available with stainless steel tops. :pimpflash

Are these drilled for wall mounting without legs? I've been leaning toward the Saber cabinets since legs make it hard to clean or store stuff underneath.

These have multiple holes in the back panels for lag bolt installation (good idea if on the legs too for security). They also come with L brackets to hang from, similar to a French cleat type of install.

I wouldn't trust them for hanging off a wall. The back is just sheet metal. Granted mine are the lower gauge Performance Plus.

I'll leave it to NewAge to assume the liability of justifying the "safety" of wall hanging their product, but will point out a few things that might prompt questions between a potential buyer and them. First, go back to the original write up in this thread and note that the 18 ga. is twice as thick as 24, with 20 being approx. half way in between. In the area where their cleat would interface with the cabinet shell there is a formed channel which adds strength, as well as the top and back panels being welded together for double thickness. Look closely at the pictures in the first entry of this thread and you'll see the back of the locker unit. If anyone has been involved with properly hung wall cabinets that are fastened in sheer, they seem to hold considerable weight for such a comparatively few fasteners. That all being said, the 2' x 3' cabinets weigh quite a bit empty, and because of their strength of materials can potentially hold a lot of stored weight. For those who want to wall mount it would pay to ask the manufacturer for any data they may be willing to provide.

Check this review;

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=352143&highlight=wall+mounted+newage+cabinets

Well the New Age cabinets have been in for about a month and a half and I love them. I went with the Bold Series and you'll see the arrangement I opted for in the photos below. I've also added some Wall Control metal pegboard for storing some car cleaning tools. I'd like to get a few shelves put up to display and organize a bit more on that wall, but for now the space is taken up with some of my old car show awards and display boards. I also changed up the light switch near the door to include a plug for my GUV. I like this much better than the cable stapled to the wall and leading to the other socket as it was in the past. I'm also testing out some RaceDeck FreelFlow tiles below my wall of cabinets to see how I feel. i bought enough to try and gauge how they'll space length and width wise across the floor.

Uncle Bob -

Currently outfitting a new garage and really appreciate this review. Thanks again.

Just noticed you’re from Salado. My business partner lives in Salado as well. Small world and even smaller town. Nice place and I really enjoy visiting. Always stay at the Inn on the Creek.

I'm looking into cabinets for my new garage. Missed a good deal at Menards last week, but I'm sure it will come around again...

It has really come down to newage pro vs saber for me.....
Originally I really liked the clean look of the saber cabinets, but after comparing them to the newage pro's, I don't see them being as good of a value. I see some reviews from obsessed garage and see he sells them on his site now. He goes on to to make a comment that they are better than the newage cabinets....

Now I'm polish, so sometimes it takes a little bit to figure things out...... But other than saber having a little bit bigger dimensions how are they 'better'?

Saber is 19 vs newage 18 gauge

Newage has soft close version of same euro hinges. Large drawers have two sets of slides from both companies.

Newage ships free on top of finding them for 15-25% off during sales... This could equate to 40% savings

Newage has double wall doors

All newage products come preassembled/welded

Newage includes legs in sale price

Newage base cabinet has pull out shelf

I will say the sabers do look cleaner and I like them having two different options for bases with drawers, but other than that, am I missing something?

NewAge cabinets are always on sale. They rotate sets on a monthly basis. Once your layout is set let me quote you a price. That way you'll get any set and any additional pieces at a sale price.

Click on the signature below to get to my website. Then pick what you want and add it to a quote.

Thanks

Just installed my set from John. Very happy with the product. Cabinets hang straight and look very good.

I wouldn’t mind having better liners but that is a minor concern. I am very happy I bought an 8 piece set and added a few others.

Uncle Bob, and others... There has been a few years since you posted this review. How are the cabinets holding up? Still happy with the purchase?

Yep, still happy with the purchase. These have held up very well. The drawers still slide easily and close well. The door hinges work smoothly. These even had to endure a move from the attached garage pictured to a new, detached garage I finished in late '17. The disassembly for moving went relatively smoothly, and the transfer and reinstall was pretty much the same procedure noted here (practice makes perfect they say :) ). No ill effects from that process either. Apparently the marketplace appreciated the comparative heavy duty nature of the 18g product enough that NewAge brought out a second line in that material and with similar pricing for those who wanted a different look. As noted in this article I expected the thin, stainless bench tops to gain dents in use over time...……...they haven't "disappointed" on that prediction either :(. Like I said before, if I had it to do over I'd go with the wood instead...……...the only short coming of the product.
